Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

It will certainlly be interesting when they reach volume 5.Because volume 5 will contain the years 1946-1948.In 1947 , shemp replaced curley, so the cover art will be strange, showing four stooges, lol !!!!!!

The set I have includes four shorts, and you can watch them in either b&w or color. I would never have watched them in color had my children not requested it. I suppose it's a good thing that the option is there for some, however.

Maybe the cover art will show clips from the episode in which four Stooges appear.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

Now that Sony has finally done the right thing by the Stooges and are releasing all their shorts in chronolgical order and in glorious black and white, let's not start this colorization thing up again...

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

I certainly would *not* like any colorization option but would beg Sony to put English subs on these releases!

The color would take up so much space on the disc that they'd have to cut off several shorts. So you would end up paying for less. Sony said that the colorization ship has sailed, never to return (thankfully).

Thank goodness for that. And I think children (and many adults) should be weened from the idea that the only films and tv shows worth seeing are in color. Or that "old" (that is, say, anything produced more than 5 years ago) automatically = bad/boring.

I think there is a point at which such thinking ceases to be merely a personal preference, and begins to be a character flaw.

But what about people like me who only like old movies and TV shows, and none of the new ones? I look upon that as a sign of intelligence, good character, discrimination and decency.

Someone told me about a woman who said she will not waste time watching any TV show or movie that isn't brand new, and the very idea of such a thing depressed me for about three days.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

After having watched approximitely half of disc 1, I can say with confidence, that the restoration job here is just as fantastic as volume 1 .Ive been checking amazon the last few days for sales ranks, this seems to be selling the same exact copies that volume 1 was selling, a few days prior to release date !!! My prediction is when all is said and done, volume 2 will have sold around the same copies volume 1 did.Not only that, but volume 1 is still in the top 120 dvds !!!!My only concern is when they reach the shemp years, I like the guy, but the cold hard fact is, watch how the sales drop off dramatically , once we get to that volume.I hope sony doesnt abandon the series at that point.Because I want all 190 shorts in my possession, Curley, Shemp , and even Joe Besser , im a completist.I would hate to own just all the Curleys, and 1 volume of Shemp.

I will be more concerned when they reach the Besser years (but for the same reasons you state wrt Shemp). I too am a completist, but only with shows and series worth completing. The Three Stooges is IMO definitely worth completing. I will be purchasing this one soon, so that will help the sales at least ... by one.

BTW, are you interested in the longer films (the films apart from the shorts)? I must say that I am not, but I really do want to own the 190 shorts.

Tony,

Yes, that's right. I was curious if you planned on getting them. I own only Snow White and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World; the second one isn't really a Stooge film. I just thought I would mention it since they do appear in it. But I'm definitely with you on the magic 190, however.

Tony,

I'm envious that you've gotten to see some of the episodes from vol. 2, disc 1. That's really great. I want to order mine now, but I have to wait one day.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

While I cant tell you where I get dvds early, Ill give you a hint on how to pull it off.Order dvds from small online retailers , that are not as big and popular as the amazons, dvd empires, deep discounts.Small online retailers, sometimes send dvds out more than a week in advance !!! The stooges dvd was mailed to me on may 13th , and I received it on may 23rd here in Greece !!!

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

1 last thing to add for today, if this follows the time frame of the first 2 volumes, volume 3 should arrive late December.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

Late December for most of us; mid-December for Tony.

Or perhaps tomorrow for Tony.

Tony,

Thanks for the tips. I can wait, but it's good to know some options are out there for future releases.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

I bought two copies mine and my brothers, they're shipping tomorrow and should arrive on friday to Melbourne, Australia.. I got the quickest shipping which cost more than the two dvd sets but for the Stooges it was worth it...

Im glad you got yours 8 months early Tony..

Tony et al.,

We watched Punch Drunks and Men In Black last night (vol. 1, episodes from 1934). We've watched these before, but I must say that it's a pure joy seeing how much our children (ranging in age from 3-15) can't wait to see these shorts. And what's really wonderful is that they've seen the nineteen episodes from vol. 1 at least once, and yet want to watch them over and over. For my own part, I've seen many of these several times over the years. And what I'm picking up from repeated viewings is quite amazing.

BTW, when our three-year old wants us to put The Three Stooges shorts on, she says "The Three Students."

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

Jhro, do you mean sizewise ??? On my book shelf right next to volume 1 , it looks to be the same height, length, width.Basically its the same type of boxset used for volume 1, but with diffrent photos, inside the slim cases are the same as volume 1. Ockeghem, its nice to hear little kids that are into the stooges.I remember, I started at a young age myself.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

The volume 2 is now number 8 on amazon sales ranks!!!!!!! I beleive the highest volume 1 did, was number 10.Volume 3 is a done deal with these sales numbers.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

It is doing well on Amazon that is for sure but you won't find this in any brick and mortar stores at least not in my area. I was surprised to see that out of all the westerns released last week, Walmart had Man of the West in the bargain bin for 7.50. This was the only classic release that they carried though from last weeks western releases and must have been a mistake on their part in ordering it. It was interesting that they had 15 copies of Man of the West and the next day only had 4 left. I am sure that if Walmart would carry some of these releases like the Three Stooges and others they would find they sell a great deal better than all the John Wayne movies they load up their selves with. The only thing holding back huge sells on these Three Stooges releases is availability in local stores in my opinion.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

The only chain that will definitely (that I know of) carry it is Fry's. My local Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Target never carried these. With Fry's mainly being localized out West, it's not a good market.. but given that Amazon is a good indicator of sales, I hope this bides well for a third volume.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

I was against ordering online for the longest time, but all that has changed. I'm tired of going in and wasting my time with 'Bust' Buy. So now I have the 2nd volume of the Stooges coming in the mail -- and it's NOT from 'Bust' Buy's site, I can assure you of that!

Yes I buy everything on line as well for the last 8 years or so as I am a classic movie fan. Yet I am sure that there are a great many people including my parents, brothers and some of the people that I work with that never even knew or will know about them until they see them show up at places like walmart or someone tells them about it.

The Three Stooges are very popular with all ages of people. In my observations, they are the only black and white shows that some younger people don't mind watching. In fact they were some of the first black and white shows I ever remember watching. I remember watching them on those pre-laser disc plastic sleeve RCA seletavision discs back in the early 80's growing up and to my memory the brightness and contrast and picture quality were quite a bit better than on any of the older dvd releases up until these Vol releases came out. At the time I developed a great fondness to the Black and white image and the level of contrast and crispness to the image that has developed an extreme liking to all black and white movies and shows ever since. I would say that I prefer to watch black and white to color now and a great deal of this has to do with that early introduction to Three Stooges shorts and Original Twilight Zone episodes.

I used to just order things online when they were cheaper than a brick and mortar store's prices but if a store doesn't have a catalog title in their ad, I always order online now. I just assume that they probably won't have it in stock so it isn't worth the effort of looking.
