Bass Traps

I read that bass traps are benificial when listening to music. Is the same true when it comes to home theater ?

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Room acoustics are a factor no matter what you are listening to, so if you improve the conditions of your room then yes movies will benefit also.

I definitely concur with what John said. The room is the most overlooked audio component. I've set-up many systems made up of the same equipment and have experienced 1st hand how much difference there can be in the room. There are sites like www.readyacoustics.com that make it easier and cheaper to make treatments. If you dont' have a real time analyzer an SPL meter with test tones (either downloaded or from a disc) can give you some indication of room issues from the listening position.

I finally got around to installing some room treatments yesterday. I have to admit, I'm really surprised at how much improvement they've made. I spent the day picking them up (GIK Acoustics...local to Atlanta, GA) and hanging them, then stayed up until around 4am listening to how much better everything sounded. I'm new to this aspect of the hobby, so I'm sure I'll make changes, but so far I'm really, really impressed with things. It's amazing how much of an impact the room really has on the sound!

I already had bass treatments the main system (some ASC tube traps, some home made and a piece from acousticsfirst.com) to tame the problems. I bought the kits for midrange panels from readyacoustics.com. I think the fabrics come in 6 colors to cover them. It was easier with a 2nd person helping (they have a manual on their website). They come with straps and hooks to go on the wall but I opted to build oak stands for them which were easy to make from ready cut (2 foot long pieces of) 1x4s and 1x6s from Lowes, some wood screws and natural oak stain.

I placed 3 acoustic treatments around the seating. For some bass traps I contoured the rear wall to the angle of the seating, then filled this area with insulation. Not too easy to see in this picture, but from the area between the first and second seat back row, the wall tapers forward to the corner behind Han Solo. Same area in the other back corner is filled with insulation also. Definitely cleaner sound than my last theater that had the same speakers but no treatments.
