I have some old car audio equipment that has been laying around for about a year and I want to try to take it and turn it into a nice home theater. it includes 3 subwoofers, 2 amplifiers, and a car cd player, and i have some old car speakers to, a few actually, various sizes. Is this possible? does anyone have a way of doing this, and willing to walk me through it? very much appreciated... thanks

Re: Trying to turn car audio into home audio
The biggest hurdle is powering the equipment. An AC to DC converter with enough amperage is VERY expensive. Add up the fuse ratings of all your amps, crossovers and HU. Let's say they equal 110 amps. That means you need a coverter that will put out 110 amps. Never seen one that big. I have seen some 50 amp models for around $300 to $400. You can go that small but you will need a bank of batteries to store the power. Don't forget that batteries have acid in them and most release explosive hydrogen gas.The second issue is subs. Most "car" subs are really just high Qts subs with a high Fs. They take advantage of a car's small cabin to reinforce the low notes. Put them in a large room and the bass disappears.
This question is asked all of the time and the answer is always the same. Sell your car stuff and use the proceeds to buy a proper home theater. In your case, the speakers and subs may be salvagable. Sell the amps, HU and other associated electronics. Build enclosures for the speaker and subs (we can help in the DIY section). Power them with a quality home receiver and sub amp.

Re: Trying to turn car audio into home audio
I’ve always wondered: Does anyone ever post on a car audio forum asking how they can get their leftover home stereo receiver to work in their car?
Regards,
Wayne

Yes. But with the car audio forums being populated by 14 to 16 year olds, it turns into a name calling fest and no real information is given out.-Robert
