It'd be a slam dunk if they could get Burton to direct an ep. Sweeney Todd is due in December, so he might just have a hole in his schedule.

I'm actually quite surprised nobody has suggested the touchstones that popped in my mind immediately...

The highly-stylized opening with the bright colors, the narration and the bittersweet and tragic tone all seemed like elements right out of 'Amelie' (oh, and counting out the life span in years, weeks, days and minutes was also an element in that film, I believe)

The visuals of the pies and the whole obsession with them seemed right out of the movie 'Waitress.' Admittedly, this is probably more of a coincidence...

I was a huge fan of 'Wonderfalls' (which also starred Lee Pace, who was given some great material in the later episodes of that series), and I may grow to like this show if they go in some interesting directions as the season goes on. I think I was a bit surprised as how convoluted all the "rules" were in this show, and all the tragedy kind of set an odd tone. Plus I thought the 'Amelie' elements were very, very obvious. All of these things together made me a bit hesitant.

But I do enjoy Chi McBride, so who am I kidding? I'll be watching regularly.

I don't think they intended that connection, because that consequence hadn't been introduced yet. Drawing on the show's internal logic as well, the re-animating of the fly is separated from Ned's mother's death by a playdate with Chuck, distancing the two events by too long an amount of time for them to be related.

Even if there wasn't another episode of this show, the pilot episode was worth the price of admission. I was a little apprehensive about the potential angst in having a loved one that you couldn't touch, but they hit the right note there.

I agree, tho, that they may have a hard time keeping it up. Time will tell.

As an aside, I'm amused that Chi McBride is involved with another project with dead people. (as well as The Frighteners.)

The first thought to me was "Amelie" as well, Derek. And, while I thought it was almost a blatant rip-off of it (the fairy tale narration, whimsical romance, exaggerated camera angles) it still charmed me entirely.

I hope they do keep it in it's world but try to be less "Amelie-esque" and more "Daisies."

And a one-eyed Swoosie Kurtz rocked!

I really liked the one-eye joke, were the aunt couldn't see Chuck, but they picked the wrong eye/side.

Right. I imagine some other nearby fly or insect died an unnatural death at the one minute mark to balance things. His mother died of natural causes (the narrator said brain aneurysm).

How do we know the brain aneurysm isn't the agent of balance for the fly's ressurection? I was under the impression that the kitchen scene with the fly and the kitchen scene with the death were all one scene, that the playdate had already happened and (watching Chuck across the street) was what spurred Ned to flashback to it.

Dummy episode - good and still lots of fun.

I enjoyed Olive singing "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and having the floor waxer/cleaner do his thing in the background as she was singing.

I liked Ned's invention to his car so he and Chuck can ride up front together and the addition of the glove, in order to hold hands.

we learned new things about Chuck and Emerson.
Like Emerson loves to knit in his quiet time and Chuck can speak Japanese.
So many unusual things in the show so far.

The Dandelion SX car "It will blow you away" :lol

Wondering if they spent all the budget on those two dandelion cars

I will always see the crash test dummy killer/Mark Chase as Professor Hank Landry from Veronica Mars

After the fly comes back to life, Ned looks out the window and sees Chuck outside with the miniature town of houses made of cardboard. We then see them outside destroying the town, then Ned is back inside being "broomed" by his mother. When Ned's mother comes back to life, we see Chuck's dad fall over and the cardboard houses are destroyed.

The state of the houses are what tells me that the playdate happens in between.

Grease is one of my favorite all-time favorites, so it was great to hear "Hopelessly Devoted To You" performed by a broadway quality performer (Kristin Chenoweth).

This is a fun show. I'm glad to see Sonnenfeld involved with something of quality. It's been a while. I'm also baffled by the accusations of this being such a blatant ripoff of things like Amelie and Burton. Can't anyone do a fairy-tale show and not be accused of such absurd things?

I'm just not feeling this show i'm sorry to say, the second episode was very cute but outside of that it didn't really do much else for me.

I've also become obsessed with watching how closely Ned and Chuck come to touching! I couldn't take my eyes off their elbows and got scared when they would be within an inch of each other.

As soon as she started singing 'Hopelessly Devoted' I could practically FEEL half of the viewing public tuning out and thought to myself "this show is toast".

High concept AND musical numbers, there's no way the general viewing public will stand for that in this day and age. Again this isn't me talking, I liked the musical number i'm simply saying there's no way the public at large will continue to support this show, I can feel it in my gut, guys.

and yet high number of people will watch countless drivel like American Idol, Singing Bee and so forth. Shows that don't have any style and is most of the times talentless.

I for one am in love with this show and is the best kind of storytelling ever.
It's sad when the avergae TV viewer can't see this

I do think this is walking a very thin line - I like the nifty Barry Sonnenfeld visuals and odd fantasy storylines, and some of the lines do slay me ("and Digby considered how much he loved salt..."), I do have moments when I think, man, is this overly precious. That musical number, for instance, just seemed to go on forever and didn't really earn its time.

And as much as I like her, Kristen Chenowerth could be dropped from the show with practically no ill effect.

I never meant to imply that the show was a blatant rip-off of 'Amelie', only that it reminded me strongly and used some elements from it. It's the curse of watching waaaay too many movies and TV shows. In the end, it will be the stories and the characters that develop within the series' continuity that will keep me interested or make me tune out.

