Dunno exactly what you mean by all the references to "personal." If you have a penchant for certain behaviors and someone calls them out, those very well could be legit criticisms. It doesn't ipso facto mean the person making the critique has crossed some inappropriate line. Your intimation is that anything you construe to be "personal" is inaccurate or misguided. I disagree.

If I criticize your haughty, sarcastic, snotty tone, will you take it "personally"?

Thank you, Sanjay, for saying what needed to be said. Paul's personal attacks are here for all to see. For whatever reason, his don't seem to get taken down. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Because, Lyle, there's a big difference between critiquing the (perhaps unintentional, but in this case, not so much) bias that creeps into one's perspective by going to a problematic news source (when the Nf story was all over the 'Net this morning) and resorting to profanity and name calling (as you did earlier today in a different thread just because I agreed with your friend's comment about Fox News).

Enough with the tit-for-tat that is going on between some of you. Talk about the issues at hand without any references towards other members. I suggest some of you use the "ignore" function as it's a great tool to avoid certain situations/people. Thank you.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

I was just thinking of rejoining Netflix (I've been out for several years) I'm purple and would have rented both formats. Now they are taking that option away. It's a shame that I will have less and less to play on the HD-DVD player that is only 3 months old.

As a matter of fact, I was thinking of renting Star Trek season 1. I'm still wondering if Paramount will release the rest of Star Trek on HD-DVD or Universal with Battlestar Galactica.

Best Buy to Recommend Blu-ray over HD DVD

Best Buy to Officially Recommend Blu-ray to Customers

Honestly, if Best Buy hasn't been recommending blu-ray over HD-DVD for the last month, they really ought to be ashamed of themselves. I hope they're at least being honest to customers about HD-DVD's (lack of) studio support.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

It's a dilemma re ST and BSG isn't it, Ric? Even if Par announces BD support tomorrow, there still is the question of how long it will be before everything they've released exclusively on HD DVD appears on BD. I had been counting on Nf to tide me over during that window of time.

I like that WHV has stated they intend to release all of their titles currently on HD DVD exclusively on BD by 2009. Still a long time to wait though. Will some of these HD DVD exclusives one day fetch the kind of prices that Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs Ultradiscs do now on ebay? By the time we get greater clarity on these issues, the best time to sell used hardware and software might have passed.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

You've said a mouthful, Paul. Two of the big reasons I got into HD-DVD in the first place was Star Trek and BG. I haven't bought into either yet and am not sure what to do. Even though I am now purple, I want the whole series to be on one format.

I've already lost all hope of that with Harry Potter (got the first 5 in HD-DVD)

I'm currently standing at 34 HD DVDs, two of them are BSG and ST. I do not plan to sell any of my HD DVDs until I have at least watched them once. The three remaining WB HD DVD exclusives, I have no problem selling them as soon as I have watched them. By the time they are released on BD, I will be ready to watch them again. There's no point in me tying up my money in those in the meantime.

The only other Paramount HD DVD I have left is Transformers. I have a feeling that will make a quick appearance on BD if Paramount announces support for that format. The HD DVD copy will go to my 5-year-old.

The 29 Universal films are the big question marks. If Bill Hunt is correct, not only will Universal be the last holdout, but how many of their catalog titles are going to make a BD bow and how quickly? I'd say it'll be a while given the sales of catalog titles. So, I think I might as well watch and hold onto them until a BD release is announced.

The time to sell HD DVD titles is passing quickly. My advice to those worried about how quickly HD DVD exclusive content will be released on BD is to watch the price of the HD DVD counterparts closely the first half of this year. Maybe they'll get to a price that you're comfortable with buying them as an 'extended rental'.

Yeah, I may prefer Blu-ray Disc, but I'd like to think I'm above the needless torture of HD DVDs.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

I knew when I bought my Toshiba hd-a2 that blu ray would win (I bought beta first in the videotape wars). At least I only spent $98 on it at Wal Mart pre black Friday sale & have strictly used it for upconversion. Now I'll be getting a blu ray player sometime in the future but not in a rush.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

I made the decion that hd-dvd is best for me. I have no plans to change and I do have a number of hd-dvd movies that I plan to buy. I have no plans to sell any of them. I bought the first season of Star Trek yesterday on hd-dvd.

If they don't want to sell to me in that format, then I can concentrate on dvds and join the dvd is good enough crowd. That saves me money. There are plenty of places I can spend my money that are not awash in kickbacks. For example, in videogaming, I can have it my way. I can also tell Sony what they can do with their PS3.

And since we're talking about telling the truth, maybe BB should be telling consumers that dvd has about a 100-1 lead over bluray. Maybe they should be recommending upconverting dvd players.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Francis, I don't understand why you would deny yourself movies in HD simply because of your disdain for Sony. It just seems so extreme to me. Would you mind explaining it?

I mean this sincerely. It just baffles me.

I mean, back in the 90s I was very pro-Nintendo and liked the Nintendo 64 much more than the Sony PlayStation, but when push came to shove a few years later I owned both a PlayStation 2 and a Nintendo GameCube so I could play all the games I wanted. Now I have a Wii and a PS3. If the HDM format war had dragged out for much longer I would have picked up a Toshiba HDA2 and enjoyed both formats. But it didn't happen that way. Blu-ray is gonna be the format, and it's a good one. Not perfect, but good - even very good.

I simply don't see the reason to be so antagonistic towards it.

Well if they do that, they could sell a lot of the Toshiba HD DVD players since their big push seems to be how good they are at upconverting.

Come on, man. DVD has been around for 10 years...a decade. If you seriously expect Blu Ray (or HD DVD), which has been around for far less time, to make significant inroads against DVD in under 2 years...I'm not sure what to say.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

You know Sony helped develop DVD as well, they get paid royalties on it just like Toshiba, but Toshiba gets a much bigger slice. Still, on principle It's clear to me Francis will have to stop buying DVDs, and just to be safe he should probably destroy any in his current collection.

Depending on when this fire happened, I think I finally may have an answer as to why Disney has never released an anamorphic Armageddon.

"Michael Bay Relishes Blu-ray's Victories"

I could do without Mikey's martyr complex: he says “No one believed [him]” about a BD victory. That's just not true. Also have to disagree on his comment that BD is "just sharper." The whole vid codec issue basically makes statements like that impossible to truthfully make.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Why I haven't bought into BD is simple: no "must-own" titles yet, and comparatively speaking, the hardware's too expensive. I know I will eventually, but I'm waiting for that elusive "must-buy" before I take the plunge.

No Blade Runner or CE3K for you, Stephen?

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Already got Blade Runner, and CE3K doesn't hold the allure it once did. Lawrence of Arabia might get me to take the plunge. And my favourite movie of all time (Army of Darkness) is already on HD DVD.

Why not enjoy watching HD-DVDs since you already have a player? Can you not tell the difference on your TV?

Well, people like different movies. Very little to do with "formats", IMO. All formats (SD DVD, HD DVD, BD) have great movies. And bad ones. And for some people, those "great" movies "holds no interest", and for some, those "bad movies" are actually "interesting"..

For me, this tells enough about your attitude. Ridiculous comment.

But who knows, perhaps you can start concentrating to those SD DVDs sooner than you think..
(oh, I forgot. Sony releases SD DVDs too.. My bad)
