Very true. I would also say that "great" is in the eye of the beholder. For example, I HATED Midnight Cowboy, which is generally regarded as a "great" film and has the Best Picture Oscar to show for it.

The trouble with hd media is that it has been corrupted. Sony pulled the nuclear button, so to speak, by buying off Disney, Fox, and MGM. If the public had chosen bluray then that would have been the way it goes. Buying off studios is not consumer choice. I will not reward it by going with bluray. I know some people are going to mention Paramount and Toshiba but they did not start it. Sony did. If someone punches you in the mouth then you have every right to retaliate.

Do I expect my attitude to hold sway? No. Most people are sheep and just go along. I expect the cheap shots that come my way and it just strengthens my resolve. I will stick with hd-dvd. I do have a list that I intend to buy and will stick with it.

The reason that I would eliminate the PS3 is that I don't believe I should pay for a bluray player that I don't want. Again Sony is shoving something that I don't want down my throat. With Nintendo and X-Box, I am paying only for the gaming system.

The difference between dvd and and hd is that dvd was that the consumers decided. I will buy dvds however I have cut back. I canceled a number of Warner double dips and marginal titles that I was interested in. Right now about the only thing that interests me are a number of tv shows that I love.

Out of a very funny post, this was the part that made me laugh the most. No offense but why are you determined to be a martyr for a video format?

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

And implying that we are sheep is pretty insulting to those of us who may be making a decision to get a Blu-Ray player.

Whatever decision we make is ours to make, just as your is yours to make. It's a free country and just because you don't agree with it is no excuse to be insulting.

I'm sorry, but this fanboy FUD has got to stop. Show any of us financial proof Sony "bought" any of those companies you mentioned. Solid proof. Frankly, I know I haven't seen any.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

No, it's this childish bickering that has to stop.

Francis was replying to a question by Brandon Conway: "Would you mind explaining it?". His answer was elicited and he agreed to post it here.

So there's no reason then to proceed and adhere all sorts of qualifications to his post or fight his opinions.
The question is not whether or not you agree or disagree: it's his personal opinion that was asked for.

Please proceed with this thread without continuing this specific topic of discussion. I'm asking that of all parties involved.

Thanks for understanding.

Amen. I've had to employ the use of this site's Ignore feature twice this week for first time in the five plus years I've been here. It's getting rather sad, and if things continue on to their natural conclusion it's probably only going to get worse.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Francis - thanks for your honest answer. While I don't agree with your position, I will do so with respect.

I'll now follow Cees' instruction to not discuss it further. Maybe at another time you and I can have a cordial discussion about our contrasting viewpoints.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

My software software prediction sales prediction for the week is 80/20. Top 3 will be new BD releases and some older WB catalog will round out the top 5. For the first time in a month actual unit sales of BD will be up (slightly). That's my best guess.

I´m also considering using it..

Francis has some decent points (buried in his posts) and certainly right to his own opinions as a consumer, but some of those comments are more like flaming (even trolling) in my book. "Sony is the blame for the format war" and silly stuff like that.

Discussions and debates should also "evolve" in some ways. With Francis, it´s "I hate Blu-ray and I keep supporting HD DVD until the end of time". Sony is the blame and PS3 sucks.

If he could give some real points and proper arguments (outside of this very personal "I hate Blu-ray", which seems to be the red line through the majority of his comments..), then we could start talking (even debating).

Would this prediction be able to shed any light on what was more effective in moving HD DVDs: Best Buy BOGOs or Amazon 50% Off sales?

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Paul-
Your guess is as good as mine. Speaking hypothetically of course, I would guess that the only HD DVD in the top 10 might be the new Elizabeth movie. I would guess that if we could see the actual data we would be hard pressed to tell that there was a sale on any specific HD DVD titles. I wonder if the Amazon sale will put any older WB BD catalog titles in the top 5?

Saw this post and a thought just occurred to me. I never shop at Best Buy but for those that do, does BB "officially recommend" as best choice any other competing formats such as Dish Network over DirectTV or Apple computers over PC or any of the other competing formats, LCD, Plasma, DLP or other competing formats such as in Digital cameras and phones, projection systems, desk furniture, pen Vs pencil, etc. My impression has always been that they "define" competing formats and systems and let the consumer decide. But, like it said I never shop there. End of thought.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Definitly looking forward to seeing if Uni's Elizabeth2 makes the charts tomorrow. Despite how down I am on the HD DVD format I think this is an excellent disk and hope plenty of folks get to see it. I fear the Combo price is going to be a big turn off tho...

I picked it up but haven't watched it yet. I have never seen the first one either. I may need to have a double feature this weekend.

The latest Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales data show the top-selling Blu-ray Disc title for the week, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Across the Universe, sold more than three times as many copies the week ending Feb. 10 as the top HD DVD seller, Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Blu-ray Disc titles also accounted for 81% of all high-def disc sales for the week, with HD DVD at just 19%.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Wow--I thought Crimson Tide and Celine (for GFs and wives?) might rank top 10. But instead two titles released seven and 12 months ago (Goodfellas and Blood Diamond, respectively) did.

My guess is that Crimson Tide will make a strong appearance in the numbers for next week.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Glad Elizabeth charted. If you guys havent seen it, go rent it! It convinced me to go buy the original for $13 at the Deep Discount sale after I already had two copies go through my hands, one to another HTF reviewer before I knew anything about it and another that I gave away as a contest.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

A quick question as I haven't seen anyone say or ask it, will Netflix still carry SD DVD's? I plan to get into BD very soon however considering that SD DVD still outweights BD disc in terms of sheer numbers of titles, and the fact that most homes still only have a SD player, it seems it would be foolish of Netflix to dump SD DVD at this point.

YES! I bet standard DVD rentals account for 99%+ of their business. They have no plans to drop SD DVD.

After reading most of the articles on how Toshiba is likely to discontinue the HD DVD format, I found the other recent developments @ Toshiba carry an interesting subtext: what if Toshi is moving towards HD on memory cards?

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Just so everybody is aware of Toshiba's decision to stop production of HD DVD.

As a longtime HT buff who doesn't really care much about HD delivery formats much, It's amazing to me how quickly HD-DVD fizzled out and died. Watching the last two months, from Warner announcing support to Blu-Day to Toshiba declaring the format dead was, what, two months? After a "format war" of, what a year? Year and a half?

Wired is reporting that's 2+ years out for Toshiba, and judging by Toshiba's recent track record on consumer electronic tech like SED and HD DVD, I'd be surprised if it's up and running in 4 years. Of course, that doesn't even begin to touch the problems with flash memory like it's (IMO) prohibitive pricing and higher failure rate with heavy use.

Its funny if you go back and look at all the films that have won Best Picture over the years, very few of them would be known by the general public.

For instance, does anyone know the best picture for 1933? Probably not very many, but I'll bet many have seen King Kong released the same year.

BTW the best picture for 1933 was a film called Cavalcade.