I liked the second episode. Very interesting balance of a lot of different tones. Ned is not the typical main character as he's so passive. I was going to say that he has to deal with two very active personalities in Chuck and Emerson, but I can't say that Emerson is even that strong of will, though he and Chuck are definitely at odds. One of my favorite bits in the second episode was the conflicting approaches of Emerson and Chuck in stealing an access badge.

I know, it sucks. While I don't really care for the show right now I am able to see how well crafted it is. Where as we, the members at HTF, look at it and see how beautiful, well acted, well structured and different it is because we notice and appreciate that kind of thing most people will look at and think it's just plain weird and I think it's reasonably safe to assume they outnumber us.

I enjoyed last nights episode, but not as much as Pie-lette.

I sat there in a panic while watching due to the fact that Ned and Chuck always stand so close to eachother and I am afraid they will end up bumping into eachother. There were a few instances where I thought Chuck was 2 seconds from death. I think the writers need to be more aware of their spaces. That is going to drive me crazy with this show.

The dandilion car storyline was not as interesting as I thought it could have been. I think the way they resolved the crime was a bit underwhelming. Car chase takes place, bad guy runs out of gas and police just happen to show up? Not buying it. They should have come up with a much better ending to this show.

I did enjoy the random little facts we learned about some of the characters. I loved hearing "Hopelessly devoted". It was a bit out of place, but I think this show is going to have weird off beat moments like that, which is okay with me.

I still just absolutely love the whole Ned and Chuck vibe. It is so sweet and so sad at the same time. All those strange little moments like Ned holding his own hand, or having Emerson hug Chuck for him or how they kissed through the body bags. I just love it.

So I still really like this show and I really hope it does well in ratings, because I think the writers have something great here.

I was thinking the very same when I saw them together in scenes. I really like the quirkiness of this show. Unfortuneately, quickiness usually doesn't add up to big enough ratings numbers to keep a show on the air. I hope enough people are watching this shos to give it a chance to survive at least an entire season.

I know! It was terrifying actually to see them stand so close, I kept wanting to gasp and cover my eyes! And yes the show seems to forget Ned and Chuck's close proximity, they need to watch that because it's frankly scaring the shit out of me lol.

Count me in as someone else who is overly distracted by the show's nonchalance about their proximity. And no worries, I don't think it was possible to not have weird thoughts after seeing that glove attachment in the modified car.

Another solid episode, all in all. Next week's episode looks like it's going to tackle some issues that I was hoping they would address - namely, the Funeral Home Director's death & the inevitability of Olive discovering Chuck's 'condition' and doing her best to get Ned to touch Olive. That last part is my prediction but mark my words, it seems headed in that direction. If the writers find another, less predictable way out, I'll be impressed.

They must be setting up something with the Kristen Chenowerth character. Given how much time they spend with her and her touching obsession, somethings up! My guess is they might use her as a surrogate for Chuck, in the figurative sense.

I think this is my favorite show on television right now (especially since I lost access to the CW network).

And I, too, am obsessed with how close Ned and Chuck seem to come to touching all the time. I swear Ned brushed Chuck when he was clearing the plates from the booth last night. Chuck was leaning forward against the table as Ned reached in to grab her plate. When they reversed the shot, Chuck was leaning back away from the table so maybe someone on the set was like, "Um...maybe there should be a little more space between them?"

I don't see how they can possibly maintain this "not-touching" thing between the two for multiple seasons (if it lasts). Between all the potential for accidental touching, and that Olive and Emerson would both like to get rid of Chuck once and for all, it seems like it would verge on the ridiculous to keep them apart for more than a few episodes. Especially as Chuck seems rather blase about the whole thing, calling "shotgun" and such, when she knows the potential consequences.

I get the same stress from the dog. How can he even be around the dog? How do you keep him from brushing against you or jumping up on you?

Also, has it been stated that keeping an animal alive more than a minute will cause the death of another animal? or could it cause a human to die? When he touched all the frogs, how did he know that all his classmates werent going to start dropping dead?

I think Sonnenfeld was keenly aware of their spaces and putting the screws to the audience a little. I had to laugh at the huddle when they were looking down at the dummys.

It was entertaining, but a big drop from the pilot. Nothing could have been that good, I guess. The musical number had me cringing at first, but it was so well staged and performed that it quickly won me over.

Great to see Prof. Landry. I've now seen him on Veronica Mars, Joan of Arcadia, and this, and he has never failed to be excellent.

Good to see we're going to get flashbacks here and there, and the gun cozies were about the funniest thing I've ever seen. The knitting gag was well-played throughout.

"Do they ever touch?"

"I wish they would."



I think I had too high expectations, and was probably a little tired when I started this, which accounted for my feeling that it was a drop. I should have kept the recording, because I have a feeling I would absolutely love it a second time. It is filled with greatness when I think back on it. I may scope out the online replay.

Thought yesterday's episode was entertaining. Definetly not as good as the pilot. Some observations that I agree with that was already mentioned, first Chuck I thought was hovering too close and I thought at one time the hands were going to touch by mistake. Next the plot was ok but it had that weird like Monk feel to it. The position of the glove does raises eyebrows. My wife actually watched most of it and didn't think it was too bad.

Among other things, I appreciate the show's focus on cleavage.

Ned and Chuck get way too close all the time -- jumping into that pit was very dangerous -- but obviously they can't touch, because then the show would be over. I figure Chuck is safe, at least for the first 13 episodes
