Re: Survivor: China (Survivor #15) Discussion Thread

On a slightly different note, with the new three person finals, anyone know what would have happened if there was a TIE in the very last vote for the winner?

Re: Survivor: China (Survivor #15) Discussion Thread

I don't think we'd know until it happens.

Even Denise (in another of her reunion show ramblings) mentioned both fire-building and colored-rock-picking in the same breath when asked about a possible tie between Eric and Todd.

It seems as if they keep those things close to the vest.

Re: Survivor: China (Survivor #15) Discussion Thread

They couldn't re-vote between the 2 remaining contestants due to too much knowledge (from the episodes and discussion), so it might just come down to some physical/mental competition, which sort of kills the social aspect of the final denouement of the show.

She's probably right though for the standard tribal votes. We've seen the purple rock thing and the fire challenges in the past, but those weren't the absolute FINAL votes revealed on the reunion show for the million dollars.

That would have been really weird if it ended in a tie and they had re-vote or something. I couldn't imagine them doing a fire-building type challenge for the difference of $900k, but as Patrick said, the jury has then seen too much behind the curtain of each person's game play throughout the season so you'd think a re-vote would be out as well.

That would be interesting to say the least...

Oh, I'm sorry Mike. I mis-read your question. And a good one it is.

Perhaps they would have let the 3rd place person (Amanda) cast the deciding vote.

I suppose they could have Rupert standing by to pick the winner in the event of a tie!

I don't know why I find Rupert to be a good punchline for every Survivor joke/situation...but I do!

Re: Survivor: China (Survivor #15) Discussion Thread

That would be too much pressure for a 3rd place finisher to cast the "final" vote (and again, that person would have too much knowledge after seeing the episodes to not let personal feelings affect their vote constructively). That said, perhaps they just divide the pot up $550,000 for each of the remaining 2 contestants, but even that leaves a bad taste for a finale (becoming The SOLE Survivor is the name of the game, after all). I had thought they would have done away with 3-person finals because of the possibility of a tie vote amongst 2 people.

Re: Survivor: China (Survivor #15) Discussion Thread

Well, Jeff probably reads the votes right away, which gives them more than enough latitude in case of a tie.

I'm still surprised they didn't find a way to reward that $100,000 prize to Rupert somehow
I thought Rupert won the most popular contestant $100K prize during his season. Didn't he?

Wow, that's an interesting idea and I like it.
Never thought of that.

During the LIVE reunion show, they could maybe have just the two finalists each get a chance after the commercial break to make a FINAL speech to the sway that 3rd place person into selecting them. That would make for some great live TV. Honestly, if it took place this year, I could have seen Amanda going either way if Todd came up with a great speech.

However, it would also cut into the Reunion show though too, so if we ever see a future survivor reunion show that is 1 1/2 hrs instead of the standard hour, then we probably know why..since the producers would have months ahead of time to pre-read the votes and know there's a tie.

It was a million bucks, actually! And it was during the All-Stars season.

I always figured...and I'm sure I'm being cynical...that the producers knew what they had with Rupert by way of popularity...and when they knew he didn't win All-Stars (which came on the heels of his loss in Pearl Islands) they came up with the scheme for the audience vote for most popular survivor.

And then, cynical guy that I am, I figured they did the same with James.

I'm sure it didn't really go down that way.

Here is what I would do if I was running Survivor. First, you would need to check for a tie before finishing filming. If you discover there is a 3:3:1 tie for first place, you go to the jury and tell them there is a tie, but don't tell them who the two tied parties are. You then get them to vote again on the basis that you eliminate third-place. Since you don't tell them who is eliminated, they have to vote three times again - "If Amanda is eliminated, I vote for Todd. If Courtney is eliminated, I vote for Todd. If Todd is eliminated, I vote for Amanda." The you discard the irrelevant votes, and you have your result. Could be complicated to present to the audience, but would certainly be best for getting a result uncontaminated by a jury that has watched the show before having the final tiebreak vote.

Re: Survivor: China (Survivor #15) Discussion Thread

To make it less confusing, I'd actually just eliminate the lowest vote getter and then have the jury revote. Then there would be no tie.

Whatever it is, I'm sure the producers have a tie breaker in place or they would never have gone to the final 3 format.

Personally, I dislike a final three -- I think they may have done that to make it more likely that a stronger player makes it to the finals, but in reality, it just makes it just as likely that the stronger players are voted off earlier and a useless player makes it to the finals.

Re: Survivor: China (Survivor #15) Discussion Thread

The way I would run things for a tie, and perhaps it was done this way, is that after the jury votes, ask each of the final three to approach the voting booth, and cast a vote for either of the two other finalists as a tie breaker, and stick it in an envelope. This envelope would only be opened in the event of a 3-3-1 tie, and it is made clear that each of the final three does this so no clues are dropped as to what the final vote is.

This works with a jury of 7, but in a jury of 9 as in Cook Islands there remains the possibility of 3-3-3. Not sure what you do then...
