SIX-DISC BOXED SET DEBUTS DECEMBER 4

CULVER CITY, CALIF. (September 24, 2007) – Three of the earliest film classics from stop-motion animation genius Ray Harryhausen will be available for the first time in vibrant color when Sony Pictures Home Entertainment debuts the Ray Harryhausen In Color Gift Set December 4, just in time for holiday gift giving. The six-disc boxed set features two-disc special editions of -- It Came From Beneath the Sea, Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (each making their two-disc DVD debuts), and 20 Million Miles to Earth: 50th Anniversary Edition. In addition to the pristine, digitally-restored black & white original version, each film will now be available in a brilliant newly colorized version, and viewers will be able to toggle between the two as they please. Also included in the gift set is a collectible Ymir figurine based on Ray Harryhausen’s original 1957 hand-crafted design.

Releasing day and date, 20 Million Miles to Earth: 50th Anniversary Edition will be available in high-definition, only on Blu-ray™ High-Def for $28.95 SRP. The boxed set will sell for $59.95 SRP.

With the cutting-edge high-definition colorization technology, developed and patented by industry leaders Legend Films, Harryhausen has been able to visually recreate his films. Harryhausen said, “I am thrilled these films are finally being seen in color. I had wanted to do them in color in the 1950s, but the budgets were not large enough to accommodate that luxury. Now, thanks to the marvelous advances made in the colorization process by San Diego’s Legend Films and others, audiences will be able to see the movies as I originally intended.”

20 Million Miles to Earth: 50th Anniversary Edition
The 20 Million Miles to Earth: 50th Anniversary Edition contains extensive new bonus features including audio commentaries by Ray Harryhausen, visual effects artists Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett; featurettes such as Remembering 20 Million Miles to Earth, with Harryhausen and others discussing the film’s production and influence; The Colorization Process, a look at Legend Films work; Interview with Joan Taylor; Tim Burton Sits Down with Ray Harryhausen; David Schecter on Film Music’s Unsung Hero; plus a video montage of the film’s marketing and advertising materials by producer Arnold Kunert; and video photo galleries.

Though special effects techniques today have been dramatically transformed by CGI, Ray Harryhausen’s highly imaginative and incredibly detailed work continues to hold audiences spellbound today. A disciple of stop-motion pioneer Willis O’Brien (King Kong), Harryhausen adapted O’Brien’s techniques. O’Brien developed and created his own genre of film from the 1950s to the 1980s utilizing his stop-motion process (eventually identified as “Dynamation”). His memorable films include The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953), It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955), The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), One Million Years, B.C. (1966), The Valley of Gwangi (1969), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974), and Clash of the Titans (1981). His amazing body of work continues to inspire many of today’s special effects wizards.

Re: SPHE Press Release: Ray Harryhausen In Color Gift Cet

L-A-M-E

So what's the edge on this new set versus Sony's previous Fantastic Films of Ray Harryhausen collections released a few years back, aside from colorized versions?

Some of the extras sound interesting, but it seems the most significant ones (the featurettes and making-ofs from the previous sets) are completely left off in favor of new interviews with Tim Burton. And only three films on top of that... Why not do it properly?

The focus of this set seems to be the fact that they are selling colorized transfers... the box is even called "In Color".

A big pass for me. The previous sets were just fine and while some of the extras sound like they might be nice to have and I would love to hear the commentary tracks, the fact that they've not bothered to include the previous features and are only selling these three films (forcing double-dips upon us without offering definitive replacements) is not enough. I'll stick with what I've got for now. But I am interested in seeing upcoming reviews of the transfers for this...

Re: SPHE Press Release: Ray Harryhausen In Color Gift Cet

Well, Harryhausen commentaries have to be worth something. I still have the Criterion laser disc of JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS that contains his very first commentary track. I am hoping that he has already recorded a commentary for a 50th Anniversary edition of 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD for next year...

Re: SPHE Press Release: Ray Harryhausen In Color Gift Cet

It's like some bizarre form of deja-vu: once again colorizing movies is being treated as acceptable. Feels like the 80's all over again!

But I guess if the filmmaker wants them colorized it's their perogative. Still doesn't sound right though, but then again in this age of Lucas and his revisionist approach to filmmaking anything goes. =/

Re: SPHE Press Release: Ray Harryhausen In Color Gift Cet

I might pick up Earth vs the Flying Saucers if it's available separately, but I never really cared for 20,000,000 Miles to Earth, and It Came from Beneath the Sea is really a minor work not needing the 2-disc treatment. Now if they were to do this for the Sinbad films, Mysterious Island, and Jason & the Argonaut, I'd gladly double dip.

7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD might get a 50th Anniversary treatment next year... at least I hope so, and that Harryhausen has already recorded a commentary for it. The man is not getting younger. I want to see a gorgeous, vibrant new transfer of this, as it remains my all-time favorite fantasy film (having been blown away by it at age 8 in 1958).
