I'm getting ready to purchase my first entry level home theater receiver on a budget. I need help deciding between the Sony STRDG510 or Pioneer VSX-517-K. Both are on sale at Best Buy for less than $200, but I don't know which one to get. I have a plasma tv, old DVD player and Polk RM6750 speakers with sub. I'd like to hook everything up with surround sound. Any idea which one is the best for the price?

Re: Sony STRDG510 or Pioneer VSX-517-K ???
Personally, if I had $200 to spend, I'd look at the used gear. Check your local Craigslist, Audiogon.com, etc.I had the 516, the predecessor to the 517. It had some noise on the channels that could be heard on the speakers when no material was being played.
Back to used gear. I recently sold a used Denon AVR-2800 locally for $70. It had a small dent on left rear corner due to shipping damage. This wasn't visible when the receiver was installed in a cabinet. But, a great buy none-the-less.

I have a Pioneer 514 & 815. Both sound great, especially on movies. Neither receiver has any noise whether it is on or not. If you have a low budget and want great sound for movies I would go with the pioneer.
