i'm having an odd internet connection problem that i'm hoping someone could help me with. for some reason, my computer will intermittently not open webpages when i either click on links or open bookmarks. if i refresh, sometimes it will open, sometimes i need to hit refresh again before the page opens. i'm using internet explorer 7, but the same problems occurs in firefox. i've tried resetting my cable modem and router and still the problem persists. anybody have any ideas?

fyi:

my computer is a P4 3.06 with 1.5GB of ram. i'm running XP SP2. i've done a virus scan with AVG and no problems were noted.

Do the problems happen consistently over a short period of time or does a hard refresh take care of it? Do you use filesharing programs where a lot of connections might be open at once?

Re: internet connection problem - help please

One possible reason could be if your upload bandwidth is being saturated with traffic. A Bittorrent client for instance can easily upload enough to saturate the line.

Since TCP traffic is bidirectional, what happens then is that the stuff coming to you down the line (such as web pages you are viewing) can't send acknowledgments up the saturated upload line - so the web server stops sending more traffic.

Unfortunately, since you are on cable, it is entirely possible it is your neighbours doing the saturating. On cable, you share bandwidth with a lot of others. The only way to figure that out is to talk to the cable provider, and how helpful they'll be I don't know. This is one big advantage to DSL - you get a dedicated connection to your ISP. Their lines may still be saturated, but at least your neighbours can't hog your line to the ISP as they can with cable.

they pretty much happen at irregular intervals throughout an entire span of browsing. sometimes things load on the first click and sometimes they don't. if i refresh, they may load, they may not. i may need to refresh two or three times before the link will load. closing the browser and reopening has 0 effect.

i don't use any type of filesharing.

It sounds like what Kimmo has suggested, then.

The reason I asked was because you are using a router. I do you file transfer programs where I can have hundreds of connections running simultaneously. When things got pushed too far, the router would become to overwhelmed to handle the DNS on its own. Redirecting the TCI/IP for the connections to third-party DNS servers took care of my problem. But when the DNS went out, the web wouldn't work until I reset the router not sporatically like you're describing.

Does it happen to all sites equally or just certain sites routinely? Some websites take forever to/inconsistently load.

Did you try unplugging from your router and plugging directly into your cable modem? If the problem goes away, you might want to look at replacing your routers. If it persists, you know it's not the router.

Have you tried testing other computers on your network? If they experience the same problem and the router checks out, you might try exchanging your cable modem with your cable company. I know I've had modems from both Time Warner and Comcast that shit the bed. The failure was more consistent than you're describing, though. If the other computer gets a steady connection, that you might take a look at the settings on your computer, check for viruses etc.

Of course, if checking all of that fails to isolate the problem, it could just be — as Kimmo suggested — an oversaturated network. Maybe look into DSL or FiOS.

EDIT: misspoke; replacement words in bold

Re: internet connection problem - help please

it happens to pretty much any website i try to go to. i'll try connecting my modem directly to my computer to see if there is any issue.

i don't have another computer on my network. i use the router to connect my slim devices squeezebox 3 in my living room to my music files on my hard drive.

Re: internet connection problem - help please

Yeah, eliminating the router is definitely a good way to zero in on the problem. If you still have issues without it (I do hope you're running a software firewall on your computer and are patched to the very latest security patches for Windows before hooking the computer directly to the Internet!) then it would seem probable it is the connection itself.

Certainly you should call the support at your ISP as well and ask them if they can assist - and if DSL or FIOS is an option, as Adam says, that may be something you might want to consider. Neither of those is problem free either, obviously, but they are better tech and if they work as they are supposed to either should work better than cable.

Re: internet connection problem - help please

If none of the troubleshooting steps works, try disabling any file sharing programs. They will tend to steal all of your upload bandwidth if you don't manually throttle the upload speed and then you aren't able to send out web requests which behaves like you're having download issues.
