Re: Mannix is coming!

Which were the standout episodes from the second season of Mannix and were there many changes to the main cast title sequence (apart from the addition of Peggy Fisher)?

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Mannix: The Second Season
Mannix - The First Season
Mannix: Fourth Season

Re: Mannix is coming!

Definitely something to be concerned about if one is a big MANNIX fan. I just hope we don't get the wholesale changes like we did with THE FUGITIVE and MY THREE SONS (two "holy grail" shows for me). I guess it's possible they are talking about some specific song/songs used in an episode or two. Who knows at this point...

Re: Mannix is coming!

Given that that's the exact same language (and font size and location) used on My Three Sons S1V1, this does not give me a good feeling.

Re: Mannix is coming!

Well I was not planning on pre ordering this set or really any classic tv set these days until it professionally reviewed. If there the whole sale sodomy of the sound track of the set like fugitive s1 v2 I'll pass on it . If its a song here and threre is changed and vast majority of Lalo schfrins score remain I will buy it off best buy online and instore pickup (did that for five-0 s5). Im holding off for the reviews before I buy mannix s2.

Re: Mannix is coming!

I'm hoping this is just one of those CYA notices that CBS/Paramount puts on their TV-on-DVD releases. It really would be strange considering that in addition to the original theme and background music, the season 1 release also contained unaltered music performances from Neil Diamond and The Buffalo Springfield. On the other hand, CBS/Paramount could be pulling another "Fugitive" on us with this season 2 release. We'll just have to wait and see.

As I read elsewhere, there's a big difference between this and The Fugitive - Mannix never used any library music at all - so they own the music outright, unless, as others have posited, it's about a song replacement where they couldn't clear the publishing.

Which I think was the case with hawaii five-0 too, but I'm still going to wait for the reviews to be on the safe side , most of the time you really dont miss much of price break with the best buy instore pickup the week of release, just to be sure.

Looks like everything's a-ok with the music on the upcoming "Mannix" release:

Re: Mannix is coming!

You were quick posting that! It's only just been put on the website!

This news is great relief. I had considered cancelling my pre-order.

However, sadly with there being no extras at all this second season set has followed the rule with other TV shows. A lot of effort is put into extras for the first season set and none for the second season. Could they only get Mike Connors in to do episode intros for season 1 only?

Re: Mannix is coming!

At least this time, CBS got out in front of the release date and eased fears about potential music changes, though one wonders why a disclaimer about music being "changed for this home entertainment version" is really needed on the package at all if, indeed, none of the music is actually changing.

Re: Mannix is coming!

Oh. So they can respond promptly when they want to.

Re: Mannix is coming!

long as a show didn't dip into the Capitol library, the score shouldn't be retooled.

I'm sure cbs wont admit it but the fugitive stink has more than likely hurt there pre release orders of their classic tv dvd set(hmmm maybe Five-0 s5 pre release orders were off...?) I think a lot of people are taking a wait and see stance classic tv dvd set after the fugitive fiasco So to nip the damage for pre release sales in the bud on mannix s2 we see cbs do a double time reply on music score issues. thats my 2 cents

Re: Mannix is coming!

I agree with Bob - and I think that this flap couldn't have come at a more effective time.

With the tight economy I imagine that even CBS is paying attention to any possible disruption in sales now.

I'm not sure what that means for Fugitive fans, but it appears to be good news for Mannix fans.

Honestly after the Sh%t storm fugitive s1 v2 cause I honest can not see cbs releasing any more seasons till they can get the music score issues resolved or they may just drop it . But I do think series like Mannix, Hawaii five-0 , Mission Impossible, Canon (although the video was god awful bad ) etc... were cbs controls the music there going to leave it be, It makes zero sense (both common and dollars and cents) to mess with the scores to make the hardcore and serious fans not buy the sets.

Re: Mannix is coming!

More potential good news concerning the future of MANNIX on DVD: the "CBS/P Syndication Bible" website is now indicating that the first 6 seasons (out of 8 total) have been transferred to HD (previously only the first 3 seasons were transferred).

While this does not guarantee that they have plans to release at least 6 seasons, it does increase the potential of this happening. CBS/P is likely doing this work in preparation of utilizing this property for commercial purposes (either DVD sales or syndication).

Re: Mannix is coming!

Just picked up season two Mannix - watched the first episode, which was terrific - very clean transfer, color not quite as good as The Mod Squad, but it's fine. They explain away Intertect in about thirty seconds in the middle of the show. And yes, Lalo's great music is intact.

Actually I didnt mind they did not over tweak the color the on Mannix. The second season of wild wild west cbs went way over the top there and its almost hard to watch. s3 and s4 of WWW cbs didnt go so crazy they tone it down abit more like the (especially if you watch it 4:3) experance you would have had if you watch mannix live first run, clean, clear, colorful but not blinding color. And yes thank god Lalo's music is there it adds so much to the show.

Re: Mannix is coming!

The best color transfers I've ever seen on a TV show are the ones for The Mod Squad - exactly what color should look like. The Mannix transfers are fine, but a little tiny bit on the brown side. In the second episode, Gail Fisher actually goes to Intertect briefly. I guess they'll make an occasional reference to it, but boy does the show play better without all that tiresome interplay between Campanella and Connors.

Re: Mannix is coming!

Billy,

Thanks for the Mannix S2 info. It's probably my favorite cop/Detevtive 70's show. Although I liked getting S1 on DVD since it wasn't (or rarely) seen in syndication after original airings, I also preferred the "private-practice" seasons after the 1st one.

Bob S: Thanks for the WWW color info. I'm presently viewing S2 and I noticed early that the colors were....bright I have the entire series so it's good to hear about the color issue improving after S2.

Re: Mannix is coming!

When Mannix went 'out on his own', it became a more ordinary show (ala "Rockford") where it was unique before, but viewer taste differs of course. The 60s seemed to favor the idea of main characters belonging to an organization of sorts, "The Time Tunnel", etc.

Looking over the schedule from '68-'69, Mannix as solo P.I. was pretty exclusive to his territory. Rockford Files was still 6 years from hitting the air. So it's not that Mannix went to a safe/hot territory by leaving the company. If anything, Mannix launched the private investigator craze in the '70s.

When I interviewed Mike Connors, he said the writers really weren't sure how to incorporate the computer angle into the script. Who wants to watch mysteries solved by a series of punchcards?
