Well Junior, what I meant to say was that most of those on the list I taped years ago from TCM, so it's really unreleased ones that I keep the VCR for. I love watching ICE FOLLIES but it's soooo bad.

Well of COURSE they would but UNTIL they are released to DVD I will have to make do with these, won't I?

Honestly Junior, I can't help but feel you're taking the piss out of me here. I HAVE all of the dvd's but keep the old tapes when they are the only option.

The 2 boxes are a little late Crawford heavy. Sadie Mckee being the earliest. TCM Archives for her silents for sure. I don't know wich ones that still exists. I read here on the board that "Today We Live" might be on a Gary Cooper vol.2. Let's hope it's true. And im very sure "Forsaking All Others" will be in Gable Vol.2.

I hate to pour water on you guys, but I'll be shocked if a lot of the Crawford titles you're discussing now make it to DVD. I don't see a good enough business case for Warner to release all of those Crawford titles.

Even though many of Crawford vehicles from the 30's have similar plots (working girl rising) I think there are some titles that are very important and may have their way into the dvd media.
Some of her earlies may be released under the Forbidden Hollywood banner.
Her oher pairings with Gable are worthy to mention (specially Forsaking All others, Chained and even Love on the Run)
Mannequin (with Tracy) Today We Live (with Cooper) and The Shining Hour (co-starring Margaret Sullavan) are some of my favorites.
No More Ladies is MGM in its full glamour.
Susan and God and When Ladies Meet (Bob Tayloy and Greer Garson) are a good example of MGM star power in the 40's.
So, in my opinion there are, at least, 10 remaining movies that have potencial commercial value for WB to release.
But of course, I don't work inside the company and don't have the slightest idea on how well those box sets are selling. So, I could be very wrong. Just hope I'm not, so we can have plenty more classics on dvd.

The films I could really see being released are:

-Mannequin (quintessential Joan as the shopgirl)
-Susan and God
-Our Dancing Daughters (Her breakout role)
-Forsaking All Others (Gable Vol. 2 I presume) This was her biggest hit at MGM.
-Above Suspicion (the most requested film for DVD after Letty Lynton)
-Dance Fools Dance (was in Forbidden Hollywood on VHS)
-Paid (Joan's 1st dramatic role)
-Letty Lynton (as soon as the rights are cleared).
-No More Ladies
-Chained
-This Woman Is Dangerous (Of course WB is going to put their films in first, plus Joan plays a B-girl )
-Goodbye My Fancy (I wonder if Vincent Sherman did commentary?)
-Possessed (One of the most sizzling Gable/Crawford pairings)
-When Ladies Meet (Garson and Crawford--nothing more to say)
-The Shining Hour
-The Gorgeous Hussy
-Today We Live (Gary Cooper Vol. 2 I presume)

The ones bolded would make Volume 3 if based on votes according to TCM.

The question remains does she sell enough to justify the expense of preparing and marketing all of these titles for a dvd release. IMO, I don't think so. Very true about her silents. The only one I see could be released maybe after those essential MGM ones is Our Dancing Daughters. It was the only silent of hers to be released on VHS, plus a lot of them aren't as classic as Garbo's so you can factor that into as well. Ice Follies might be kind of obscure, but wouldn't it help if it had been released on laser disc already? It probably wouldn't cost as much to restore.

If they can release "Trog" im sure they can release "Ice Follies"

Mannequin is a great picture, I hope it turns up on an Spencer Tracy set.

It does depend on sales, because this brings up an interesting point - how well did the Camp Classic sets sell? Because without a doubt, if you include Ice Follies of 1939, The Shining Hour and a one or two of her final films she could have her own Camp Classics box set.

I don't know what to say about the cover for the boxset. I like it alot...BUT, it does not match with vol.1 like Bette Davis vol.2 match with vol.1
It won't look the same like with Bette on my bookshell

Will buy if only for TORCH SONG...one of the all-time great guilty pleasures.

No piece of scenery goes unchewed.

I've reserved a space for it between VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and THE FOUNTAINHEAD on my DVD shelf.

(the cover art is...odd. It looks like a Taschen coffee table book)

I like it too but it doesn't go with the same style as the last set. I agree a photo of her in the 30s would have been cooler. The cover reminds me of the Katharine Hepburn set cover that came out last May.

Picked up a copy today - it's nice to deal with a place that does not mind selling them before release date. It wasn't even on my list but anything pre 70's is usually a candidate. I hate to admit that the films in Vol.1 are still waiting to be watched! I noticed it comes in a slide out clear plastic slip cover, which reveals a a fold out five panel digipak. I don't really mind them and as is the usual practice the individual panels that hold each of the five discs are clear with a photo behind it. When you first open the digipak the two printed cardboard panels shown list each film with a short commentary as well as the included shorts etc. I have not taken any real notice but it appears this may be the first digipak from Warners and a possible example of how they might be packaging further multi disc sets. Just a guess of course. The best part will be actually watching these five films - soon I hope.

It is not the first digipack released recently by WB. The Katherine Hepburn collection was as you described but they had overlapped the discs on that one. I think it is the way that Vol 3 for Bette Davis will come out as well as the new packaging for Bette Davis Vol 1 and Vol 2. So digipack lovers can now rejoice. I picked up Bette Davis Vol 1 and Vol 2 in the old format recently before they can no longer be purchased.

I think digipack box sets may hinder some of these releases from being released individually as I had to buy the whole Katherine Hepburn set just for the Cary Grant title in it. This was not the case with the Joan Crawford Vol 1 set or Bette Davis Vol 1 and Vol 2 as all of the titles were sold seperately as well since they were in box sets that already contained the individual cases for each movie. I am most interested in the Clark Gable movie in Vol 2 Strange Cargo but looks like I may have to pick up the whole set in order to get it. Amazon has the seperate titles listed for pre-order without any pictures and they are the only dealer I could find that listed them. I suspect that these will quitely come down off of of Amazon's site and all that will be listed is the Vol 2 box set for purchase after release date.

Also not sure on the the admins comments but Joan Crawford had more than enough hit movies with Clark Gable alone to warrent a Vol 3. I honestly don't know why they are releasing so many of her later titles in Vol 1 and Vol 2. Vol 2 is a little better as they got three of her pre war titles included. Vol 3 most certainly needs to be all 30's movies if WB owns all those MGM titles. She was in so many good movies with big name actors in the 30's including Mannequin (1937) with Spencer Tracy, Today We Live (1933) with Gary Cooper and a host of one's with Clark Gable that all have a market at least in my book of getting released in a box set.

To me the 30's and early 40's contained superior movies to anything released later on including all those westerns and epics released in the 50's and 60's (Gary Cooper included).

Because hit films from the 1930s means little to the general buying public of today. Unfortunately, image and perception are everything today and Gable is still recognized as the King of Hollywood during it's Golden era. By the way, they haven't exactly released a great number of Gable or Tracy films either. Furthermore, I never said anything about Crawford not deserving a third or even a fourth volume. However, if you think they're going to release every Crawford film including some of her lesser known ones then these previously released volumes better have a high level of units sold to justify them doing so. Studios usually keep this type of information quiet about units sold and what number is the one that green lights future boxsets, but I hope they sold well enough because even beyond our same last name, I consider her one of my favorite actresses.

As far as your lack of appreciation for films made in the 1950s and 1960s or later, let's just say we have different opinions and leave it at that. Hopefully, most classic film lovers don't limit themselves to just a couple of decades of films.
