HTF HD-DVD Review: Transformers (Highly Recommended) - Page 4

Re: HTF HD-DVD Review: Transformers (Highly Recommended)

I am loving the web enabled intelligence mode, but I have to ask what is the point of creating a log in? Everything worked fine before I did, and after I created an account, absolutely nothing changed. Same thing for various re-boots. Does it do anything other than send the info to Paramount?

This would be one of the only times I am actually ok with sending random data to a corporation, just because I think it's important for them to see our support for the format.

Re: HTF HD-DVD Review: Transformers (Highly Recommended)

I re-calibrated and checked my disc again. To me it is an impressive sounding disc with a solid low end, but it is not overwhelming. I have other discs where the low end is "more impressive." This makes me think that this is just the mix. Has anyone been able to check out my question from a few posts ago (#74 & #76)?

Just guessing here ... but from what I understand, ... I'm pretty sure that this deals with some future upcoming features - the one that allows you to save your favorite clips or scene's that you can share with other fans. To share, Log-in allows you to use Paramounts (?) server as a central storage area that can be accessed by another Logged-in "Transformers" consumer fan.

I thought something was wrong in the opening soundwave scene when the glass broke in the tower, it was definitely muddy and muffled for me. But, after fixing the DRC setting, it sounds really good.
I checked the setting and it was set to AUTO instead of ON or OFF. I have the Toshibs HD-A2. I just set it to OFF now.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Dang...I thought this may have been it, but mine is/was Off (A2). The more I read about this, the more I am coming around to the notion that the bass response on Transformers is not "weak" or "anemic". It's simply not as pronounced as some of the titles that are being suggested as "reference", such as AOTC.

I would be curious to see a post from someone that thinks that the bass is OK with Transformers, who then popped in AOTC w/o changing the volume setting.

I suspect that damage would result;-)

Re: HTF HD-DVD Review: Transformers (Highly Recommended)

I finally got to watching part of this film for the first time today
on HD-DVD.

As much as I savored the awesome "demo quality" picture and sound,
I just couldn't get into the movie. I turned it off after 40 minutes.

Maybe I'm having a bad week. Maybe I'm getting too old for these
kind of films. I mean, I only made it 3/4 of the way through the Blu-ray
of Spider-Man because it was just an awful film.

I just can't tolerate these effects-driven films anymore. Obviously
they are geared to an audience 10+ years younger than I am.

Perhaps when I get out of this slump I'll give these films another try.

Re: HTF HD-DVD Review: Transformers (Highly Recommended)

That's too bad Ron, but I am sure it is not everyone's cup of tea. I guess I am more surprised you made it that far through Spiderman 3.

I am not big on films that are just effects-driven either, but I have enjoyed the Transformers a lot more than I thought I would. Interestingly, so have many of my friends and my wife. Nostalgia explains some of it for me, but that doesn't work with everyone who does like it.

I like your idea of giving it another try at some latter date. I go through phases with the types of films that I enjoy or am interested in at the moment and the worst thing I can do is try to force it.

I also watched this recently and thought that this movie was awful. I’m not against special effects or action, I did enjoy Die Hard 4, but this just didn’t work. I couldn’t care less and at least the movie was 30 minutes too long, 2:22? I mean come on, a movie with no story can’t be over 2 hours! And John Turturro?

Re: HTF HD-DVD Review: Transformers (Highly Recommended)

I thought that the PQ was great, but that the soundtrack was mastered too low IMO, and that hurt an otherwise great audio experience.

I'd never attempt to defend this film's artistic merit, but I will just say that it can't hurt to watch it with a child. They have a way of helping you bring out the kid in yourself, and, suddenly little else matters because there's giant, f*cking robots blowing sh*t up and battling on the interstate. If that can still overcome such a horrenous performance by John Turturro that's saying something, right?

So this movie is basically for kids and 30 somethings.

Re: HTF HD-DVD Review: Transformers (Highly Recommended)

Since i'm 19, maybe it's a bad example, ha, but I seriously wanted to cheer a few times the first time I saw this movie. I just thought that it was fun as hell, and I already really like Shia. I donno, I just really got into it.

Everytime I hear Optimus talk I get pumped, haha. Upon second and third viewings I really started to notice things about the movie that I didn't like, and it starts to seem more and more shallow, however, I still think it's great fun.

The Sector 7 stuff always seemed half finished to me, I was never sure how to accept it, anyways.

I hated Spider Man 3 too though.

You made my day with this post Paul!

I guess it helps if you grew up playing with the Transformers toys and watching the cartoons as a kid to enjoy the film.

My integrated amplifier has a volume control that specifically addresses that issue.

If you meant that some aspect of the soundtrack such as dialog was too low in the mix, that's another issue

If you meant that the difference between the quiet and loud passages was too extreme for your listening conditions, you can fix that with dynamic range compression via your player or receiver.

Re: HTF HD-DVD Review: Transformers (Highly Recommended)

I am 44 and i hated the cartoon of Transformers (anime fan from way back, and anime does it better than this show), but i loved this movie. It was one of two movies i saw in the theater this summer. The DVD experience was just as fun. This isnt high brow art, but its a damn good popcorn flick. Enjoy it for the sugar it is!
The bass was amazing, made my windows rattle. Grat stuff!

Yeah, mine does too, but when it is set to zero or reference and it still isn't "loud enough" that's a problem in my book. I don't generally like to turn my receiver up louder than reference.

Well, I know I'm older then you Ron and I love these types of films. I've watched Transformers 3 times and Spidy once so far. Effects driven films are my favorite, I love to turn my brain off, grab an ale, sit back and just escape, its movies like these that do that the best.

Of course I drive a MINI, my favorite Disney character is Tinkerbell, my best friend is a woman and my favorite film genre is popcorn so my man-card has long since disappeared.

The Transformer toys and cartoon were a little bit after my time (I think they were hot when I was in High School) so I had no prior attachment to the franchise but I did enjoy the film for what it is.

Sure I can pick these types of films apart if I really wanted to but why bother if they entertained me.

Ron are you getting to be a grumpy old man?

I'm normally with you about effects driven movies, however Shia LaBeouf's performance is what really drew me into the film. I just saw Disturbia a few nights ago and again he really raises the level of a film that other wise would be something I wouldn't watch.

I really think this guy is a very talented actor and I think he is going to go far.

I generally agree with you and I think that most action movies have no business being more than 2 hours long.
