Denon 1920 v. Oppo 980

So, I'm trying to decide between a refurbished Denon 1920 or an Oppo 980. There is a $20 difference between the two I'm looking at. I need component (for now) hence I'm looking at the 980 as opposed to the 981. The Oppo has HDMI 1.2 and the Denon 1.1. I can't utilize HDMI yet, but hope to in the near future.
Any thoughts as to which would be the better choice?
Thanks!

Re: Denon 1920 v. Oppo 980

I don't know anything about the Denon 1920, but my 980H has been a truly awesome machine. Packed with features that other DVD players will never dream of having. Let me list some things off the top of my head:

**7.1CH Audio, Nice Sharp Picture, DSD (for SACD) over HDMI, HDMI 1.2a, HD-JPEG, USB 2.0, 480i over HDMI (for an external scaler), & 1080p support.

**Support for DIVX/XVID/MP3/WMA/JPEG/OMG/MPEG2&4/HDCD/DVD-A&V/SACD & more.

**Re-designed circuit board, newest Mediatek chipset customized for OPPO, Improved Cirrus Logic DAC, & higher-grade materials (ie. capacitors & components used internally.)

**Also redesigned asthetics, new "computer type" detachable power connector, re-designed tray, "re-colored" remote, & fairly useful front panel controls.

One of my favorite features is the USB 2.0 input on the front. HD-JPEG makes images look beautiful and even the largest ones load very quickly. The output provides enough power for my 2.5" external hard drive (must be formatted in FAT32) & video files can be transferred to it & then watched on the OPPO. Or another method would be to utilize a USB Flash memory stick. Sweet!

For the price, the 980 is likely to be the clear winner. Neither will upscale copyrighted material via component though.

Re: Denon 1920 v. Oppo 980

I don't have experience with the Denon 1920, and only limited experience with the Oppo 980H, but I think the Oppo is probably the better choice.

In addition to the features viperdream26 mentioned, I would add:
- The Oppo has multi-region / multi-format capability. If you want to play imported DVDs from regions 2-6 or convert PAL to NTSC, the Oppo can do these things.
- The Oppo can output a direct DSD bitstream from SACDs. Combined with a new receiver or pre-pro that supports DSD over HDMI 1.2, you can finally get an all-digital connection for SACD. (Both the Denon and the Oppo should be able to output DVD-A over HDMI.)

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't aware of some of those additional features. I'm certainly leaning more towards the Oppo now.
Anyone care to chime in in defense of the Denon?

Re: Denon 1920 v. Oppo 980

Denon doesn't even manufacture the DVD-1920. This is outsourced to Funai, as are all entry-level Denon DVD players. The 2930, 3930 and 5910 are all made by Denon however.

No question I would purchase the Oppo. That being said, Funai does make quality DVD players (the newer DVD-1930 is really good, just not quite as good as the Oppo).
