Well shoot. I have a knack of getting bargains "slashdotted". Let's see what happens on this one.



Amazon is selling the Artur Rubinstein set of Chopin for $19. When I was in college 1971-1975, just the nocturnes alone from this set sold for that price on LP records....in pre-inflationary dollars.

The Penguin guide said the following in 1999, giving it 3 stars and top of the list:

There are some typos in the advert: it obviously isn't "1 disc" but rather 11 discs. This is almost all of Chopin's music. Once this set was on high-priced RCA Red Seal, then about 5 years ago I picked it up on RCA Gold Seal for about $80. It then went OOP and eBayed for around $400.

Getting it for $19 is a steal....IF bloody Amazon isn't smoking anything funny.

I have the 2 CD set of the nocturnes that cost $30 + if I recall correctly.
This does sound like a bargain.

Doc: "Ah, yes. Well, this happens to be a nocturne."
Billy: "A which?"
Doc: "You know, Frederic fucking Chopin."

That 11 disc set is available used at Amazon for $49.50....new for about $55.00

Henry, click the link I posted....it's $18.97 brand new in the box. I ordered 3 for future gifts. The order went through and I have a delivery date (for what that's worth).

Amazon is sometimes schizophrenic. They will have the exact same product listed several times at different prices.

Or maybe you guys in Texas have to pay more for "culture".

Amazon is getting a bit frumpy in its old age. Last spring I bought a Garmin hand-held basic GPS receiver. Amazon had one page where they sold the receiver alone for $100, but on another page had it boxed in a set with a tutorial DVD and some other cheap accessories for $80. You get to guess which one I purchased.

I don't know how optimistic I feel about this one. Even with standard shipping of $3 (remember me..."big spender"?), I get the following shipping info:

Being my standard "cheapskate" self, I'm still using the free shipping. They promise 12 Nov - 3 Dec for me.

Cheap is good.

I got an e-mail yesterday that mine has shipped. The e-mail (which I don't have access to at this moment) said something about them being able to ship it earlier than expected!

Still a good price at just under $30, but it means I probably won't spring for the set (sometimes that's the difference $10 makes). Wish I had seen this thread earlier.

My sets are currently on the big brown truck between Hodgkins IL and Boise ID. I guess I'll give them out in liu of the now-much-delayed Beethoven boxes.
