Caught Stardust this afternoon and I loved it. Easily my favorite film I've seen this summer (admittedly I haven't seen Bourne Ultimatum) yet. Cast was great (probably the best role I've seen DeNiro in for I don't know how long), visuals were beautiful, and the score was also one of the best I've heard this year. Just a magical movie.

Really need to pick up the book now...

Kevin, I have to agree, the movie was just beautiful, some minor problems if I were to quibble, but the acting, visuals and score were all top notch.

You're right about Deniro, but I've never seen Clair Danes look any better, I think I nearly fell in love by the end.

Oh, I did shed a tear near the end

I had a really good time watching this film. It might be this generation's "The Princess Bride", though I would put "Stardust" a tad below TPB if I were ranking them.

The fantasy/fairie tale of a film starts off whimsically enough, but as it builds and introduces characters, the film gains quite a bit of momentum, helped by a nice screenplay with nary a dead spot in the film (impressive for a 128-minutes film these days), and finishes up with a nice conclusion. I liked how no matter how large or small the role was, each actor (be they principal or ancilliary) gave just enough to elicit a laugh or curiousity from the viewer. The large cast is rather good, without much of a weak spot in the lineup.

And then when I realized that it was based off the story by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Charless Vess, I understood why the source material could yield such a delightful cinematic fairie tale. Matthew Vaughn had the right directorial tone for the film, and it paid off time and time again.

I give it 3.75 stars, or a grade of A-.

I saw this tonight and LOVED it. I've never been big on fairy tales or fantasy type stuff, even as a kid. I do like the LotR movies a lot, but since those came out I've been somewhat annoyed with the fantasy genre's big-boom. Although, there was something about the trailer for this one that drew me in enough to see it in theaters, probably the more swashbuckling tone. Thought it might be a lot of fun like The Count of Monte Cristo or certain aspects of the Pirate movies were, and I turned out to have one of the greatest theater-going exerpinces in a long while. I never saw The Princess Bride, so luckily I didn't have any feelings of this being a "type" of movie for this particular generation, (though I'm sure it is), and I could just enjoy it to the fullest.

Fun and magical fairy tale. The Princess Bride of this generation. Robert De Niro in a very un - De Niro like performance. His best comical performance in a while. Michelle Pfeiffer was a total W.I.L.T.F. Great performances all around. Great ending. Loved this movie.

What an unexpected pleasure this film was! It is the perfect blending of a fairy tale and modern romantic comedy. The performances are all wonderful, especially from the scene-stealing Robert de Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. The dark humor is some of the best I've ever seen, and the ending is pure Hollywood magic.

It sounds like everyone has similar opinions about the movie so far.

Re: *** Official STARDUST Review Thread

Saw this last night and found it to be a good time. I haven't read the novel in a long time so I can't comment on how close or accurate it was to the original work but who cares!? It was so internally consistent and well plotted that it didn't matter. It was well shot, well acted (even De Niro's swishy performance, though it made me nervous that it almost seemed a bit forced...almost) and a joy from beginning to end. Highly recommended viewing to fans of genre films or just fans of fine escapist entertainment.

Re: *** Official STARDUST Review Thread

Wow! I really don't know what else to say, but I'll try. I read the book several years ago, and remember liking it quite a bit, so when I heard they were making a movie, I had an interest in seeing it. I wasn't expecting a lot really, and don't remember the details of the book, so I have no idea how close it followed Gaiman's original story, but I watched Stardust tonight. What a wonderfully amazing experience!! I think this is easily one of my favorite movies of 2007. It's nice to see in today's trend of violent, profane, R rated movies (which I have no problem with at all mind you), that you can still find tremendously entertaining, clean movies. A real gem all around. I rented the HD-DVD, but as soon as it hits Blu-ray, this will be quickly added to my library.
