Some of you have become familiar with our recent HTF TOP TEN CHALLENGES (first with American Idol and currently with BIG BROTHER 8). If all of this is new to you, you might want to check out the BB8 Top Ten Challenge here for details.

We are announcing our first try at a HTF Top Ten Challenge for Survivor: China which debuts on Thurday, September 20, 2007 at 8:00 pm EDT. Here's how it works in a nutshell. There are supposedly 16 entrants listed at the Official CBS Survivor:China site. Their names are:

Aaron OUT #12
Amanda OUT #03
Ashley OUT #15
Chicken OUT #16
Courtney OUT #02
Dave OUT #13
Denise OUT #04
Erik OUT #06
Frosti OUT #08
Jaime OUT #10
James OUT #07
Jean-Robert OUT #09
Leslie OUT #14
Peih-Gee OUT #05
Sherea OUT #11
Todd #01 THE WINNER!

Instead of asking you to pick "blindly" (and assuming that CBS doesn't pull some tricks like adding entrants or having an early double elimination) here's what we will do.

When the number of contestants is whittled down to 14 entries will officially open. At that time you will be asked to submit a list of your top ten entrants (out of a pool of 14 possibilities.) Entries will close before the show when the third contestant is eliminated (before 8pm EDT on October 4, 2007).

Borrowing a page from the Big Brother 8 challenge, here are the more formal rules:
  • Only ONE entry per member.
  • List your top ten in numerical order (1-10). Please use the names as listed on the roster above.
  • Your list must be unique. No duplicate lists allowed. For duplicate lists, first submission gets that list.
  • Once you submit a list, it is FINAL. No edited lists are allowed (unless your original list is invalid due to a mistake or a duplication.)
  • Scoring is as follows: You are assigned 1 point for each position that your prediction is away from the final position of each contestant. For example, if you predict a contestant to come in 3rd and he or she comes in 7th you get 4 points. If that contestant comes in 12th you get 9 points. A 2nd place finish gets you 1 point. And so forth.
  • Lowest total points wins (with a score of 0 points being the best possible score.)
  • In the event of a tie the contest winner will be the entrant who was the fewest spots away from picking the winner. If it's still a tie, then we'll move down the list and determine who was closest to predicting the second spot, and so on, until the tie is eventually broken.
Entries close at 8:00p.m. EDT on Thursday, October 4, 2007. No exceptions please.

Here are a couple of words of explanation regarding this particular contest and the rationale behind the setup.
  • Since there are, according to the Survivor:China web site, sixteen entrants and you are picking a top ten there will be some contestants that you will not be picking. This will not change the scoring as indicated above. You choose only ten contestants and some might not even make it to the top ten (which adds a bit more of a challenge to the contest.)
  • Survivor, as many of these reality shows, is known for its unpredictability so it is quite possible that an ousted "survivor" might return. This past season on American Idol 6 two contestants were voted off the same night so instead of a "5th" and "6th" position we decided to assign two "5.5" positions for the purposes of scoring. That's why the rules clearly specify the "final" position of ouster for each contestant. It's not over until it's over, and who knows what twists this season will bring? And if there are unforeseen circumstances we will make a determination that will be fair to all entrants as much as possible. (Otherwise we will return your entry fee ).
  • We all know that the descriptions provided by web sites are often misleading (sometimes intentionally I often suspect to make the show more intriguing) and that there is no substitute for actually seeing the house guests and listening to what comes out of their mouths. That's why I provide a bit of a preview period and the deadline won't be until the first two "survivors" are eliminated. In other words, you get to see who the contestants are and have to select ten out of 14 remaining after Week #2. This also lets us see if there are some special situations that we must take into account before making our final choices.
There are probably other things that I haven't thought of but we can deal with them as the show progresses. The one thing that I ask of all entrants (other than making sure that their list is unique) is that you follow the following format when submitting your entry:

01. Survivor
02. Survivor
03. Survivor
04. Survivor
05. Survivor
06. Survivor
07. Survivor
08. Survivor
09. Survivor
10. Survivor

This will help me when I set up the spreadsheet to monitor the scoring.

