Menu navigation is much, much faster now. IMO, this is a much bigger leap in performance than that between the original firmware and 1.0.1. Traversing between menu levels is now instantaneous in almost all instances. The right-side graphic effects also feel like they kick in much faster - it no longer feels like they are slowing everything down. Basically, the Classic now feels as least as snappy as my old 5G 80GB video. The other big thing they fixed - Compilation grouping is back!! However, it's easily missed. It's no longer an On/Off toggle in the Settings menu. You have to turn the Compilations menu item on in the Music menu customization area. With this menu item showing, artists who appear only in compilations are filtered out of your main Artist list. Remove this menu item, and filter is turned off and ALL artists appear in the main Artist list. (Not, this menu item WAS in the previous firmwares but it had no effect on the Artist list.) Even though it's not as intuitive as it used to be I am extremely glad Apple restored this feature , as it reduces the number of artists I need to scroll through from over 2500 to around 500. Bottom line - this update makes the Classic what it should have been all along. If you own a Classic, get this update NOW! If you've been holding off due to the reports of performance problems, hold off no longer. I can now wholeheartedly recommend the iPod Classic to all who need the capacity. |
