Most fantasy football drafts are being held around now, so it's time to start our annual thread and keep the FF discussion out of the real NFL football discussion thread.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

We had our draft last night, and here's what I ended up with (1st pick in a 12 team league):

QB:Rivers, McNair, Culpepper
RB: LT, Portis, McAlister, Tatum Bell, Turner
WR: Fitzgerald, Cotchery, I. Bruce, Curry, Brandon Marshall, Crayton
TE: Heap
K: Gostkowski

I took a chance on Portis at 3.01, and felt very lucky to get Fitzgerald at 2.12 -- he was the last of the "stud" receivers on my list that was available. Harrison, Johnson, TO, Wayne, Smith and Holt were all gone, and the team in front of me took Roy Williams, to my delight. If Portis stays healthy, though, I should have two great RB's. My other choices were Edge (already had Fitz from the Cardinals) and Benson. Portis has more upside, IMO.

I didn't want to take Tatum Bell, but he was still there at 8.12, and the next best available RB was Leon Washington, so I had to take him (I hate drafting Lions).

I missed out on Ladell Betts to backup Portis, since he went way too early at 5.03, IMO. I was happy to see Michael Turner last until my 11.01 pick, though. His recent minor ankle injury scared off the vultures who usually take other team's handcuffs.

I'm not thrilled with my QB situation, but the QB run started early, and I got Rivers at the end of it, after Palmer, Brees, Brady, Bulger, McNabb were all gone. I decided to take Rivers at 5.01 (a little high), since only he, Romo and Roethlisberger were left on my list of QB's I wanted as a starter. None of them would have made it back to me at the 6.12/7.1 turn.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

My wife has a 10 person league, and I helped her draft, so I'll take credit. She had the third pick, and the league reversed BOTH the second and third rounds (she picked 2.08, 3.08, and 4.03). I was hoping the #2 pick would take LJ, but no such luck (I really, really, really, really, really, really wanted Stephen Jackson...I love that guy).

QBs (2): Losman (6th round), Cutler
RBs (4): LJ, Thomas Jones, Deangelo Williams, Rock Cartwright (my wife is a Skins fan )
WRs (4): Marvin Harrison, Larry Fitzgerald, Wes Welker, Lav Coles
TEs (2): Todd Heap, Jason Witten
K: Neil Rackers
DEF: Chargers

LJ allowed us to take a break on later RBs, so my wife stocked up on WRs. I saw that Losman ended the year strong last year, and has a rookie RB (awesome he may be). So she focused on top notch WRs to help out. We got Losman in the 6th. The gambles are on Thomas Jones and JP Losman. If they have good years, then we should do pretty well. I can't believe Witten was available as late as he was, and I have high hopes for Cutler. I pushed hard for Welker, and maybe we stretched to get him in the 9th. But I stand by the belief that Belicheck and Brady are going to LOVE the guy, so he might see high single digit TDs this year, plus a good chunk of yards. Both Moss and Donte Streetclothes will miss games.

If Losman can keep his **** together, and Jones can be a solid #2, I think it's a great draft.

Solid looking team Scott. You may lament Tatum Bell and your QB situation, but I am sure that L.T. salve will make you feel just fine !

Scott,
I guess you don't draft defense? Our leagues always made us do that. Your WR's are rather bland but the other parts are solid(if not stellar).

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

Rock Cartwright? Hopefully, you took him with your last pick, Chuck. You really should have used the roster spot for Michael Bennett to backup LJ. If the pick made your wife happy, though, I guess it's worth it.

Alex, I'm hoping that Tatum Bell will have a couple of good games early (since Kevin Jones is on the PUP and will miss at least the first 6 weeks). If he does, I figure I can trade him to one of the Lions slappies in our league for more value than the 8.12 pick used on him. The guy who took Ladell Betts is a prime candidate. He's my 4th RB, so he'll be on my bench until the bye weeks start.

Quote:
Scott,

Shane, we draft individual defensive players instead of a team defense. We start four players -- 1 DL, 1 LB, 1 DB and 1 flex (DL, LB or DB). My four players are:

DL: Terrell Suggs
LB: Tatupa, Cooper (Chargers)
DB: Tillman (Chicago)

I never draft backup defensive players, tight ends or kickers. When the bye weeks start, we can move up to 2 players on bye weeks to the IR slots and pickup backups off the waiver wire. I can always find a one week fill in at those positions on the waiver wire.

