HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

Thread Starter
Beginning in January 2008, the HD-DVD Combo will be discontinued by Warner Home Video for the Theatrical New Release Business Unit. Warner will be offering the HD version only.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be the last title we are offering the HD-DVD Combo for. The Invasion will be the first HD only title on the TNR release slate.

Thank goodness.

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

While I never had any issues with the combo, nor did I mind paying an extra $5 bucks for a "failsafe" (If HD never takes off, I still have the DVD)...but I'm not sad to see the combo go, either.

It'll probably mean better busienss for HD DVD anyway.

Now to get Universal to follow suit.

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

Finally!! At last the studios seem to be realising the whole "combo disc" was a huge mistake. This is great news, and along with Warner's re-issue of many of the combo titles as HD-DVD only discs, means a win win situation for the consumer.

It's all about consumer choice. With the combo format the consumer HAD to buy the DVD version even if they only wanted the HD version. Indeed they may never intend to watch the DVD version, but they still had to pay an extra $5 for it.

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

Isn't this at odds with their idea for TotalHD? Or are they slowing one multi-format disc down in order to start up another?

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

Now if only Universal would follow suit.....surely they are getting sick of the complaints, disc returns, and bad PR in general.

Excellent. I mean EXCELLENT!

I do not believe Total HD will EVER see the light of day.

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

I thought that Total HD is on hold if not dead.

a glorious day, and the only reason I say that is due to prices

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

So... Are they dropping $5 from the price? That's my only objection to combos. Sure, I don't think they'll price HD-DVD-only discs $5 more than the equivalent BD, but studios do things that make little sense all the time.

Indeed. Now it makes sense why they are pricing the Order of the Phoenix combo at the same price as the Blu version.

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

We watched our first combo the other nite. "Knocked Up"
Watched first 1/2 upstairs on the hd-a2 in HD with no probs. Finsihed it up downstairs last nite with the sddvd side and had freezes and pixillation.
On the SD dvd side.
Just looking at the thing it's amazing these work at all. Honestly like somebody just glued 2 discs together. Cutting edge tech... NOT

I am wary of Trek: TOS being a combo now. 10 discs..?
How long will it take to go through ALL eps, both sides to make sure you don't have a defective disc? eesh

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

About time they got rid of it. I hope they lower prices to follow suit.

I wonder if they dropped the combo because they weren't selling as well(as the Blu version at $5 cheaper) or if the complaints about faulty discs finally wore on them.

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

Does this mean they'll re-press the titles I want as just HD-DVD version only?

It seems that way: on Amazon many previous Warner combos start to show up as new HD DVD-only re-releases at a price point of $23.

Warner are re-issuing several titles that were previously combos, as HD-DVD only discs, starting from next week (October 2nd) apparently.

See this story from High Def Digest for more info;

They are releasing their combos in HD-DVD only form in October. Those are lower priced.

I'm picking up a couple because of it for sure.

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

Yes, hopefully Universal will follow suit, as well. There are some titles I refuse to buy because they are combos.

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

if there's a small price drop, and with the amazon 10% discount ending, i'm about even at least on new titles

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

I'm guessing once Universal sees the sales jump on Warner HD-DVDs because of the combo drop, they'll finally see the light. Of course, this may be bad news for the Blu-Ray camp.

It is not too late for Warner to release Trek in a non-Combo set.

I personally never had any major problems with the Combo's, and have many times utilized the SD side, but with all of the negative press they took, it is probably good that Warner is dumping them.

I don't know, since Paramount/CBS is releasing them. Aren't they ?

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

I've had one combo experience so far and it had problems. that's 1 for 1. 100%, batting a thousand. Doesn't bode well. I mean the thing looks ridiculous. 2 discs just glued together? It's amazing they work at all.
And even if you get a disc or a set that appears to work, who's to say in 3 months that you won't have problems? Too late to return them...

agh...

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

I never noticed, but, I just went to look at my copy of "300",which is my only HD DVD Combo, and it does look like they glued 2 discs together. Man, that is shitty. I mean it works alright, but still. I thought they had resolved the issue after the infamous "DVD 18 (two sided sd dvd)" crap they were doing for TV sets at Universal as well as other companies. Those who don't learn from the past....Well, you know. Guess they learned.....Finally.

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

It's about time.

So far I've been able to avoid the Warner combo's by just opting for the BD version but this is great news if it leads to Universal also dropping it. It's the exact same bastard technology used for the problematic DVD18's so I'm amazed Universal has used them this long unless they own some kind of patent on the technology.

It's really unfortunate that CBS is using it for Trek.........10 discs to QC............ugh. I'd be willing to pay more for a non-combo set just for the peace of mind.

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

It was a very clever idea on paper...but consumers just didn't seem to dig it. My 300 combo won't even play the sd side. Not that I really wanted too but that is the idea.

The good news overall is that Warner (and other studios to some degree) DO listen.

Re: HD-DVD Combo discontinued by Warner Home Video

I've got 7 or 8 combos never had a problem with any of them, and I use both sides. This just means that now for some titles I will have to buy an HD version and an SD version. I think it stinks.

If I own the HD version does it make it legal to rent and copy the SD version? Hmmmmmmmm
Doug

Edit: that was a joke guys
