OK, I just bought a $90 Monster HDMI cable for my new TV and I'm wondering what exactly I paid for other than the monster name. I know I can get cheaper cables online for like $20.....why is monster so expensive. I'm looking for some sort of technical explanation here. Thanks

Marketing and aggressive lawyers are why Monster can charge what they do. The marketing makes you believe the bullshit they spew and the lawyers keep them from going to jail for fraud. Any online site is going to give you cables at a better price. Blue Jeans is a sponsor of this site and are very high quality and reasonably priced. They are also very customer friendly.
PS - Sorry, I know you asked for a technical explanation, but there is no technical explanation because the BS that Monster claims makes them technically superior (especailly in a digital connection like HDMI) has no technical/scientific basis whatsoever.

Re: What's the difference between HDMI brands?
What they advertise does not matter to a digital signal;gas injected dielectric construction and especially RF and EMI shielding, which digital signals are not affected by. I own a Monster HDMI cable that I bought before finding the HTF and I can attest that it is built very well to a fault, the strain relief at the ends is so heavy that sometimes it has worked itself loose from the back of my tv. If I hadn't spent so much on it, I would replace it.

I like that Hanson. IMO Monster makes a quality product. They are sturdy and work great, plus they look cool. However, their value does not match their price. While I may think that Monster makes a good product, they are extremely overpriced and I would never buy another one. You can go to an online retailer like TendonUSA.com or monoprice.com and get a comparable cable for 1/10th the price. If you want a more objective view of Monster and other cables search google for "The Truth about Monster" there is a series of articles that goes pretty in depth.

Re: What's the difference between HDMI brands?
Ok, there are some physical differences in cables. Things like silver or gold wash can help decrease oxidization, thickness of the inner wires work better for long runs, insulation on the inner wires help long runs, sturdy outer jacket and plugs help 'fight' strain where the wires connect to the pins, Baluns near the plugs help reduce interference issues (digital signals are much less prone to interference problems than analog - but there is a limit). Then you get into things like you want a stiff, outer sheath for long runs, but thinner, more flexible cables for in-rack interconnects.
Check out www.bluejeanscables.com . His pages all start with a discussion of the cables and why one cable is different from another.