Yes, my wide receivers are not spectacular, but Fitz and Cotchery should produce well. We start one RB, one WR, one TE and three flex players (RB/WR/TE), so my starters will be:

QB: Rivers (may start Culpepper Week 1 vs. Detroit, though)
RB: LT
WR: Fitz
Flex1: Cotchery
Flex2: Portis
Flex3: McAlister, Bruce or Curry (depending on matchups)
TE: Heap

Bell, Marshall and Crayton are bye week and injury fill-ins, and Turner is just protection in case LT gets injured. So, I like my starting lineup options, and if Terry Glenn's knee keeps acting up, Crayton could be a sleeper. I used a late pick on him, so he didn't cost me much. Same with Culpepper -- he was my 19th pick in a 20 round draft.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

Ah good, I was waiting for this thread to start.

New year, big question...

Draft is tonight and I have the #3 position (LT & Jackson are 100% gone), who in the hell do I go with?!? Seriously this has been killing me for days now, I'm looking for opinions.

It's a typical league (14 team) and scoring is pretty normal which puts the emphasis on RB's in the first round (Manning is the usual exception down in 9-12th spot).

The four guys I'm looking at are LJ, Alexander, Gore and Addai (with Addai leading the way right now).

LJ - I know he's a stud back, but there are just too many issues with both the o-line and QB in KC right now. Not to mention wear and tear carrying for 400+ times.

Alexander - I didn't get to see him do much running in the pre-season and I'm just not sure he's back to normal yet. He's probably the most likely #2 out of my choices.

Gore - Is a great RB, but I have been killed by injuries before in this pool and he's known for them.

Addai - To me he seems to have the best upside. No one will stack the box against Indy and he will be running 80%+ of the carries. If he's anything like the young Edge they say he is that means anywhere up to 1500 yds and a good 12+ TD's.

Anyone have thoughts on this issue (anyone I'm missing).

Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, she did all of the drafting completely. I prepped her and helped her rank the positions and come up with the philosophy of the first few rounds. But she made the picks. I laughed at her when she told me she got Rock. I'll see who else is out there (maybe Bennett is) for that fourth spot. She's not married to the pick.

Does your league give points for receptions, Gary? Ours does, and QB's get 6 points for TD's. Here is what the first round looked like:

1. LT (me)
2. SJax
3. Manning (this owner loves Manning)
4. LJ
5. Gore
6. Bush
7. Westbrook
8. Addai
9. Parker
10. Rudi
11. T Henry
12. Alexander

If I was in the third spot, I probably would have taken LJ, but I wouldn't have felt great about it. It's tough to pass up on that type of possible production, though.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

Scott,

Yup, running and receiving nabs you +1 point per 20 yds. and bonuses (+3 pts.) at 100, 200 and 300 yds. TD's are worth 6 points for receiving and rushing.

QB's get 1pt. / 50 yds with bonuses (+3) at 300 & 450 yds. and 4 pts. for a TD pass.

So on average using last years stats LT managed and insanely high 20 pts. a game, while LJ had 15 (Manning, the highest QB was about 14 pts.). The average RB is usually 10-15 points for a #1 RB and 6-9 points for your #2 RB (guys like Reggie Bush, Thomas Jones, etc.).

It may just come down to a coin flip in the end, given I know LJ is an amazing RB, but I'm having trouble with the lack of support he has in KC.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

Gary,

We get a point per reception, as well as rushing/receiving yards points (1 point per 10 yards). So, in that situation, you can even make an argument for Westbrook or Bush at #3. I still think LJ is the safest pick for you, but I'm not real high on KC and his supporting cast, either, so I understand your concern. My take on the other options:

Addai -- too many options in the offense, and has not had to carry the full load in the past.

Gore -- Is he a one-year wonder? Has a long injury history.

Westbrook -- Seems to miss games every year.

Bush -- Shares the backfield with McAlister

Alexander -- Is he starting to hit that RB wall? Offensive line not as good as in his great years.

Parker -- Will offense change under new coaching staff? Can you really spend the #3 pick on him?

So, I still think LJ should go before all the above options. If you really do not like him though, my next choice would probably be Gore. That opinion may be slightly biased, though, since I have Gore in my dynasty league.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

LJ does get the call in the red zone. Hell, he gets the call all the way down the field.
I'd go with Gore at #4 over LJ.

Kevin Jones is not on the PUP. He may or may not actually play until week 7 or later, but they felt he was close enough to playing shape to keep him on the main roster so he could practice with the team. Deal Bell as early as possible.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

Shane, I like your receivers and starting QB. Your running backs are a little weak, though. It looks like you went for the all "running back by committee" team.

Kyle, both your teams are stacked! Nice job!

