Even though I am using a Harmony, I still can't get my wife to understand how to make it work. I also found out something that might help you. I am using a PS3 for my Blu-Ray. It can be set to component for the Video, & HDMI for the Audio. That way you can get Dolby TrueHD to the Denon as a PCM multi in and still get the Video to the TV with an HDMI on your TV. Hope this helps. Great Receiver so far.

Thats a nice little tip about the HDMI. Will it do the same for my Directv receiver (Hr20-700)?

I'm not sure, but since nobody is broadcasting Dolby TrueHD, I wouldn't worry about it. Just use component for video and optical for your audio.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

A little 'IFy' question re: Audissey, in partcular, about equalizer curve of the front speakers: do you think the curve would be the same, if the auto set up is run (1) with front speakers only and (2) with all the speakers and the sub?

the reason I am asking is in that 90% of the time I listen to music in a stereo mode and, if the set up will be more accurate for stereo with the front speakers only, I would go for this set up...

my feeling is that the result might be different, since the set up of 7 speakers might also take into account the 'interaction' amongst all the speakers...

eventually, I will experiment, but no time to do it now so far...

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Running a HDMI from my HR21 to my 3808, does the Denon have to be on for the signal to go through? I'm having a hard time on how to connect because most of the time we are just watching the TV without eeverything else in use. I'm thinking HDMI to the Denon and for use by my wife just use the component and coaxial to the TV.

Yes the 3808 has to be on...and just like what you're thinking, I have the component outs connected directly to my display.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

i've been getting audio and video drops not together.
maye once an hour the video will go black for about 2-3 seconds.
it isn't the dvr or the tv. it started when i hooked the denon to the tv and dvr using hdmi.

i also get an occasional audio drop that can only be remedied by either turning denon off and on or switching tuners on the 2 tuner dvr.

it happens when i fast forward or rewind then try to play at normal speed.

Components work fine as i did that last night. Only problem is the Denon won't come on. Plugged in to a hot outlet and plugged in to the back of the receiver and no power. The on/off isn't lit even.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

For those that didn't know, there is another firmware updated for the 3808CI. Here is some info on the update from the AVS forum thread:

Firmware version 1.69 - 3808 owners report (firmware update released April 24, 2008):

BUGS/UPGRADE ISSUES

1. When starting Internet Radio station play and song track information broadcast sometimes the Radio station information appears briefly in song track location, is replaced by current song information, and does not display in station information location. When this happens song track information does not update when song changes. You can press the left arrow, wait a few seconds, and it will then show the current song track and Radio station playing (song track information will then update when song changes).

2. When stopping a radio station stream it does not return to the station menu.

3. When a song is paused, browsing music server or USB folders behaves erratically. Should either browse correctly or not allow browsing when song is paused. Do not pause a song and browse music server or USB folders.

4. Web page control after selecting 'save' under 'setup' menu the top of the page says "Save Configration"

5. Internet radio continues to actively stream when receiver turned off (large power button, standby mode).

6. German, Australia, England, French DTS HD HR titles showing incorrectly stereo signal on receiver. Signal not being decoded correctly by receiver.

7. Internet radio presets are lost after update.

8. After initiating firmware update receiver displays "Please Wait..." and does not proceed with update process after waiting extended period of time (i.e. 20 minutes waiting and still message "Please Wait..."). Power cycle receiver using small power button then retry update. Do not power cycle receiver when update in process!

9. Owner reports losing Audyssey configuration after update. Was unable to restore configuration. Update and configuration save/restore performed using wireless connection. Owner switching over to hard wired Ethernet connection to perform updates.

Note: If you are unable to update you might contact Denon support for advise and/or have a network technician pay you a visit.

FIXED/IMPROVED

1. Except when #1 listed above occurs - Internet radio now displays correct track information when song changes for stations broadcasting song track. Album information also displayed correctly and changes when broadcast.

