need help and advice - SR7001, Pioneer 91

I just installed a new Marantz SR7001 - which sounds as good as it looks. Having issues that after renaming the inputs. When you go thru the inputs selections it shows the factory name for about 5-10 seconds which is well annoying. I guess this is a trivial issues but after spending this much money I want it work the way I want :-)

My question is I am also looking at the Pioneer Elite 91 which has newer HDMI but fewer (which is what lead me to the Marantz) can anyone say how good the Pioneer sounds? Does it have the same warm powerful sound as the SR7001 (which is only rated 110w but seems about twice as powerful as my older Sony 3200ES (plus sounds more "real"?)

Thanks in advance,
John

I have the 82TXs, a step up but 1yr older than the 91TXv. It sounds great but I wouldn't classify it as warm... It's very neutral, especially w/ my speakers which are quite neutral as well.

That said, I would stick with the Marantz as it's definitely a higher end unit than the 91TXv, regardless of newer HDMI version. It seems you really like the sound and I know the build quality is top notch. The factory/custom input name does indeed sound trivial and seems like a very small inconvenience considering the overall quality of the receiver. I'd say the 91TXv (or more directly, last year's 81TXv) would be more in line with something like the SR5001, definitely not the SR7001.

I actually sent the SR7001 back...

I also noticed while watching movies from my Toshiba HD DVD player that there was a louder fluttering noise as the I turned up the volume. That and I had some weird sync issues with the PS3.

So I am looking at the Pioneer still but don't really know what to do next - LOL

I bought a lower/middle end Onkyo 705 (the price was good at a red box store) and it sounds OK but on the lower power end IMHO. no issues though)

And ijust received a Best Buy coupon book today so I may go for the Pioneer 91 after all???

Re: need help and advice - SR7001, Pioneer 91

I would expect about the same level of performance from the 91TXv as the SR705. If you're willing to stick with Onkyo then the SR805 offers a stunning amount of power, features, and heft for the price. It can easily be found for around or under $900 shipped online... probably not much if any more than the 91TXv. Remember, I'm an Elite 82TXs owner, so my Onkyo recommendations aren't fan-boy motivated... they're not motivated from dislike of my Pioneer either, I just think Onkyo has brought MUCH more to the table with this generation of receivers.

I seem to have the same problem with the Marantz SR7001, .

Is there some way to 'fix' it? It is quite annoying..

what issue do you have? the fluttering noise or the naming issue?

if its the "name" thing - I don't think so, as i think the unit uses the standard default names then once you land on it for a set time it will then switch to your name. which to me is pointless to have input naming - no?