While we are posting teams, here's my dynasty team. It's been pretty awful the past couple of years (I made some mistakes during our startup draft regarding the salary cap). This is the first season I feel that I can actually be competitive:

QB: Rivers, Campbell, Schaub
RB: Gore, Benson, MBIII, TJones, Leon Washington, Lorenzo Booker
WR: TO, Driver, Braylon Edwards, Greg Jennings, Mark Clayton, Meecham, Jacoby Jones
K: Wilkins
DL: Jason Taylor
LB: Urlacher, Poszlusky, Patrick Willis
DB: Antoine Winfield

We do not play a tight end in the above league.

I do need to cut a wide receiver before the season starts in the above dynasty league to get to a legal roster. It's a toss-up between Meecham and Jacoby Jones. I'm leaning towards dumping Meecham (my 2nd round rookie / free agent draft pick), since Jones has looked much better in the preseason.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

Kyle,

How the heck did you get LT, Brees and Harrison ???? That seems stacked to me. Your first team seems stronger than your second team.

I posted this in another thread, but here goes again. I wont post this info after this coming weekend.
I created a NFL Pick 'Em league in Yahoo. Its free. No spread. No confidence points. Very Simple. Invite whomever you wish. Its just for fun.
Click here for the Yahoo Pick Em site
All you have to do is Join a private league.
The league # is 29026
The password is widescreen

2 of my leagues have drafted, here are my teams:

Home Theater II League:

QB: Peyton Manning, Rex Grossman
RB: Brian Westbrook, Deuce McAllister, Adrian Peterson, Julius Jones
WR: Larry Fitzgerald, Donte' Stallworth, Calvin Johnson, Greg Jennings, Bernard Berrian
TE: Jason Witten, Tony Scheffler
K: Neil Rackers
Def/ST: Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers

I had the 10/10 pick, and couldn't let Manning go through, even though I really wanted Brees. FWIW, Grossman was a late, late round garbage pick. My 2nd pick (11.1) was Westbrook.
This HTF league awards 0.6 PPR. We'll see.

Second league:

QB: Marc Bulger, Jon Kitna
RB: Frank Gore, Maurice Jones-Drew, Deuce McAllister, Tatum Bell, Vernand Morency
WR: Marques Colston, Reggie Brown, Drew Bennett, Greg Jennings, Bernard Berrian
TE: Jason Witten
K: Neil Rackers
Def/ST: Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals

I took Gore over LJ (and so did Mr. #4 pick, SA). I have more confidence in the 49ers O than I do the Chiefs. MoJo was on my teams last year. Waiver Wire pickup of the millenium ! I took 2 Saints because I think they'll score a lot. Same with Bulger (hopefully).

My main league drafts Wednesday night. I have 10/10 pick.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

Alex,

I see you are on the Jason Witten bandwagon. I was actually targeting him in my money league, but for some reason the tight ends went later than usual. I got to my 7th pick and Todd Heap was still there, and there were no receivers or RB's that looked good at the spot, so I took him. Only Gates and Gonzales were off the board at that point, and the TE run usually happens in the 5th/6th round in this league.

Our league uses the reverse draft order. So I was able to get LT with the first pick, then when it came back around I chose Brees and Harrison back to back.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

OK so I went with Addai. I know... I may pay for taking him that early, but I couldn't justify the others.

I think I faired well (in a 14 team league). I like my RB depth (especially now with Jones not on the PUP list - he was a late pick). It will make for some good trade fodder after my bye weeks.

QB - B. Roethlisberger, E. Manning
RB - J. Addai, D. McAllister, A. Green, K. Jones, A. Chatman
WR - T. Holt, D. Jackson, T. Glenn, B. Johnson
TE - T. Heap, G. Olsen
K - R. Gould
DST - Raiders, Packers

I rate my Defense as my worst position (although there is a little potential with the Raiders) and my QB's as 50/50 (they can be great, but both have had INT issues in the past).

Chatman was my last "sleeper" pick. He looked great in pre-season and I can see him stealing goal line carries from Brown if he has a slow start to the season.

If not, well there is always the waiver wire.

What's everyone's thoughts on Gonzalez on Indy. He's a rookie but taking Stokley's spot. I'm having second thoughts about Reggie Williams from Jax.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

I'm not that big on Gonzales in a re-draft league. Other than one or two seasons, Indy's third receiver has not been as productive as you might think. Also, rarely are rookie WR's very productive their first year (I know there are exceptions, such as Moss, Boldin and Colston). Even Reggie Wayne was less than stellar his rookie year with the Colts. Finally, if Dallas Clark is healthy, he will eat into the receptions of the 3rd receiver in that offense.

