You're welcome! Glad to be able to contribute something useful to this forum once in a while! If I hadn't seen the display that hadn't been set up yet (just the sign was up, but none of the items on the shelves were the items on the sign), I wouldn't have known anything about it. There were no shelf-talkers by the items that were on sale.

And my purchase ("Picket Fences") was tagged as $54.99 -- , indeed! Whenever I see something marked with a price like that and it rings through at $30 less, I feel like I've really gotten away with something....

Mike,

Having moved to Albany in 1987, I was too late for the glory days of Hellman's Theater. I do seem to remember the building though (not sure it was still in operation). Was it on Washington Ave?

Anyway, we had a few jewels or our own in Syracuse, before everything got chopped up into multiplexes with mini screens!

Sure was! Right across Washington Avenue from the main SUNY/Albany campus. I think there's a hotel there now.

Did you know I went to SU (Class of '81)?! I went to some shows in Loew's (no movies, though. I saw all them on campus! ) the War Memorial, etc. I actually saw Liza Minnelli at the War Memorial!

Hey, Mike, if you PM me your address, I'll order you a Firefly set from Amazon. I received it as a gift and after watching it, kicked myself for not catching it on TV. It's worth watching!!! And I appreciate you doing the roundups!!

Well, this certainly is a small world. I was also living in Syracuse at the time, Mike. I wasn't attending school though. Rather, I moved there in 1978 to be part of the startup of local radio station - 95X (WAQX.) I also saw many shows at the War Memorial and Leow's (aka the Landmark Theatre.) Leow's was a magnificent old movie house in its day. I vividly recall seeing Yellow Submarine on the big screen there.

Hey Gary, I remember 95X! What did you do there?

Before we drift too far off topic, I was the production director and did nights from 10 pm - 2 am, sandwiched in between Ed Levine and Dia.

I also use to listen to Joe Gallagher (and Marge) on WHEN while I was at SU. Probably the only college kid who listened to ANY AM radio! Joe is now in Albany still doing P/T on air work at WGY.

And, Gary, I remember the start-up of WAQX.

I interned at WTVH Channel 5 while I was there. I bet Ric's got a channel 5 story or two. I worked mostly with Jim Holland & Joe Sottille on the 11pm newscasts. Ron Curtis and Kai Maxwell were the main daytime anchors.

Okay, Mike, now this is getting freaky!

Before relocating the family to Columbia, MO, my last job in Syracuse was at WTVH!

I served as director of client services under general manager, Gary Wordlaw. For several years prior to that, I was manager of advertising for a large retail food concern and I did weekly broadcast production at TV5. Since we maintained an office in the WTVH building, I got to know Ron over the years and I must say he was always a gentleman and a class act. I was saddened to hear of his passing. Lastly, and even more amazingly, a very good friend of mine at the time, dated Kai when she worked at TV5.

Pass the popcorn, Tony!

Re: Weekly RoundUp 8-21-2007

Sorry no channel 5 stories from me (first tv job was in Columbus, GA)... except that I worked with Jim Holland & Joe Sottille here in Albany in the late 80's! Holland was the News Director and Sottille was the weather guy before he got axed with a bunch of others during a blood bath when the station got bought out by a new company!

Ahh, memories!

Hadn't heard that Ron Curtis died. How long ago was that?

Ron died from cancer in December, 2001, less than a year after he retired from TV5. Here is his Syracuse Press Club "Wall of Distinction" bio.
