Need some speaker advice

Well i'm new to this forum but i have a few questions for you guys. Just so you can sort of get to know what i want to get out of all this, and what my budget is like, I'm a college student, i watch alot of movies, and at the moment im unemployed until next week. Lately ive been having problems with the sound coming from my TV.

First, I have a relatively new TV, a Vizio VX37L HDTV and i Use my Xbox 360 or PS3 as DVD players. I dont have any blu ray movies yet due to me not having a job as of now (good thing i start next monday) and blu ray is a little more expensive. The problem im having is when i play DVDs, the sound is extremely quiet. i usually have the TV volume at around 30 when watching TV (and i have bad hearing so i could probably put it around the low to mid 20s if i could hear better) but when i put in a movie, the sounds drops drastically, requiring me to turn the TV up to AT LEAST 80, usually higher if there is any sort of background noise. Maxing out my TV volume isnt something i want to do every time i wanna watch a movie. SO i was wondering, do you think it's the TV? or are my consoles just poor excuses for DVD players. I'm prety sure i noticed the same problem when using my xbox 360 on my old tv, a Sanyo DS24425 (Silver) flat screen TV.

Second, whether its my TV or consoles, I was thinking of getting some speakers to try and remedy the problem. at the moment i dont have alot of money, but one of the few things im willing to spend money on would be a good set of speakers. i do have other things to spend my money on so im thinking a good budget would be around 200 dollars, 400 tops, since its not something i NEED to live. i mean, my apartment is rather barren at the moment, and i was hoping to decorate a little so it wouldnt be so bland, so i dont wanna spend my whole budget on just the speakers.

Sorry if i rambled a little bit i just wanted to make sure you could properly help me by knowing a little more about my situation. Thanks alot for the help

Re: Need some speaker advice

Oh and BTW im very frugal when it comes to spending my hard earned money, but when i DO buy something, its usuallly something i know ill be using for awhile, is a sensible and practical buy, and is of good quality. Of course with quality i cant always have the best of the best, but i like to know i got a quality product for the amount of money i spent.

Re: Need some speaker advice

I would say start with a good pair of bookshelf speakers in that price range. There should be a decent selection right around $200-300. I didn't see any mention of a receiver of any kind, so that is something else that likely needs to be factored into the picture as that is at least another $100-200 for a stereo receiver.

Re: Need some speaker advice

I doubt the volume problem is due to your consoles being poor DVD players, as both have received good scores for their ability to play DVDs and high definition disks.

Different sources can output volume at different levels, which is why most receivers provide the option of volume leveling between different sources so that there is not a huge change in volume when you switch from tv to dvd or video game system, etc... Since you are not running this through a receiver at the moment, you don't have that control option though. Is there any option in the setup menu on the PS3 or XBOX 360 to adjust the volume level that it outputs at? Does the tv have an option in the setup menu to change the output level of different sources? I'm guessing no to both of these questions as my tv and the PS2 don't allow for this, but maybe yours do (I don't have any HD gear yet so I'm just guessing).

Your better option is definitely to go with a receiver and speakers in the $200-$300 range, as John mentioned. I have $200 Athena speakers and even at this low level, they are a huge step up for music, video games and movies over anything that tv speakers or small, cheap HTIB speakers can produce.

Thanks to both of you for your help.

Ennsio: no there is no options likethat on either my TV nor my consoles, which sucks immensly. and yes i did forget to factor in the reciever, my bad lol. sems like the reciever is the thing thats gonna help me the most. Ill look into all this, and thanks again guys.

Re: Need some speaker advice

Not all receivers allow you to "level match" across sources. Some allow you to have a separate calibration for each source, which in essence achieves this goal, but most only calibrate to a known reference (75dB) for all speakers. This gives you properly calibrated speaker levels but does not take into account each source's individual output volume.

How is each device connected to the TV?
