I'm shocked there wasn't a thread for the show already, considering it premieres this Friday night (8/10). Anyone have last minute thoughts?

I didn't even know the show existed. Who is running it?

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

It's airing on Sci Fi, 9 pm, starting tomorrow night. The pilot is 90 minutes.

Eric Johnson, who played Whitney in Smallville, is Flash.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

I'll have to check it out but I'm not holding my Breath on how good it will be, this has great potential to Suck. Ming is now Just Ming, not Ming the Merciless. And When Whitney bought it I was'nt crying so having the Eric playing Flash does'nt thrill me, but I guess he looks ok. Will the Ship be Penis Shaped?

I hope it's better than Painkiller Jane.

Umm, I didn't even know there was a first season. I saw the movie as a kid and that's it. Is it a new series or something old that came out on dvd?

Post #4, my friend. New series. Starts tomorrow night on Sci Fi, 9 pm. 90 minute opener, hour long episodes. Picked up for a full 22 episodes.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

I'll give it a try, but I'm guessing since my Flash Gordon is Buster Crabbe far more than Sam Jones, it probably won't offer me much.

Heh. I wonder if it's a bad omen that one of the actress's last name is Cliche.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

I watch Dr. Who, so i guess i will stick around after that. Doesnt look to promising. I guess it cant be worse than Tremors. I do like Doctor Who, and Galactica. We only have 6 more months to wait for more Galactica! Thats about it for Sci-Fi, been slim since they ditched Farscape.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

Wow. Next week, you can buy the pilot for the low, low price of $20 for a single episode. Even if Flash Gordon is the greatest TV show ever, I think I'll just watch it for free and wait for a complete set.

Of course, it'll probably street for lower than that, but it's still more than I'm willing.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

I'll be checking this out tonight - I'm a big fan of SciFi's original programming generally, and I'm hoping for another good contemporary update of a classic series/property (a la BSG).

I will also be very shallow and admit that I like that kid from Smallville quite a bit.

I saw some footage from the SciFi digital press tour and the cast seemed very likeable and into getting the chance to make the series.

The way I figure it, "Karen Cliche" (pronounced kleesh) is a good-news/bad-news indicator: She's got an uncanny knack for being cast in bad Canadian-produced shows, but she's generally one of the best things in them. It's like she's not quite good enough to make the big leagues, but she's better than everyone else in triple-A.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

To be honest, the promos make the show look a little too serious and gritty for my tastes. Give me Sam J. Jones and Max Von Sydow any day!

here is a link for a bunch of reviews on the new series, and it doesn't look good either.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

Tom Shales of the Washington Post isn't exactly a fan:
Quote:
The planet Mongo, sadly, is no longer hurtling on a collision course toward Earth, its trajectory once controlled by evil emperor Ming the Merciless. Ming isn't even entirely merciless anymore, though still not the kind of guy you'd hire to babysit, and Mongo has been downgraded from planet to a sort of neighborhood.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

It's Summer and I want a light hearted romp through the Universe.
I want laser beams and spaceships and weird aliens.

I'm invested in BSG, so I keep watching it, but I don't need another drama.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

Horrible. Every contrivance in the book. Horrible script and bad acting.
Farscape did it much better.
Thanks Bonnie Hammer for giving us a poor substitute.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

I was actually looking forward to this. I guess mainly because I thought they were making a show based on the comic strip/serials/80s movie and not just dumping character names into some atrocious mistake.

I can't believe this ever got put on the air. The only appealing thing I can see for the network is that it had to be cheap. If it wasn't, this thing is even more of a train wreck than I originally thought.

Now, I love the 80s movie, probably out of nostalgia. But, the one thing I never thought I'd be saying is that 27 years later they managed to remake Flash Gordon with worse acting, worse writing, and while the effects may be "better", the movie actually went for and achieved more because Mongo actually looked like an alien planet instead of Canada.

The only one I don't blame is Eric Johnson. If he had a script to work off of, I think he could've pulled it off.

Now, when I hear "Flash! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" that "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" translates to agony.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

I can't believe how bad this show was. I was so bored by it, I spent more time reading HTF. I don't even know where to start. And SCI FI greenlighted this over "Caprica"? Wow!

I too am a fan of the 80's movie and consider it a camp classic. This show is trying to take itself too seriously. I'll give it one more episode since pilots are sometime slow paced because they have to introduce the characters but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

From the sounds of things I didn't miss much. If it ran 90 Minutes you really had only 60 minutes of Show, you know what the rest was!

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

How the bloody f*** can you have Flash Gordon without any freakin' space ships? And based on the previews, it looks like most of the show takes place on Earth. Do any the dimwits at SciFi understand what makes Flash Gordon cool?

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

I really wasn't surprised at how horrible this was. The producers went to great length's to distance their product from the movie and the source material, when they really should have embraced the campiness and comic fun inherent in the character.

yes, but somewone decided to use a sound alike or actual queen movie music in the preview

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

Michael's post has convinced me to give it one more try, but I was ready to rescind my series recording based on the pilot. The modern audience is just so sophisticated that there's no way they'd sit still for Mongo being on a collision course with Earth, and Flash being able to travel by rocket to another planet. Well, fine. But, the neanderthals watching serials in the '30s at least had *fun*. How about we get off our high horses and get back to that? I also agree that I can't really blame EJ. He tried. I was embarrassed for him during the whole "keep smiling" scene. I can't believe SciFi ordered an entire season before seeing a single frame. Boy, I bet they're kicking themselves over that one. Surely, they can back out of the deal. Otherwise, 21 more weeks of audience dropoff to come.

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

Wait, wasn't earth's MOON on a collision course with earth in the 1980 film? I'm pretty sure it wasn't Mongo...

and I missed this but sure doesn't sound like I missed much

Re: Flash Gordon Season One Discussion

I'm referring to the serial. I haven't seen the '80 film in forever.