2. Web page control 'setup' menu spelling corrected "INFOMATION" now says "INFORMATION".

3. Dolby Digital flag processing seems to work better.

4. Surround sound quality seems improved.

5. When there are two rear surround speakers with 7.1 configuration the web interface now shows two rear surrounds. Was showing incorrectly only one rear surround speaker in web interface.

6. Audyssey configuration setup/processing seems improved. Speakers previously showing out of phase now correct along with trim level changes. Recommend re-running Audyssey setup to see results. Receiver configuration which includes Audyssey settings can be saved prior to re-running.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Some more info regarding the latest update:

Jeff Talmadge- Director of Product Development Denon USA reports on April 30, 2008 the following are fixed in firmware 1.69 released April 24, 2008:

- The scaling function of the HDMI input did not operate correctly when the
firmware was updated to the latest version.

- Spelling error on web browser display.

- Setup menu does not coordinate with receiver front panel setting.

- When HDMI setting is set to TV pass through, some options should be
grayed out (not available)

- The AVR-3808 appeared the Interpret and Title of song if you have selected
an Internet radio station. (old firmware 1.05) With the new firmware 1.69
we can't see Interpret and Title of song.It only appears the name of radio
station.

- When the route of TwonkyMedia (4.4.4) is selected by "Net/USB function,
it is not possible to reproduce. (For only TwonkyMedia user)

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Gents,

I am coming in at the middle of this thread.

Have not updated my firmware since purchase. I know...
shame on me!

Having a problem that is possibly related to my 3808.
When it is first turned on it drops the HDMI connection
on and off for the first 15 minutes of its use.

Is this a known problem in the early firmware?

With the ethernet connected in the back how do I go about
updating the firmware?

no one answered the above, but I finally had a chance to run Audyssey set up for 2.0 (front speakers only; all other speakers and sub need to be unhooked to succeed, otherwise they are still being checked and set up, even if 2.0 is specified in the speaker configuration).

the result is worth it! the equalizer curve is different and the stereo option sounds better! I tried it one more time for 5.1 and again, the auto set up for 2.0 gives better result.

thought it might be useful for those more interested in stereo...

P.S. eventually, I have stored the 2.0 set up in the Manual file, while Audyssey option is used for 5.1.

Menu-->Manual Setup-->Option Setup-->Firmware Update-->Start

If you have never done one it may take an hour and some people reportled loosing their settings after the first FW updates.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

i'm having a heck of a time using my laptop to control the denon.

i can get into most of the setup menus but when i try to adjust the speaker
configuration it hangs and times out.

actually it is hanging on just about anything i try to adjust.

i do that and get a "current" note.

i see the "infomation" thing so i cant e up to date.

how do i check the fw?

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

If it says you are current then there is nothing to download. Here is a document that shows how to do a FW update and how to check your FW revision:
http://www.usa.denon.com/AVR-3808CIF...te-Web1128.pdf

Please note it is from an earlier FW update so the specific FW revision and and the included fixes are not current.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

i tried that to see fw, buut it doesn't do anything but turn the denon on and off.

ok got it to work.
i have 1.69

i thought one of the fixes in the most recent fw is a fix of the word"infomation" to the correct spelling.

FIXED/IMPROVED
.....

2. Web page control 'setup' menu spelling corrected "INFOMATION" now says "INFORMATION".

Checking firmware module versions for 3808/4308:

Behind front panel hold the 'return' and 'status' buttons down at the same time and turn on the receiver using small power button. Then release the 'return' and 'status' buttons and turn the receiver on using large power button. Then use 'status' button to cycle display firmware module versions.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

I am looking to upgrade my current Denon 1804 to the 3808 or 4308 as they have more power and can handle the TrueHD and DTS-HD.

However, I previewed the 3808 listening to music with large Paradigm and Focal floor standers, and it sounded like listening to laptop speakers. We could not figure out how to improve the sound, so we switched amps and voila the big speakers came to life and actully played bass notes and voice properly.

Is there a way to fix this or did Denon totally create a lemon?

