NYC Season Finale Party Anyone?

Copied from my SPN_NYC LJ comm.

Hey there ladies and gentleman! May 15th is slowly coming upon us...one week to be exact..and you know what that means....SUPERNATURAL SEASON FINALE PARTY! Here is what I am thinking--maybe do the same thing like last year, even though I was not there I heard it was a BLAST--book a room at the Holiday Inn in NYC where everyone chips in for the reservation, order some food, get some purple nurples, have a Supernatural Marathon before the season finale...what do you all think? Well, the season ended up only 16 episodes long as the CW was too cheap to spring for any more than 4 post-strike eps even though they'd committed to a full season of 22 eps prior to the strike.

I assume there must be some sort of strike clause in the contract that voids all full-season orders upon any strike by one of the Hollywood unions. Otherwise, it would seem all these series would have just continued on to produce their full-season orders after the strike ended, rather than having to "negotiate" the return of each show and how many episodes they'd produce.

So they actually went through with killing Dean and now he's in hell. I don't know if I'll like the direction that the show will have to take now with Dean having to come back as a deamon but I'll give the writers the benefit of the doubt.

The last shot of Dean in hell had a "Hellraiser" vibe with hooks going through his skin. The one in the rib and collarbone looked really painful.

Why do I feel a Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey vibe coming from the show? Like Sam will now have to somehow venture to hell to rescue his brother, and i'm not ruling out them having to play Battleship with the grim reaper, either.

Yeah, that last shot was brutal, and I was also cringing when Dean was being mauled to death by that hell hound, that was some cool/painful shit!

Don't worry, they'll figure out some way to get him out.

Loved Dean's line to Ruby upon being able to see her true face...

"Whoa, I just realized, you are one ugly broad!"

Wasn't it ironic also that Dean was so adamant about Sam learning how to use his "powers" in order to help him from dying but the first thing that comes out of his mouth in hell is "Sam...HELP!".

You should've let your brother help when you had the chance...

Yeah, that was pretty nonsensical and led to a fairly unsatisfying season finale, IMO. After all Dean's attempts to prevent Sam from saving him, he's immediately screaming his name.

Also, not only was the season shortened, but that finale episode had to be the shortest of the season. I was recording it and it ran less than 39 minutes without commercials, but including the extended "The Journey so far..." montage at the beginning. So there were probably only about 35 minutes of actual new show. Ridiculous.

I liked the finale just because I figured that Dean would get out of his deal somehow so having that not happen was kinda cool. That being said, I'd imagine that Sam will free Dean from hell by the end of the first episode next season.

They don't keep supporting characters on this show beyond one season. Except for Bobby (and John for one episode of S2), I think every supporting character has died by the end of the year they are introduced.

Speaking of Bobby, did he just hide upstairs the entire time that the hellhounds were coming after Dean?

I really hate the songs Wayward Son (or whatever it's called) and Wanted: Dead Or Alive but I liked them when they were used on this show.

Well, Alona Tal's character hasn't been killed off; I figure there's a chance she'll show up next year now that Cane is a non-issue. I can see a set-up where she and Sam spend the first part of the season searching for a way to get Dean back while Dean's doing something else (maybe Lilith using him to take out rivals).

Dean was alive and not in hell when he told Sam not to save him. He is now in hell - that place of eternal torture and damnation. I don't see why it is surprising that he would be screaming for his brother to help him.

It is hell.

I agree, when your experiencing the kind of anguish Dean was feeling all rational thought goes out the window and you want someone to save you by any means necessary.

Any logical train of thought Dean had when he was in our realm (not ready to call him dead i'm just not) didn't mean a thing to him at that point.

It was clever the way Bobby put the Rosery beads (or whatever they were, obviously something of religious significance) into the water supply and turned the sprinklers into a wall of holy water.

That was cool.

TV Guide reports the loss of a major cast member due to "budgetary issues":

the show’s creator Eric Kripke tells TV Guide it’s bye bye to sexy demon Ruby (Katie Cassidy)

Apparently the budget is the same as last season, but by shooting in Canada the weak exchange rate doesn't buy as much as it used to.

Cast changes aside, I'm still concerned that the show is drifting away from its initial premise that appealed to me in the first place: exploring various urban myths and legendary creatures. It seems like we're just chasing generic "demons" week after week now.

I worry about that; it seems like an almost inevitable result of trying to build up a mythology and continuing storylines, which genre fans all too often seem to clamor for more of. I do think they've been pretty good about regrouping and getting back to the nasty folklore and urban legends whenever the serial stuff gets out of hand.

QFT! I enjoy some of the overall story arc. But, get back to what made the show fun...The monster myth of the week. Don't fall into the X-Files dilemma.

The X-Files always had more monster of the week episodes than mythology episodes.

That's been bugging me as well. I just recently re-watched season 1 & 2 with my wife and it's very clear how much the show has changed. I'm hoping the end of season 3 will be resolved in a relatively short amount of time and they get back to the good old days. It's bad enough the classic rock has all but disappeared. I can accept that it's probably too much money. But there's no excuse for it to just be a different demon week after week. I also wish they'd stop trying to force recurring characters on us (other than Bobby! ) Jo and Ellen were boring. Bella and Ruby were OK. But why not go back to the season 1 format where it's just the boys?

Good ol' Days? I think Supernatural has gotten better with age and especially with the story arcs.
