SDE: Dependent on source or display?

I've seen lots of posts on how the Screen Door Effect (SDE) is greatly reduced at 1080 than it is at 720. Is this referring to the display resolution or the source material?

If I have a 1080 display, will the SDE be greater if I am viewing broadcast TV or DVD as opposed to an HD broadcast, or is it only a concern if my display device tops out at 720?

I want to think that the "lines" are static and don't change in size when viewing a lower rez image - that the display just uses more pixels to display one "720" pixel. Or it could be the display "zooms" in on lower resolution sources. I just don't know.

Thanks!

At the same seating distance, 1080p will have the least SDE, 720p second least, then 480p the most. It's due to the resolution of the projector.
