New iPods Coming Next Week (9/5/07) - Page 5

Re: New iPods Coming Next Week (9/5/07)

I ended up getting the 160gb Classic. Ive loaded about 130gb of music. some songs in some albums wont play. Much like on iLounge, Ive tried removing, adding, nothing helped. I havent tried to re-rip, but I will, others already have and say it doesnt help though. Also, I have a few albums from different artists titled "B-Sides" when I scroll through the artist either in cover flow or the traditional method and pick their B-sides album, it basically treats them as compilations and shows all of my songs from every B-sides titled album no matter who the artist. I find this annoying as all hell. Im going to have to rename some of these albums, and possibly make new cover art for them. by the way, the menu's are a bit sluggish (not terrible) again after you load the iPod up Ive noticed.

Ugh, thanks for being my guinea pig Jean

Looks like I might be able to save some cash until after the holiday season. Hopefully we'll have a 16GB Nano or iPhone by then!

Re: New iPods Coming Next Week (9/5/07)

I've got about 100GB of music loaded on my 160GB Classic, and have not yet run into anything that won't play. Admittedly, I have only tried to play a fraction of what's out there.

Like Jean says, the treatment of compilations on the Classic is crap - for some reason Apple removed the setting that lets compilations be grouped so each separate artists doesn't show up on the Artist list & CoverFlow. On my iPod this means I have 2500+ artists to scroll through instead of 530 or so. This was a boneheaded decision because it's the folks with the large collections that MOST need this setting. Hopefullly it will return in a future update.

No current problems with my Nano, except even with my smallish collection of music, I'm having to select what not to load.

I'm almost wishing I'd waited a bit and bought the new 16gig Zen!

I bought an 80gig classic and have had zero problems with it, I immediately did the Firmware update when I installed it, I'm using Itunes on my Mac Mini and OSX 10.4.10. I ordered a 8gb touch, I was going to get a 16gb, but I'm mainly gonna use it for the Internet maybe 100 or so albums, and a few Widescreen Movies and TV Shows. I'll use the 80gig mainly for all other TV Shows that are coming from my Apple TV.

Re: New iPods Coming Next Week (9/5/07)

This morning, Apple released firmware version 1.0.2 for the iPod Classic.

Menu navigation is much, much faster now. IMO, this is a much bigger leap in performance than that between the original firmware and 1.0.1. Traversing between menu levels is now instantaneous in almost all instances. The right-side graphic effects also feel like they kick in much faster - it no longer feels like they are slowing everything down. Basically, the Classic now feels as least as snappy as my old 5G 80GB video.

The other big thing they fixed - Compilation grouping is back!! However, it's easily missed. It's no longer an On/Off toggle in the Settings menu. You have to turn the Compilations menu item on in the Music menu customization area. With this menu item showing, artists who appear only in compilations are filtered out of your main Artist list. Remove this menu item, and filter is turned off and ALL artists appear in the main Artist list. (Not, this menu item WAS in the previous firmwares but it had no effect on the Artist list.) Even though it's not as intuitive as it used to be I am extremely glad Apple restored this feature , as it reduces the number of artists I need to scroll through from over 2500 to around 500.

Bottom line - this update makes the Classic what it should have been all along. If you own a Classic, get this update NOW! If you've been holding off due to the reports of performance problems, hold off no longer. I can now wholeheartedly recommend the iPod Classic to all who need the capacity.

This is fantastic news... thanks for informing us!

I've been re-ripping all my CDs to 320kbps with nice pretty album artwork, etc in anticipation of upgrading my 1st generation 5gb iPod to an 80gb iPod Classic (big jump in so many respects). However, all the issues made me hold off and I was really wondering if I'd wind up upgrading at all.

Looks like I'll be making a purchase this week.

It should be noted that a similar software upgrade (1.0.2) now exists for the 3G iPod nano, which has improved Cover Flow and also improved battery level display one more time.

Loading the Nano was a bit of a nuisance. It doesn't support FireWire, and my Mac doesn't have USB 2.0 or a way to add it. So it took a while. (The 160 GB Classic, on the other hand, really NEEDS a fast data link. I shudder to think of loading it over USB 1.x.)

Note that virtually all of my music is from my CD collection. So I don't have lots of cover art to eat flash space or (potentially) slow things down.

Re: New iPods Coming Next Week (9/5/07)

Hi all,

I just got my first iPod, the 80GB Classic. Love it. I have had zero problems with it.

One question, as I am new to iTunes and iPods.

If I get a new computer (which I plan on in the next few months, going from a PC to iMac hopefully) can I transfer everything on the iPod into iTunes on a new computer?

After spending hours loading all my CDs on it, I didn't want to have to go through it all again.

Also, if I get a iPod Nano, can I transfer my same iTunes library that is on this iPod to it though syncing it to iTunes?

Sorry if these are rather simple questions.

Thanks.

You could alway copy all of your music files to an external hard drive and then copy them onto your new computer. You would loose a lot of thinks like playcounts and star ratings if you used them. You could also back up your library using DVD's (if you have a burner) and restore from those, retaining the star ratings and play stats.

Yep.

Re: New iPods Coming Next Week (9/5/07)

Does Apple have holiday sales? I would very much like to get an Ipod but the cheapskate in me is tempted to hold out for either a sale or for the next upgrade. Is there any chance that I will catch some relief sometime between now and 2008, or should I bite the bullet and buy now?

No. Apple actually keeps their authorized dealers on a tight leash, which is why you rarely see sales on Apple merchandise. Academic discounts are the biggest source of "sale prices" for Apple, but more and more iPods have had their academic discounts reduced or removed. I bought my first iPod (5G) 2 years ago, normal price $399, academic price $369 [8.6% off]. Now at the same student store, the 160GB iPod Classic, normal price $349, the academic price is $339 [2.9% off].

Re: New iPods Coming Next Week (9/5/07)

Carlo,

The best price I can get on the new 3G nano and classic models are US$9 off at Fry's Electronics. Otherwise, everyone sells at full suggested retail price or at most US$3 off (Wal-Mart does this).
