help installing volume controls

Hey there folks,

I need some help on installing some volume controls on our new construction home house audio. Our home was prewired for audio and I have already installed in most rooms pairs of B&W ccm 636's throughout the home. When I went to hook up the SpeakerCraft VST45 volume controls I became a little puzzled as to how to make the proper connections.

When I pull off the wall plate it exposes 4 speaker wire bundles. Two contain the red-black wires which I'm sure are to go to the speakers. Then there is one bundle that contains a red-black-white-green wires. These I assume are the input wires for the amplifier? But then there is the fourth bundle which has very fine gauge braided wires that are green-brown-orange-blue. Each braid has two wires of that shade (i.e., dark green and light green). What am I to do with these wires??

Thanks for your help!!

Shouldn’t be too hard. What wires were in the ceiling or wall where you installed the B&Ws - the red/black or the red/white/black/green? Same at the amplifier location - red/black or the red/white/black/green?

That would be Cat 5 wiring, which should also go back to the amp location. It would be used for an in-wall controller that allowed you to select input source, change radio stations, etc. You wouldn’t need that wiring if you’re using that particular Speaker Craft volume controller; but it’s nice to have it in place “just in case.” E.g, if you ever upgraded to a more sophisticated whole-house system.
