I'm not there - Todd Haynes' Dylan biopic

I couldn't find a thread for this in a search, possibly due to the title using bad/generic search words. If there is one then link it here and I'll kill this thread.

Anyway, since it just got Blanchett a Venice festival award for actress I figured it was worth discussing. I hadn't realized it was on the radar but after finding out more about it I'm pretty interested. There's a clip of one of Cate's scenes as Dylan out on YouTube, plus the trailer (which is far less helpful in gauging the film). It's obviously an ambitious film and very arty, perhaps not for everyone's tastes, but the idea of multiple actors all playing the same character is interesting and more so when you look at the widely varying list of actors in the role.

Some of it is "stages of his life" but I also get the impression that it's meant to show Dylan as a common man, as an anyman figure. Perhaps that's not the case, I don't know having not seen it yet.

Has anyone seen it? Is this getting into LA/NY in time to get Cate on the actress Oscar list?

All of the early reviews I'm reading say Cate Blanchett is the best of the 5 actors playing Dylan. She's pretty convincing in the clip that's going around.

She may be competing with herself in the awards derby. She'll be pushed for Elizabeth: The Golden Age as well.

Nov 21 is the wide release, but it hits NY Oct 4th for their film festival. Also apparently opening in London in a few days. So maybe we'll start seeing some feedback on this film.

You're right Craig, Cate could be up against herself this year. You know her career is starting to get pretty full of award nominated roles...Scandal, Veronica Guerin, Bandits, Elizabeth, Aviator, Charlotte Gray, LOTR trilogy, even a BAFTA nom for Ripley, as well as notice for several other films from smaller groups.

For all the buzz around other actresses it's Cate that appears to be most turning into the "next Streep". I think she's on the cusp of getting that recognition in the mainstream and this fall could be what pushes it over.

- what I mean is where people popularly use her as the standard for great acting, such as "she's almost as good as Blachett"...much like I just did with Streep.

I agree this looks terrific. Blanchett is unstoppable- like Foster, one of the few actresses whose film I will see regardless. This looks to be pretty volatile in trems of reaction- daring choices by Haynes, beyond just the visuals- having Dylan as a child played by an 11-year old black boy, and depicting the transition to electric as Blanchett machine-gunning the crowd...! In any event, this sounds like a definite departure from the tired musician biopic formula. Has some great reviews too.

I wonder how the academy will feel about this.
