Father Knows Best- Good News!

I e-mailed Shout Factory to ask if they would ever consider releasing Father Knows Best on DVD.

Here is the reply I received today "Hello,
I'm pleased to inform you that we are currently in the process of releasing Father Knows Best. The first season will hit stores in early 2008. It's always nice to give someone good news. Thank you for your interest."

If this is accurate, we should all e-mail Shout Factory with words of encouragement to show our interest in the series! I sure hope it is correct.

Re: Father Knows Best- Good News!

Wow!!!!!!!!!!! That is the most amazing and exciting news I've heard in quite some time if it turns out to be true (not doubting MTO at all - I just don't want to get my hopes up and then have them dashed). I'm going to be extremely overjoyed if this pans out!!!!

Re: Father Knows Best- Good News!

Interesting - This is the 3rd Screen Gemes/Columbia Pictures Television show being released by an outfit other than Sony Home Video. ("Naked City" and "Route 66" being the other two.)

Re: Father Knows Best- Good News!

Let's hope that this pans out . . . might be good to ask the question on Shout's Community boards to see if someone there (possibly, Brian Ward) might be able to provide a little more in the way of details.

Let's also hope that Sony supplies Shout! with clean, full length transfers . . . I'm still reeling (a little) from Shout! using edited episodes of "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet."

Denny,

You took the post right out of my PC I hope that this trend continues. The only thing to cross our fingers on, is what Bob mentioned about the quality of the prints supplied to Shout! for future 50's-60's series.

Great news. I wonder why my reply from Shout was more or less a definite yes in early 2008 but the reply from Brian was less defiinite?

I think Brian was just trying to build suspense a bit. That's not even the wording I'm looking for. I guess since it's not been announced officially he just didn't want to come right out and give dates and all. But I'd say between your email and what he wrote on the Shout! board we have pretty much definitive news on this one. Now it's time for Gord and Dave to get some more details and make this one really official.

I dont have the courage to do it, but can somebody ask shout factory, if they would consider buying the rights to dennis the menace ?

I'd guess that it's due to the usual policies of most studios/suppliers to keep future releases close to the vest until distributing the announcements to the online sites like TSoD, and the Digital Bits, etc.

Ok, this one's for that guy in Fla that's causing the tremor on the Richter Scale that's felt as far west as Dallas

There's a party goin' on right here
A celebration to last throughout the years
So bring your good times, and your laughter too
We gonna celebrate your party with you

Come on now
Celebration
Let's all celebrate and have a good time
Celebration
We gonna celebrate and have a good time
It's time to come together
It's up to you, what's your pleasure
Everyone around the world
Come on!

Tony....man, that's telepathy I was thinking the exact thing about that series!

Maybe, maybe, this is a real start to an independent-release trend for more of these era's shows.

I'd love to see them acquire Donna Reed Show too.

Re: Father Knows Best- Good News!

I imagine most of us would like to see some of the other 50's classics released (Donna Reed Show, Dennis the Menace, Patty Duke, My 3 Sons, etc). But let's celebrate the good news before bemoaning the lack of other releases. At least that's going to be my attitude. This release, along with the "FUGITIVE" set and the recent news about the continuation of "RAWHIDE" really has me on a high and I'm not ready to come down this quickly.

Gary "I am blown away that Shout!Factory is going to release this series!!!" O.

Just post a request at the Shout! Factory community board; it's really no big deal as you can see from the response that Gary received (and is as easy to post there as it is here). Just be sure to put the name of the show in the subject so someone at SF will see it. You can pretty much assume if there's no response that it's not in the current pipeline. On the other hand, if they are considereing it, you'll probably get a response like Gary did . . . . . .

Great, Tony! I hope that you get a positive response to "Dennis the Menace." At a minimum, it'll tell Shout! Factory that there's interest in the series.

Re: Father Knows Best- Good News!

The question I have is this show fully owned by Sony/Columbia or are the video rights controled by the producers of the shows - Robert Young's own production company, "Rodney-Young Productions".

If I had to guess I would think it's controlled by the Rodney-Young estate. I think Columbia only had the syndication rights to it. Just a hunch. And speaking of Donna Reed, I believe her estate has some if not all rights to that series.

Re: Father Knows Best- Good News!

I'm part of the "Happy, But Never Entirely Happy" contingent.

I do suspect that Sony doesn't have the home video rights to FKB. But I still would like to see Shout pester Sony for the rights to "Dennis the Menace" and those four color seasons of "Hazel" that haven't been released.

Anyway, this is great news and if it doesn't become a reality I'm going to go into a funk.

Re: Father Knows Best- Good News!

I just had a bad flashback. FKB was cut for syndication (I think about 20 years ago), and not just cut but re-edited in a more "modern" way, with the fade-outs and dissolves changed to jump cuts.

If Shout ends up with those things, my joy will turn to bitter disappointment. Please, Shout people, if you're reading this forum: Try to get the original, uncut prints of these shows, and if they tell you that's what you've got, verify it and be sure before you go to the time and expense of putting them on DVDs.

Let's not have another Real McCoys, Mama's Family, Make Room for Daddy situation here.

No doubt that amidst my jubilation today that this very thought has tempered my enthusiasm a tad. We really must encourage Shout! to check what they are given and make sure it's the right stuff (uncut). We just can't have syndicated cuts for this show.

Re: Father Knows Best- Good News!

I might have to pick it up to balance out the first season of Hazel.

if you want to check out the young Robert Young, pick up Charlie Chan Vol 3 with the Black Camel - Robert Young meets Bela Lugosi.

That's a legitimate concern, and it was Shout! Factory that issued edited, syndicated episodes for their official release of "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet." I posted an inquiry a while back about this on one of Shout!'s community boards asking for an explanation, but no one from Shout! ever responded. I can only surmise that Shout! simply used what was provided to them by the surviving members of the Nelson family. Fair enough, but one wonders what other steps Shout! could have taken to secure clean looking, full length episodes, especially as a number of the same episodes on Shout!'s collection appeared in full length versions on Mill Creek's "public domain" collections (38 and 100 episodes) that were released around the same time.

Re: Father Knows Best- Good News!

This is the best news I've heard in a long, long time! Glad to see I'm not the only one who loves FKB. (And the fact that it hasn't been syndicated much in quite awhile should HELP the DVD sales, IMHO).

Please, please: Implore the folks at Shout! to release unedited episodes. (Since Sony was considering releasing this a few years ago -- and had cleaned-up clips from various episodes on their Web site where you could vote -- the original elements to all the episodes should be available -- if Shout! will bother to get them. I'm hopeful.)

By the way: There's an urban myth that the next-to-last episode of FKB ("Not His Type") is "lost" and no one has it. Anyone know why this rumor persists? I have a (complete) VHS recording of this episode, from when my local UHF station in Dallas showed it regularly in the early '80s -- the episode is NOT lost.