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

i think the denon you were using was a lemon.

laptop speakers?
that has to be a bit of an exaggeration.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Hopefully it was a lemon. It sounded identical to laptop speakers and it was coming out of huge tower Focals and Paradigms. It just sounded like the amp had very equalizer settings. As you know if you play with an eq. you can make anything sound bad. I was thinking that this new Denon requires that auto-equalization for each room and new speakers, so you can not simply plug into the Denon and play music because you will never know what you will get with out the auto (eq) calibration.

What do you guys think about the Pioneer Elite VSX-94TH and the Yamaha RX-V3800 in comparison to this amplifier?

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

I am electronically challenged. I have 2 sets of wall speakers located in my living room and 1 set outdoors on my patio. Each pair of wall speakers has an individual volume control switch mounted on the wall. These speakers are not designed for surround sound.

I have a separate set of surround sound speakers but I do not use the rear speakers. I use front, center, and subwoofer.

Questions: Can I connect both my wall speakers and my surround sound speakers to the Denon AVR3808CI and use them independent of each other?
Will I need a separate amplifier? Can I have all three sets of wall speakers on at the same time playing the same source? Can I choose just to have the two sets of indoor wall speakers on without the patio speakers playing?

Thank you for your help. This site has been fantastic for information. I hope to understand it ALL one day. For now, I would be happy to get sound out of my speakers.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Kim-
Welcome to the forum. I am going to assume that you want the two pair of inside (non surround) speakers to play together as one "zone". Assuming that you hook up your surround speakers as surrounds, you can hook up the two pair of inside speakers as a second zone. These speakers could either play the same thing as main zone, or play something different at the same time. Not knowing if your wall volume controls are impedence matching I wouldn't put the outside speakers as part of this zone. If you got an additional amp you could hook the outdoor speakers up to zone three. It could play the same thing as zone one and two, or something different.

If you wanted all three pair (outdoor, two indoorto work together and play the same thing without buying an amp, you will need a impedence matching speaker selecter. This is a switcher box with a button to turn on each pair of speakers. Set up this way all three pair (not counting surrounds) will be on zone two and will all play the same source (which can be different from whats playing through your front, center surround, sub system.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Thanks for the info! You all should get commissions for selling Denon products!

I just purchased the Denon AVR 4308ci from 6th Ave for $1699 with free shipping and no tax. My husband uses Vista and wants the ability to view images from the PC to the TV (Sony Bravia). I also purchased the Panasonic BD30 Blue Ray from them for $459 (on the advice from this forum)...extra year warranty for $20.

I hope I am not mistaken that with the 4308 I can connect the following speakers in this format:

Zone 1: Surround Sound, 5 speakers
Zone 2: 2 sets of indoor wall speakers
Zone 3: 1 set of outdoor speakers

Questions: Can I play zone 2 and 3 at the same time with a SINGLE source?
Can I play a Blue Ray on Zone 1 and music on Zone 3 at the same time?

It looks like "Setting 5" and "Setting 6" on pages 71 and 72 of the users manual allows for this configuration.

I want to avoid having to purchase a separate amplifier to drive extra speakers...I hope the AVR4308 accomplishes this!

I can't thank you all enough for this forum. Without it, I would have spent $3200 for an Integra system, separate amplifier, speaker selector, Blue Ray and a very expensive installation fee!

Now who can come over and program my remote controls when this arrives? Great food, free beer! lol

Many thanks!
Kim

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Question...

I bought my Denon in October of 2007.

Is it still under some sort of warranty?

Having a persistent problem with the screen going blue
multiple times in the first 30 minutes of operation where
the video adjusts from 1080i to 1080p.

Was doing it much more frequently prior to me upgrading
the firmware but even now it still does it more than it should.

I'll be in the middle of an online video game and suddenly
the screen goes blue as the Denon adjusts. Same thing can
be said when I am in the middle of a movie.

It's not the HDMI cables. Since it happens with ALL inputs
it was easy to assume that the problem was with the monitor
output cable which I replaced.

I love this receiver, but it's getting to be a WTF situation!
