More Mister Peepers

I think this may have been mentioned in another thread somewhere, but the latest newsletter from the UCLA Film and Television Archive says "Fans of the show won't have to wait much longer for more episodes. Another DVD set is in the works." The article may be found on page 23 of the newsletter here:

There's no mention as to whether the set will be coming from S'more Entertainment, which released the first set, or some other releasing company. It's probably a safe bet to say that it will be coming from an independent.

Re: More Mister Peepers

It will be from Smore. UCLA has a very good relationship with that company. Both hope to continue with the show until all of the episodes known to exist are released.

I seem to remember some talk of rereleasing the material in the first set in better condition.

Boy, I hope so.

Re: More Mister Peepers

It's official and a deal has been reached! Season two of Mr. Peepers is going to happen. No word on when but the deal has gone through. Personally, I can't wait. I loved the first set, technical issues and all, and I believe there have been some vast improvements made so that this next set should look a lot better.

Re: More Mister Peepers

It would **really** help if they'd get in touch with me... this program was originally broadcast live, after all.

That's really great news, Hank. I'm with you, I enjoyed the first set immensely. I assume that the episode count will be in the vicinity of 24 to 26, plus whatever extras (not that I'm necessarily expecting any though, if she is still alive, it would be nice to have Patricia Benoit involved in some way). I just really enjoy the gentle, subtle humor of this show.

I'm sure they would love to get ahold of her but I don't think they have the slightest idea how to find her. She's been out of the business for 45 years.

Hank, do you have any idea about the individual episodes for Season 2. I'm particularly interested to know if there's a Christmas-themed episode for Season 2. I know there's one for Season 3, but I have no clue about the second season.

Gary "great news all the way around" O.

Re: More Mister Peepers

It's been a while in the making, but I received an E-mail from S'more Entertainment yesterday . . . . .

"We’ve finally signed our contracts with the UCLA Film & Television Archive and on November 11, 2008, we will be releasing season 2 of Mister Peepers at $39.98. UCLA has recently taken delivery of new software that allows them to rejuvenate old kinescopes, remove almost all the flicker and we’re left with some amazingly clear images from these 26 episodes.

The special features are as follows:

· All 26 episodes comprising the entire season 2

· Original commercials

· Interview with Tony Randall about his experiences on “Mister Peepers” produced by the Television Academy.

· Short film explaining what a kinescope is and how they’re made

· Footage of creator David Swift accepting the Peabody Award for the series.

· Episode from the TV series “Suspense” entitled “Murderer’s Meeting” featuring Wally Cox with Jackie Cooper and Mildred Natwick from April 24, 1951. A man escaping from a fresh kill in a hallway makes his way through a building. As he passes an open apartment door, he is pulled inside where a meeting of a club of murder-mystery authors is taking place."

Looks like a great set with nice extras considering the age of the series.

Re: More Mister Peepers

Good news! Thanks for the update, Bob.

I should add, "Murderer's Meeting" has been released in the recent "Suspense: The Lost Episodes Collection 2" from Infinity.

That's a great way to cross-sell the "Suspense" series, even if it has been released by another company. Someone who buys the "Peepers" set but isn't familiar with "Suspense" gets a sample episode of this series that, like "Peepers," was originally broadcast live.

In re-examining the "Mister Peepers" online episode guides that I can find, it looks like there is some confusion as to how many seasons the show actually ran. It might be that what I thought was a 3rd season Christmas episode may actually be an episode from season two. I hope that's the case and that it appears on this upcoming set. Sounds like a nice setup, where Mr. Peepers goes to an orphanage to sing Carols to the youngsters before catching the late bus home for Christmas.

Gary "keeping my fingers crossed that this episode shows up on the upcoming set" O.

Re: More Mister Peepers

Imagine if those kinescopes underwent Kevin Segura's LiveFeed process! On a whole, is every single episode of the series accounted for?

Re: More Mister Peepers

I saw Wally Cox as a guest panelist on an episode of "What's My Line?" that was broadcast by GSN last week. Wally was hilarious -- by the mid-point of the episode, John Daly was practically begging Wally to 'pass' to Arlene so the game could be conducted with some (small) semblance of seriousness.

In addition to the episode of 'Suspense', this episode of "What's My Line?" would also make a nifty bonus supplement.

Back when the first DVD collection was released in the Fall of 2005, my understanding was that UCLA had 102 of the 127 episodes produced in its possession. I don't know wether or not any additional episodes have been found since then.

Re: More Mister Peepers

I can understand why S'more is calling the set what they're calling it, but this batch will not represent the "entire season 2." I'm pretty sure that the first season of Mister Peepers is the 13-episode summer run from 1952, after which the show moved from Thursday to Sunday and got a new director, among other changes. Season 2 would comprise the remainder of the 1952 episodes up through the summer break of 1953.

The first DVD set contained the initial 13 segments, and then the first 13 from the second season. So another batch of 26 could indeed take the show to the end of the second season, assuming they did the typical 39 episodes in the second (it was customary to produce 39 episodes of a live show and then 13 weeks of a summer replacement). However, it would be a lot less misleading if S'more just called this collection "Volume 2."

(But don't get me wrong -- minor quibble aside, I'm delighted that we're getting another batch!)

Re: More Mister Peepers

S'More has really done a great job with this s-2 set. I'm so glad they've kept the commercials intact within the body of the episodes. Plus, some fine extras, including a 1949 film on the process of making kinescopes (which even had a clip of a late-30s kine!). Totally fascinating stuff. As for the episodes themselves, the kinescope print quality has definately improved since the first volume. And, it really is a terrific little series, full of marvelously dry humor. There's even an intriguing serial-esque undercurrent to the show, unlike most of the 'filmed' sitcoms of the day (other than perhaps Lucy's trips and some occasional thematic continuations on "Love that Bob"). Anyway, I'm really grateful to S'More for this fine collection.
