Harmony 1000 and Lighting

Excuse my lack of knowledge but I'm new to home automation and home theaters. So heres my question(s). How do I make it possible to control my curtains and lighting with a remote control? I have not purchase the harmony 1000 yet, but am leaning toward it because I have heard it is easier to program than some other remote and it also looks pretty cool. If there is another remote that you think I should have a look at please let me know. Also, what equipment do I need to open my curtains and dim the lights?

Thanks very much,

Craig

Re: Harmony 1000 and Lighting

Craig,
If you are looking for home automation items like you mentioned a good place to start would be smarthome.com. Their store is all about home automation and they carry a lighting system called Insteon. I just bought all my light switches through them along with the necessary software needed to control the lights with the remote. I also bought the Harmony 1000 to do the exact same thing you are wanting to do minus the curtains. I do know that they carry motorized curtain rods but they can get pricey. One of the things that I like about the Insteon lights are, you can create multiple lighting scenes with the software that you can then macro into your remote. Say for instance you could have one scene for watching movies then if you need to pause the movie for intermission the lights would come up about half way automatically without hitting another button. Depending on how many different set of lights and switches that you are running, you can let your imagination run wild.

I am sending you a PM with some additional info.

Cheers,
JJ

Re: Harmony 1000 and Lighting

Thanks very much for pointing me in the right direction. It looks like I will be putting up the lighting in about 2 weeks.
