2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove - Page 7

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

David Riske signs a three year deal with the Brewers (with a club option for a 4th year) worth $13-million. It could climb to $20-million, though, with incentives.

============================

The Baltimore Sun is reporting that the Cubbies are making a play for the O's Brian Roberts. He's a very good player.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

CF Andruw Jones signs a 2 yr contract with the Dodgers worth 36 million. he is now the 5th higest average salary player.

This is a good deal I think. I'm surprised that Andruw accepted it but his health is a concern.

Even at his weakest point last year, he was more powerful of a bat than what we had.

Yankees and Giants talking a Matsui deal for pitching.

That would be a surprise. I would think he'd have gotten a no-trade clause when he signed.

Since I've pretty much seen all 10+ seasons of 'druw in center field for the Braves, get used to watching 'druw hitting into rally-killing double plays all season long. I loved the guy's defense, but his plate discipline has steadily gone downhill (even with a good year in 2006) the past 3-4 years, and he'll be lucky to hit .250 for next year or two. I think 'druw got $6 million/year more than he's truly worth at this point in his career.

He does and I'll be very surprised if he's traded.

I think the Dodgers will regret signing Jones.

I would tend to agree...especially at that pricepoint. But, it could be one of those instances where a guy who's been in one place for a long time could see a resurgence in his career with a change in venue. ...and there's always the Torre magic! It will certainly be interesting to watch.

I don't know. He's a gold glove center fielder which is better than Juan short arm Pierre.

He also hit more HR's than any Dodger last year. Jeff Kent led the team with 20.

Also he's only signed to a 2 yr deal. That's a low impact deal. Big money for 2 years but not a 7 yr deal like the Kevin Brown signing.

As a Dodger fan, I don't think this is too horrible a signing. Like Shane said, this is not the biggest contract like Kevin Brown's. The main thing I'm worried about is, since Pierre has a big contract, is that Torre would put Pierre in left, and limit the playing time of Matt Kemp. Kemp is clearly a superior offensive player than Pierre, and deserves full time playing status. OTOH, Torre has had success with home grown Yankees, so hopefully he'll recognize the potential and performance of the young Dodgers such as Kemp, Andy LaRouche, Andre Either, and so on.

Re: Detroit-Florida trade
Any time you can get an elite hitter like Cabrera, I think it's worth the prospects to give up. Maybin could be a great player one day, but it's not for sure, whereas Cabrera is one of the ten best hitters in baseball, right now. I happen to think Dontrelle Willis is a big name that might not perform well--indeed, I think there is a chance that Miller is a better pitcher in '08--but to form a lineup with Miggy, Ordonez, Guillen, Sheff, Renteria, it's worth it. Guys like Ordonez and Sheffield only give the Tigers so much of a window to compete, and winning now should be their goal. Good trade, even though it's unfathomable for Florida to keep on giving away their best players. If Hanley Ramirez is traded next year, Bud Selig should just have contraction and delete Florida.

I figure this deal sets up a trade for Bedard. Kemp is a player that many covet and created some turmoil in the locker room. I really don't want to trade the kid but it might be worth it in a deal for Bedard

Maybe not the biggest and longest...but I think I read Jones is now the fifth highest paid player in baseball? Maybe fifth-highest-paid position player? $18-million a year is definitely a big commitment of resources--even if only for two years.

Like I said earlier, I think the change of venue might just do Andruw a world of good. Maybe he'll really dig playing in the Coliseum!

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

Milwaukee makes yet another bullpen signing, inking Eric Gagne to a 1-year/$10 million contract (with another million in performance bonuses), pending a physical.

Texas signs Milton Bradley to a 1-year/$5 million deal.

YAY! WooHoo!

Erm...uh...as a Red Sox supporter, I am really sad to see him go.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

Hey, I hope he kicks some ass in the National League. As much as I would dread seeing him enter a close game, I never really found myself disliking him.

Just bummed all the Sox get is a sandwich pick for it, since his craptacular performance in Boston dropped him from Type A to Type B.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

Oh man, I wish Gagne no ill will either. He seems like a very likable fellow.

That's all I'm talking about.

It's funny how some very talented players have disastrous stints with certain teams. Happens to the Sox occasionally. It seems to happen to the Mets a lot.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

Even as I was dreading it, though, I've got enough rational brain that I would think, just about every time he came in, that this would be the game where he would turn it around. After all, he'd been good his entire career, including his time with Texas. That's got to be more representative and predictive than the last couple days/weeks/months in Boston, right?

And it wasn't. I can't recall ever seeing a 1-2-3 inning out of him in a Sox uniform. Just one or two outs and then a bunch of swearing in French.

Whatever. I just got through and actually bought some tickets, so I'm a happy guy.

Why am I not surprised to see our resident Sox fans respond positively to "losing" Gagne?

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

We're just glad that Kason Gabbard and David Murphy don't appear to be that big a price to pay. Just a WTF? trade all around from the Red Sox perspective - no reason to expect him to fall off a cliff, and part of his appeal from a Sox POV was that they'd get a first-round draft pick from whoever signed him... And he even wound up falling short of that!

Nice. I haven't been to Fenway since '99.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

LaTroy Hawkins is a Yankee. One year, $3.75-million.

That could be a good pickup for the Bombers.

Does anyone know how to pronounce Fukudome?

10 days after the Mets sign the Nationals Brian Schneider as their catcher...the Nats sign the Mets' Paul Lo Duca.

Are single game tickets on sale now? I need a pair for a Boston/whomever game and a game at Yankee stadium(again I don't care).

I went to Fenway last year for the Police concert but didn't get to watch a game there.

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

The Sox put some April and May games (and then, later, September weekday games) on sale this weekend. I hung around the "virtual waiting room" all day for nothing Saturday, tried again when the September games went on sale Sunday, got a shopping cart full of 8 tix which were released when the shipping information page decided "jayseaver@comcast.net" didn't match "JaySeaver@comcast.net" on the stupid "enter your email twice" thing... And then finally got some more tickets at about midnight.

No Yankees games on sale, though, unless you were lucky enough to get the packages in the first few hours. I think you might actually have to get into a drawing for the chance to buy those, like with the Monster and Right Field Picnic Area seats.

I need a game at Yankee Stadium, too, just to experience the pit once before they blow it up.

Also, I really want to know when the series in Tokyo goes on sale.

And I'm complaining about not getting to Fenway in the past seven seasons!

Seriously, you may need to contact the Athletics. They're the home team for both games (IIRC).

Re: 2007-2008 MLB Hot Stove

I want to know when Dodgers/Red Sox tickets go on sale for the Coliseum. Limited oppurtunity for this so I'll have to strike fast.

I'll try to hit up Yankee and Shea this year in a weekend type affair. I want to see a game there before they blow them both up.

I can't imagine those games will sell out. But...you never know.

A PIT ??

You dare call Yankee Stadium, baseball's home office a pit ?
Please be sure to wear your Red Sox gear to the game and sit in the Bleachers
P.S.
Be sure to go to Stan's bar across the street before the game to assure that you get the entire 'Pit' experience.