Remember that you are free to start submitting your unique list anytime you want. However, realize that once submitted, it's final (unless someone else submitted the same list chronologically before you.) And it just makes sense to wait until after the September 27, 2007 show since you will know who the "final 14" are. If you jump the gun and submit a list with someone who's voted off first or second (in the 16th or 15th position) then you are stuck with that choice. It is to your advantage to wait until the final 14 are chosen.

Finally, in order to get some idea of how many people are interested in participating in this contest I am asking you to insert a "place holder" in this thread for now as a courtesy. This is for tabulation purposes only and doesn't mean that you get to choose first. It's still "first list submitted" in the case of duplicate lists.

Thank you, and let the games begin! (on September 27th)

And for those of you who have taken the trouble to read through this entire message (and who have "survived" it!) here's a bit of "inside" information: We have been able to make an arrangement to offer the winner of this contest a prize that should make a victory a bit sweeter than just HTF bragging rights. While the exact prize for the winner is yet to be determined let's just say that it involves some HD media. The exact titles will be announced near the close of the contest because we are looking to provide some of the latest releases. Maybe even a surprise or two! As they say, "Film at eleven!"

Incidentally, HTF moderators and their friends, yada yada yada, will not be eligible for prizes so that leaves Patrick and myself at this point only in it for the honor and glory, not the discs. If Patrick wins (again!) then we move down to the first eligible entrant as the prize winner. Also, I'm being a little secretive about this prize because we want only the true Survivor:China HTF fan to enter and not clog the airways with superfluous entries. If you are reading this, you are probably an HTF "regular."

** Entry Disqualified (Erik listed twice) **

Note: Sorry that you weren't able to get your entry in on time. It wouldn't be fair to other potential entrants to allow exceptions to the rules. I trust that you understand. There's always next time.

**UPDATE** After thinking this over, and seeing the time stamp in your edited message as being "8:11pm" on 10/4/07 I decided to allow your entry. As I watched the episode where Leslie was voted off I realized that 10 minutes into the program there was no indication that she would be leaving. Since the point of closing entries by the beginning of the show was to avoid late entrants having any unfair advantage and since the direction the episode was taking was not clear 10 minutes in I've decided to allow your entry in the spirit of "it's only a game." Obviously, had circumstances indicated that Leslie was going to be eliminated early on then my original decision would have prevailed. As soon as word gets out that there will be a prize given out to the winner of these contests I suspect that future HTF Top Ten Challenges may be a little more popular and a stricter interpretation of the rules with less flexibility may be in order at that time. As you are a returning participant here I felt that extending you the courtesy of allowing your entry was appropriate.

Welcome aboard, RyanAn!

The show hasn't even started yet and I want to already nominate Ashley as "most annoying". And that was from 5 seconds in a commercial...I don't see her making the long haul....

Maybe she will prove me wrong.

Re: The HTF Survivor:China Top 10 Challenge *** ENTRIES CLOSED ***

O.K. The deadline (8:00pm EDT on Thursday October 4, 2007) has passed and we have eleven (11) entries in this season's contest. Congratulations to adhering to the "you've got to be in it to win it" philosophy.

They are (in no particular order):

AnthonyC
Chris Morris
RAF
NYSandy
Jon B
phil-w
Patrick Sun
TonyD
mike caronia
Dheiner
RyanAn

Let the games begin. Remember, only eight of you are eligible for the special prize (HD media - titles to be determined) since moderators are ineligible for this. All we can compete for is the "glory" of finishing on top.

NOTE: Updated scores will be posted in the FIRST MESSAGE in this thread.

Good luck to all!