Now, in a dynasty league, I think Gonzales is worthy of a roster spot. Just do not expect much out of him this season.

Also, what's going on with Matt Jones? On Yahoo it says to not even draft him yet on NFL.com it has him listed as the #1 receiver.

I like Brandon Marshall, if he can stay healthy. He's supposed to replace Rod Smith as the #2 receiver in Denver. I drafted him as the 5th WR in my money league.

As for Matt Jones, can you say "bust"? I wouldn't waste a roster spot on him.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

So, how did everyone do in their first week?

In my case, I have a 33 point lead going into the two Monday Night games. My opponent has Carson Palmer, McGahee, Vernon Davis and Chris McAlister left. I have Fitzgerald, Todd Heap and Terrell Suggs remaining. So, the game is still in doubt -- which wouldn't have been the case if I'd left Ronald Curry in my lineup instead of starting Deuce McAllister. That move cost me 24 points.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

I need to readjust a few things since Terry Glenn is looking to be out for atleast 3-4 weeks if not the year.

I'm 34 points ahead making only a 5 point mistake not starting Lauverneous Coles. He has Baltimore's D, Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson tonight.

Well, I survived and won by 9 points with a less-than-inspiring first week effort from my team. More importantly, none of the rash of first week injuries hit my team, with the exception of my backup QB McNair (and I'm not sure if he'll miss any time). In each of the past two seasons, my money league team has been destroyed by injuries.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

Terrible first week from our team. We were saved by Lav Coles as our flex (we actually debated starting Deangelo Williams - hah!) and the SD defense.

Losman, LJ, and TJ combined to give us NINE points (or so). We sat Witten for Heap (and we won't do that again, not with Witten and Romo being best friends), we sat Welker, and Cutler outplayed Losman. If LJ sucks for us (looking more and more likely), we're going to get creamed. We have no depth at RB.

But it's a win...so far.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football 2007 Discussion Thread

Here are my starting dilemmas this week:

QB: Rivers @ New England or TGreen vs. Dallas?
Flex: Brandon Marshall vs. Oak, McAllister @ Tampa, Curry @ Den, Cotchery @ Balt. (pick two)

This is what I'm leaning towards:
QB: Green vs. Dallas
RB: Tomlinson @ NE
WR: Fitzgerald vs. Sea
Flex1: Portis @ Phi
Flex2: Cotchery @ Balt
Flex3: Marshall vs. Oak
TE: Heap vs. Jets

I'd really like to get McAllister in the lineup, though. I like his matchup this week at Tampa. However, I also like Marshall's matchup, and the Jets will have to throw on Baltimore (they certainly will not be able to run the ball), so I'm having a hard time benching Cotchery.

BTW, I also have Tatum Bell, Patrick Crayton and Isaac Bruce available for the flex spot, but am not really looking at them as options.

Opinions?

Quote:

I sat here for 2 mins and could not come up with a suggestion. Go Rivers. more weapons. maybe LT will get a pass in the flat and run wild (like he did in the playoff game last year).

Quote:
Flex: Brandon Marshall vs. Oak, McAllister @ Tampa, Curry @ Den, Cotchery @ Balt. (pick two)
McAllister vs Tampa. definitely. I choked on Lee Evans vs the Denver secondary last week, stay away. I guess Marshall.

I also have Bell and will sit him this week, but I am hoping that will turn out well later on.

My dilemmas this week, part 1:

Steelers D vs Buf or Packers D vs Giants and possibly Jared Lorenzon and no Brandon Jacobs. Both are favorable.
I've got two locks at RB (Alexander & Rudi Johnson)
For my 2 WRs and Flex (0.5 PPR league):
Marion Barber @ Miami
Julius Jones @ Miami
Lee Evans vs PIT
Larry Fitzgerald vs SEA
Reggie Brown vs WAS
Mike Furrey vs MIN (not real serious on that one)

So Fitzgerald is WR1 lock.
I guess Reggie Brown is my WR2.

For now, I am leaning towards Barber. But Jones will get a lot of carries. And if Evans gets thrown to alot...sheesh...

My dilemmas this week, part 2:

Kitna or Bulger ?

I dont know what ESPN's Hec & Vic are smoking. They predict the Bears D for 9 pts in their home opener vs KC. I am thinking...19. (we'll check back on this on Sunday afternoon).

My dilemmas this week, part 3:

2+2+flex (0.6 PPR) from this group:
Fitzgerald
Donte Stallworth
Westbrook
Adrian Peterson (MIN)
Deuce
Calvin Johnson
Julius Jones
Bernard Berrian
Curry
