we have someone physically watch the disc on a HD DVD player before we send it back out to you.

I want that job! Are you hiring?

Re: Analysis on HD DVD Combo discs

I spoke with the person that is processing the discs. He said that he sent you a tested disc in your original packaging. I believe I sent you a seperate PM on this?

Re: Analysis on HD DVD Combo discs

How are you testing the discs we send in?

Unless you are watching them on the same machines we are having problems with, you may not get the same errors.

For example, there is a thread at AVS forum where many people have reported having problems with certain HD DVD's when they played them on their Toshiba players, such as the XA2 that I have, but they were able to play the same HD DVD discs with NO problems on their X360 HD DVD add on player.

Here is a link to that thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=810932

So while that's good news that the MS player seems to be less "picky" about what discs it plays, it doesn't help those of us with a Toshiba XA2 or any other model if you are testing the discs that we send to you on a X360 HD DVD add on player.

Also, I hope that you are doing a very close physical inspection of the discs because some people have reported manufacturing defects are causing some of the problems.

Please explain your testing procedures for these discs.

Thanks, Steve

Re: Analysis on HD DVD Combo discs

We test the disc that we send back on the same player that is specified in the first question that we ask at the origin of this thread. This is why we ask the first question so that we can test on the same model and so that we can keep track of what models might be causing more problems.

Re: Analysis on HD DVD Combo discs

How long does it take to get the replacement disc?

I mailed in "Hot Fuzz" last Monday night after the mail pick-up (Nov 5).

Since I am in Bellevue WA, only 20 minutes from Microsoft, it would have gone out the next day and should have been delivered no later than Wednesday (Nov 7).

As of Today (Nov 15) I have not received a replacement disc. If you mailed it from Microsoft I should get it in the mail the next day.

I noticed other guys on this forum got replacments pretty fast and since I am in the neighborhood I figured I'd have my replacement disc by now.

I need it ASAP because if it still doesn't work I am sending it back to Buy.com for another replacment.

Re: Analysis on HD DVD Combo discs

I'm weighing whether to send in my copy of "300." I exchanged my original copy today. On first play, it was glitchy, but later it seemed to be OK. I'm going to test it again tomorrow and if i can replicate the glitches I'll send it in, assuming you haven't reached the 50-disc mark by then.

Re: Analysis on HD DVD Combo discs

Steve/CBW-Kevin has been overseas the last few weeks and I know his connectivity has been spotty. He should be back in US and in the office on Monday. I'll leave a VM for him requesting him to verify shipping status with the people doing the testing and post and update.

I received my replacement copy of "Hot Fuzz" today.

It appears to be brand new, but it had been opened. They told me that they test the replacement disc on the same type of HD DVD player before they ship it out to make sure it plays properly.

I tested the disc today. My other copy had been "sticking" with error code 408bc504 at about 58 minutes into the movie.

This disc played that section perfectly without any problems. I played it a couple of times just to make sure.

So it appears that the problem was with the disc.

There was no comment with my replacement disc as to what kind of problems they found with the disc I sent it.

I would like to know, so if you can post on this thread it would be very informative.

The program has not died. Your disc that you got should have been tested before it was sent back to you. Does the disc that you go work properly?

Yes I got my replacement disc and it works fine. I have not watched the entire movie start to finish, but I watch the "bad spot" a few times and it played perfectly. I also skipped around and watch various scenes and it seems OK. I will watch it again when my kids come out for Christmas.

I was just curious to hear what you found on my "bad disc" that caused it not to work.

I had the same problem with "A Clockwork Orange" it freezes at exactly the same spot every time, about 55 mins. in.

I am wondering if this has anything to do with the layer change on these discs.

Clockwork is NOT a combo disc.

I'm sending it back for a replacement.

Re: Analysis on HD DVD Combo discs

Hi Kevin,

I'm sending the combo disc of Bourne Ultimatum, it always freezes in the same spot. The SD-DVD side plays fine.

Re: Analysis on HD DVD Combo discs

Kevin,

Please disregard my post above, I wanted to test Bourne Ultimatum before sending out one last time and now everything is fine, it no longer freezes. Maybe I just needed to give my player a rest for a while.

Thanks,
David

Re: Analysis on HD DVD Combo discs

Just checking on the status of this program...

I had some problems with my brand new copy of "Shaun of the Dead" (skipping begins at the 1 hr. & 30 minute mark w/o fail) and my combo version of "Hot Fuzz" (intermittent skipping) and would like to send them in...can I still do so???

Also interested if program is till open....

I've encountered the 408bc504 error on Disk 9 of the TOS set. Specifically, the error occurs in the Alternative Factor episode shortly after Capt. Kirk makes his way into the alternate universe.

I recently upgraded my XA2 firmware to v 2.7 so the error has been occuring on versions 2.5 and 2.7. It is a repeatable error.

This was also posted in equivalent AVS Forum thread.

Re: Analysis on HD DVD Combo discs

Great!!!!

Then if I still can, may I please send forth my copy of Brokeback Mountain, which has given me nothing but grief since the day I bought it? It often sticks when I get to a particular point when Enis' marriage comes undone. The SD side, however, plays great. Thanks.

Re: Analysis on HD DVD Combo discs

Kevin et al.:

FWIW I'd like to post word of a Combo anecdote involving Eastern Promises.

A "Black Friday" circular coupon (valid through 1/20/08) for a free high def rental took me into my local Hollywood Video recently. They just started renting HD DVD and BD; the copy of Promises I rented was near-pristine.

Upon inserting into my HD-XA2 (updated to f/w 2.5 which I understand is not the latest; 2.7 is) the display flashed "LOADING" (and "1080i," the max rez of my display) for the better part of 5 minutes. No responsiveness to button presses on the remote or player. Lots of drive movement sounds indicating the player was attempting to read the disc. Powered down by holding down the On/Off button; disconnected power cord until red light around On/Off button went off.

Powered up; display started flashing "LOADING" again; pressed "Open/Close" shortly after blue light at bottom of front of player illuminated, which I presume means power up cycle is complete. Several beats before disc eject, with error message on screen stating (paraphrased) 'Disc Error - This Disc Is Not DVD Format.'

Removed the disc; ran it under warm water and wiped gently with soft cotton bath towel in radial line from center to edge. Reinserted; same flashing (only now "HDMI" flashed as well, indicating that perhaps I did not have handshake on first attempt) but for shorter period of time. Display finally read "HDDVD," but playback would not commence after pressing "Play" on remote or player.

Ejected. Standard def side plays fine on both the XA2 and a Pio 563A SD DVD player.

I had an HD-D1 from August 2006 to August 2007. Got the XA2 in September 2007. Have been purchasing and renting HD DVDs for that entire period. I have heretofore avoided Combos due to the 'bad press' online. This is my first Combo experience. I have never experienced this kind of player behavior before with either of my HD DVD players, even with more visibly scratched Netflix HD DVD rentals.

I'd send you the disc but, again, it was a (very clean, new) rental.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who appreciates the attention this matter is receiving, but who also would be interested in--and respectfully requests-- some kind of summary of your findings being posted here a few weeks after the imminent close of this HTF-involved part of your Combo testing.