Actually Tony, as Yogi used to say, "It ain't over 'til it's over." While you started out slowly, this is a contest that is designed in such a way so that the early trailers catch up to the pack. For every spot that you picked wrong by not having the survivor in your top ten (which gives you an early deficit score) you have a position that gets 0 points when someone not on your list gets eliminated. Tonight was a perfect example. Both you and I didn't have Jaime in our top ten so our point totals didn't rise tonight. It all comes down to who we pick and where we pick them.

Speaking of which, Dheiner continues to lead with only 05 points so far. (He was only penalized 1 point for his Jaime selection.) Second is currently held by myself and NYSandy. But it's clearly anybody's race at this point because of the structure of the contest.

This had to be one of the funniest episodes in a long time with the "hidden immunity idol OOPS!" by Jaime. She had absolutely no clue and her closing remarks during the credits proved that for me. They couldn't have scripted it any better.

Dheiner holds on to first place with a most impressive score of 05. He's the only contestant with all eight people still on his list. Now it all comes down to order of elimination to see if some of the others in the low teens can catch up with him.
Stay tuned....

Yes, Mike, Dhenier continues to impress! Not only does he have all remaining seven players "alive" but he nailed Frosti's demise right on the money to keep his leading total at 5 points. I took a major hit last night as my #1 pick went down for the count.

Tied for second place at 18 points are NYSandy and RyanAn but that 13 point differential is looking larger and larger - especially if Dhenier keeps hitting his picks right on the money. Both contenders have six spots still open but are guaranteed to pick up some points (a bad thing) since a couple of those spots are in the 8-10 slots.

I love how this contest dynamic changes from week to week. It all comes down to the order of finsih for the selections. Stay tuned...

Re: The HTF Survivor:China Top 10 Challenge *** Follow your progress here ***

Congratulations to Dheiner who continues to impress with his amazing accuracy in this contest. His pick of James at #07 marks the second time in a row that he has hit the nail right on the head. And unless I'm mistaken (the math whizzes can verify this or contradict it for me) Dheiner's worst case scenario possible score from this point on is to pick up an additional 15 points (5+4+3+2+1) for a grand total 20 points. That leaves only NYSandy, with a current score of 18 points with the only shot at winning this contest instead of the current leader. And that would assume a perfect performance from this point on which is highly unlikely.

While it might be premature to congratulate the probable winner this might actually be over as early as next week so stay tuned for more results....

Since I do not have, nor do I expect to get any time soon, any high definition DVD player, I'd like to restore the excitement in this contest by removing myself from eligibility for the prize.

Re: The HTF Survivor:China Top 10 Challenge *** Follow your progress here ***

Most gracious, John! That will make the race even more interesting since you have obviously blown away the field at this point with your performance. Of course, you retain all bragging rights if (actually, when) you officially win!

I wasn't going to mention this until the results were official, but in addition to myself, Patrick Sun and yourself not getting the prize I'm eliminating NYSandy from eligibility for a prize as well. She's my "significant other" and, as such, would fall under the category of "Moderators and their families" where prizes are concerned.

So, to the remaining entrants still eligible for the prize, there's still a lot of racing left. AnthonyC is the current "leader" at 21 with others close behind.

Re: The HTF Survivor:China Top 10 Challenge *** New Prize Eligibility Developments ***

Dheiner continues to amaze with his uncanny accuracy in this pool! After another perfect night he has officially been declared the winner since he cannot be caught no matter what happens from this point on.

Congratulations for a most impressive performance, John!

In other developments, the race for the prize (I should have an announcement soon as to which titles we will be including) has literally become a six person contest. With 4 people already not in the running for a prize (Dheiner declined the prize since he doesn't intend to get an HD-DVD player any time soon) it was discovered that RyanAn's entry is invalid because it lists Erik twice. That leaves us with 6 people still in the running and I have added that information to the first message in this thread. Right now, phil-w holds a very slim lead with only 8 points separating top from bottom.

Anything can happen. Who knows? Maybe mike caronia's prediction will come true and he'll be that last man standing!

Stay tuned as this contest winds down. The horses have reached the top of the stretch....
