Deleted footage - Rosemary's Baby?

I do not know if this is urban legend or truthful and being this forum has many who know this type of stuff I figured I would throw it out there.

Years ago I remember reading that there were scenes filmed showing the baby in the crib at the end of "Rosemary's Baby" but the scenes were cut because they were to graphically disturbing for what really was a film that used suspense to really frighten not gore and shock. Were scenes shot and deleted?

Re: Deleted footage - Rosemary's Baby?

I always thought it looked like a normal baby, except for the demonic eyes which we got a brief closeup glimpse of in the film. If the overall appearance of the baby was horrific, Rosemary would have been shocked immediately upon seeing it. Instead she approaches it calmly and doesn't become shocked until she sees the eyes up close.

The baby was never shown in the film. It is urban legend stuff. There is just a subliminal flash of the devils eyes that were taken from the earlier dream scene.

In Whatever Happened to Rosemary's Baby (TV sequel) I think they showed his little hooves. No kidding.

Re: Deleted footage - Rosemary's Baby?

Polanski has stated that the baby was never filmed - it's all post-production sound effects. I'd like to see a comprehensive documentary on a future Rosemary SE. The same for The Tenant (Paramount also) and Macbeth (Sony).

That urban legend is old--I remember hearing it all the way back in the early 70s!

And it's much to this excellent film's credit that people who have seen the film actually say they recall seeing the baby's face; it's that effective.

I thought I remembered seeing a tail.

Re: Deleted footage - Rosemary's Baby?

Irrespective of any extra footage, I hope Paramount will give us a 40th Anniversary SE next year. The current DVD is one of their worst, and this film urgently needs remastering. I just hope Paramount haven't allowed the film elements to deteriorate, as was reportedly happening with The Godfather before the recently completed restoration.

Confused. Are we discussing the film itself or is this going to be DVD-related (two posts mention DVD-related issues)? This thread's location will depend on the answer.

To get us back on track, the baby is never revealed in Rosemary's Baby. In the made for TV sequel, I believe they showed something as a flashback.
