Time to upgrade the Denon 5800... what should I get?

Budget is $2500 or less.

The 5800 has served me well for almost 8 years now but it is starting to show its age. The latest problem is that when I play an HD DVD through my Toshiba A2 the receiver thinks the DD disc is DTS for some odd reason.

I would like to have the new HD audio support and 6.1 is a necessity. I also need the same or better amplification power that the 5800 provides. Mutli-zone is also a must.

Any opinions and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

*Note....I really don't want to spend 5k on seps. *

On a $2,500 budget you way want to consider a Denon AVR-3808CI, Pioneer Elite VSX-94TXH or Integra DTR-7.8. For a stand-alone receiver on a $2,500 budget it may prove difficult to find a receiver that can match the amplifer section of your old 5800, so I'd suggest purchasing two or more Outlaw 2200 Monoblocks to drive your front speakers.

Couldn't you buy a pre/pro and then use the amp section of your 5800 using the pre-ins?

Something like the Outlaw 990 might be a nice choice.

Chris,
I replaced my 5800 with the Denon 4308CI, but you might want to look at the 3808CI which basically does the same thing except a few extra features and flexibility. Then again, after reading your post once more, I would go with the 4308CI that you can probably pick up in your budget range. I believe Obi bought a 4308CI too.

When you connect your HD DVD player with the optical connection, it ouputs the sound as 1.5 Mbps DTS. This is normal for HD DVDs. You should get DD when using SD DVDs just fine.
