*** Official ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE Discussion Thread

Jeffrey Wells has just seen Elizabeth: The Golden Age up at Toronto, and...um...man.

He totally rips it a new one:
http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/archi...beth_the_g.php A quote:

Quote:
I have been to the temple of madness this morning. I have tasted true lunacy. I feel as I've been injected with bad mescaline against my will, and that I need to be taken to the nearest hospital in an ambulance. I have seen Cate Blanchett in silver body armor atop a mighty steed and giving a St. Crispin's [sic] Day speech and wearing a long red "war" wig and wondered, "What's happening here? Is it me or the movie, or should I just take the elevator up to the roof and jump off?"

This is the kind of wretched, at times laughably mudddled historical epic that makes you say to yourself over and over, "Wikipedia's Elizabeth page will save me, Wikipedia will save me...thank God for Wikipedia!"

...Of course, he utterly detests Peter Jackson (to whom he actually sings hosannas when comparing this movie to The Lord of the Rings in his review), so maybe take it with a grain of salt. According to him, it's the next Munich.

Much of the time, though (and as much as I agree with him politically), his grasp of mainstream, non-B&W-subtitled Bulgarian arthouse-cinema is as strong and sure as a baby's grip on a buttered anvil.

unfortunately, the reviews haven't been kind, so people are cautious. a well cut trialer doesn't equate to a great film.

Well, ETGO is great costume porn, if that's your jones. (And I do admit it.) Elizabeth's wardrobe alone is as sumptuous and fantastical as modern cinema and an obscene budget can make it, worth seeing for itself alone...if you're a frock fanatic.

But as much as I love Cate, Clive and appealing Aussie newcomer Abby Cornish (Bess), this is pretty silly stuff.

It *is* a bizarre film, and I don't mean that in a good way. (It might be a hoot to watch stoned, however.) I can't blame it all on director Kapur, much as I'd like to - the scriptwriters must share the blame, especially if what's on the screen is anywhere near the actual shooting script. The character writing, including that for the main trio of Elizabeth, Raleigh and favorite lady-in-waiting Bess Throckmorton, is dodgy at best. Mary Queen of Scots is oddly conceived too (her messy execution is surprisingly sanitized in the movie). Ifan's Jesuit is a one note fanatic. I could have used more Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush).

I don't actually mind if historical fact is ignored in the interests of good drama, if events are combined or eliminated or timelines condensed - I don't even necessarily mind if myth and legend are combined with fact (heck, I love Amadeus), as long as the fimmakers can make something interesting and cohesive from it. It's damned hard to pull this kind of thing off - and Kapur isn't up to it this time 'round. The movie grows silly and campier as it goes, imploding long before the end credits. I expected a peasant to jump up and shout "the Jesuits are coming - the Jesuits are coming!" or maybe IT'S THE SPANISH INQUISITION!" Where are Monty Python when we need them?

Clive does his best Errol Flynn imitation; Cate emotes wildy in a bravura, over-the-top performance that feels like she's playing three different Elizabeths at once: Abby Cornish actually tries to create a real, complex character and almost succeeds. At the big finale with the Spanish Armada, Walter Raleigh/Clive morphs into Francis Drake. Cate morphs into Henry V.

FYI, I went to this with an open mind and purposely stayed away from reviews until I'd seen it. ETGA a literal bodice ripper, but frankly, I'll stick to The Honest Courtesan (Dangerous Beauty) when I want sex in period costume.

This makes Kapur's previous Elizabeth film, also an uneven but much better than this (Cate B was quite wonderful in it), look like Shakespeare.

The only saving grace for me is that I got to see it for free. The bad thing is, when this tanks it's going to make it hard for a *good* hisorical epic to be financed.

Yep, not a good film. Weird, bizarre at times, and just a film that fails to connect really on any level. The ending action sequences felt woefully out of place, fake, and tacked on. Big disappointment.

Loved the original though.
