Culver City, Calif. (October 15, 2007) – Academy Award® winner Jon Voight (Best Actor in a Leading Role, Coming Home), Golden Globe® winner Terence Stamp (Most Promising Male Newcomer, Billy Bud) and Trent Ford (Gosford Park, “The West Wing”, “The Class”) revisit the Utah Territory to uncover a great tragedy in the American West, when Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases September Dawn on DVD January 2, 2008. Written and directed by Christopher Cain (Young Guns, The Principle) and inspired by the controversial real-life tragedy of The Mountain Meadows Massacre, September Dawn depicts the tragedy that took place on September 11, 1857, in the Utah Territory. When a California-bound group of Arkansas emigrants arrives, Mormon Bishop and General Jacob Samuelson (Voight) allows the settlers to rest in the nearby Mountain Meadows for two weeks, but secretly instructs his sons Jonathan to keep a close watch. Then under the guidance of Brigham Young (Stamp), the Bishop convinces his Mormon community to savagely murder the Arkansas settlers. Amidst this, two young lovers-to-be, Jonathan (Ford), the son of General and Mormon bishop Samuelson and Emily (Tamara Hope, Saint Ralph), the daughter of one of the doomed settlers from Arkansas, develop a relationship despite the atmosphere of suspicion and rancor.

The DVD contains exclusive bonus features including two featurettes “True Events: A Historical Perspective” and “Descendants: Remembering the Tragedy”. This historical drama is available on DVD January 2 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment for an SRP of $26.96.

Synopsis September Dawn
Academy Award® winner Jon Voight, Terence Stamp and Trent Ford star in this film based on the true story of the Mountain Meadows Massacre – the brutal murder of 120 men, women and children on September 11, 1857 as their wagon train passed through Utah on its way to California. The question of whether the attack was carried out by local Paiute Indians or by a renegade sect of the Mormon Church remains unresolved to this day.

Set against the beauty of the Utah Mountains, September Dawn explores what might have happened when the ill-fated settlers stopped near Cedar City to rest before completing the last leg of their journey. Local Mormon Bishop Jacob Samuelson (Voight) is suspicious of the group, so he dispatches his oldest son Jonathan (Ford) to spy on them. Jonathan soon falls in love with an angelic member of the wagon train, the minister’s daughter Emily (Tamara Hope), and is horrified when he discovers that his father thinks the settlers are enemies of the church and is planning on attacking them. While Jonathan makes plans to escape with Emily, his father sets in motion a chain of events, fueled by revenge and fanaticism, which culminates in a violent and tragic ambush.

September Dawn has a run time of approximately 111 minutes and is rated R for violence. Artwork is available at www.SPHEPublicity.com. Visit Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on the Web at www.SonyPictures.com.
