2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove - Page 8

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

Evil things reside there.

Besides, it seems telling that I've read about very little outcry to save it since the idea for a new one was floated - most of the objections have been about the parkland the new one replaces. I gather that most of the Stadium's soul was sucked out when it was basically rebuilt in the 1970s and the infrastructure underneath is just terrible.

I gotta admit...I, too, have been stunned by the silence of tearing down the original Yankee Stadium. It's just amazing to me.

The House that Ruth built. Gone. You'd think there would be a lot of passion involved...even if it was tempered with practicality. But I'm not hearing it from hardly anyone.

IIRC when the new stadium plan was unveiled, they said that the old park would remain in some form for use by the neighborhood for little league and stuff like that. Personally, I can't see that happening. Too much land involved not to generate revenue (parking garage, shopping, etc.)
As for the infrastructure, it has always sucked and will continue to suck.
The new Metro North station will help folks like me who come in from the 'burbs. As for the roads, fuggetaboutit.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

Hopefully, I will finally get myself to visit both NY stadiums in 2008. For now, I'm planning for Memorial Day weekend.

I found the Yankees schedule here, but not sure it's still tentative, since the 2008 schedule is not on the official Yankees web site.

I didn't realize that 2007 was the final season at RFK Stadium. Oh well!

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

There were two deals today that most people probably consider pretty big deals.

Aaron Rowand signed a five-year/$60 million deal with SF.

And the Astros are actually trying to improve their offense by acquiring Miguel Tejada from Baltimore. But they're sending five young players to the O's, so it'll probably hurt them in the long run. Baltimore gets: OF Luke Scott, 3B Michael Costanzo (acquired from Philly in the Lidge deal), and Ps Matt Albers, Troy Patton and Dennis Sarfate.

Personally, as an Astros fan, I think they gave up too much for Miggy (not unlike the Jason Jennings deal last offseason). But hopefully he'll will give them good offensive numbers the next two years (playing 80 games at Minute Maid Park shouldn't hurt). If only they could get another veteran pitcher now - nothing against him, but having Woody Williams as the likely #2 guy scares me.

Scott: I don't know anything about the five youngsters dealt to the O's...but if they're any good, I'd agree that Houston gave up too much.

While Tejada still has flashes of brilliance...his offense AND defense have both taken a big drop the past couple of years. He's a workhorse...but I think he's definitely on the decline. But, who knows, maybe (like I was saying about Andruw Jones) a change of scenery will create a new spark for him.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

Seems like Tejada and Pudge have shrunk a bit in size and production after the steroid testing started in earnest in the past couple of seasons. Coincidence?

From what I understand, none of the prospects were tremendously highly touted. Maybin and Andrew Miller, they aren't. The biggest factor not mentioned so far would be how the signing of Tejada influences the play of Adam Everett. Everett is a flat out bad hitter, and a flat out amazing defensive SS. All accounts show that he's the best defensive shortstop, by far. If the Astros retain Everett and play Tejada at 3B, his offensive prowess is less impressive at that position. If they play Tejada at SS, he is a big upgrade offensively, and big degrade defensively. I don't know which is the better solution--it's probably easier to justify letting Everett go to the public--but the Astros front office should be plugging away numbers and models right now.

As a Dodger fan, not unhappy about the Giants signing Rowand. He had a career year last year, which was generally outside of his career performance, playing in the sandbox known as Citizens Bank Park. The SF AT&T Park can be brutal to hitters. Wouldn't be surprised if he reverted back into being a .740 OPS type of player next season. Even though Andruw Jones got more money on a per year basis, I like that deal better. Jones could potentially be a better player, and if not, he comes off the books much sooner than Rowand.

I'm not surprised that he signed elsewhere for more money. I knew he wouldn't come back, since the Phillies are one of those teams that are not willing to spend a lot of money.

They may not be highly touted in general, but Patton and Albers are (or were) possibly the two best pitchiing prospects in the Astros' organization. As for Everett, they didn't offer him a contract and he signed with the Twins today. So Tejada will probably stay at SS. Everett's good defensively, but his bat isn't great - .248 career avg. Not sure how much he'll help MIN.

In non-Mitchell report news today David Eckstein's headed north of the border, signing a one-year deal with Toronto.

Oh wait. Yeah, I know why.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

I feel like it's too little, too late, since the home run record is already broken.

I roll my eyes everytime I see Bud Selig say that MLB has do something to correct the steroid problem. Give me a break! He is just as responsible as the players using steroids, not really doing anything about it. At least not with Bonds.

[edit] Nope. List was wrong.

Where did you get your original list from? It looks like they decided to release the de-Soxified list instead.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

De-Soxify? They also de-everyone-ified the list. Here's the guys from the hoax list that aren't on the real list:

Brady Anderson
Manny Alexander
Jeff Bagwell
Aaron Boone
Rafael Bettancourt
Bret Boone
Milton Bradley
David Bell
Dante Bichette
Albert Belle
Wil Cordero
Ken Caminiti
Mike Cameron
Ramon Castro
Ozzie Canseco
Lenny Dykstra
Johnny Damon
Carl Everett
Kyle Farnsworth
Rich Garces
Juan Gonzalez
Nomar Garciaparra
Felix Heredia, Jr.
Darren Holmes
Wally Joyner
Darryl Kile
Matt Lawton
Raul Mondesi
Guillermo Mota
Robert Machado
Damian Moss
Abraham Nunez
Trot Nixon
Jose Offerman
Mark Prior
Neifi Perez
Juan Rincon
Sammy Sosa
Scott Schoenweiis
Alex Sanchez
Julian Tavarez
Fernando Tatis
Jason Varitek
Ismael Valdez
Kerry Wood

Any steroids list that includes Rich Garces is an obvious hoax. How this got through is laughable.

The only way El Guapo was taking steroids is if someone sprinkled it on his combo platter at Casa Romero.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

How would you like to have a Webb-Haren 1-2 on your pitching staff? That's the top of the D-backs' rotation now. The A's sent Haren and a minor-league pitcher to Arizona for six prospects. Not a bad 1-2 punch, eh?

And the Astros make another trade where they trade multiple guys for one. They get closer Jose Valverde from Arizona for P Chad Qualls (who, I think, they should've tried out as their closer next season), IF/OF Chris Burke and another pitcher.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

Rumors are saying the Japanese pitcher Hideki Kuroda will sign with the Dodgers. His stats are pretty comparable to Matsusaka except his era is about a 1/2 a point higher.

Another bad thing about the cheaters is how many minor leaguers belong in the majors if they hadn't been displaced by the dopers?

My buddy Gabe Kapler has come back to the majors and signed a one-year deal with the Brewers.

Yankee lefty Tommy Byrnes is dead at age 87.

Pitched 14 seasons, 11 in NY. Pitched in four World Series.

Retired to his hometown of Wake Forest, NC and served as mayor from 1973 to 1987!

I guess Dan Duquette wasn't an idiot after all, after hearing that Clemens may have started using steroids after leaving the Red Sox.

No, indeed. Depending on how this story plays out, ol' Dan may be looking at some major vindication and validation....or one great big "I told you so!"
