I'm not sure how Buena Vista relates to home video. It may be that Buena Vista only deals with theatrical distribution. The Pirates discs for instance have both Walt Disney Home Entertainment and Buena Vista Home Entertainment listed. I suppose Walt Disney Home Entertainment could be the company that does the actual disc authoring, and Buena Vista is the distribution arm. I'm sure it all has something to do with tax law.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

"Buena Vista" is generic short hand referring to any number of WDC divisions. It's not my understanding that those two words alone properly refer to any Disney entity. Buena Vista Theatrical Distribution is the correct name for WDC's theatrical distributor (although I've also seen Buena Vista Pictures Distribution). Buena Vista Home Entertainment is the home vid distribber. WDHE is a BVHE label, a way of explicitly getting the Disney name/brand on boffo/family fare, a name they do not want to use on, say, Miramax titles.

Wow--Cloverfield did $41M this weekend. And tomorrow's a Holiday. 10th biggest opening in Par history. Although it hardly changes the entire (im)balance of the spring HDM release slate, it certainly gives Par a strong arrow in its HD DVD release quiver. It could conceivably street in May.

I haven't seen the movie, but I thought Cloverfield was recorded on standard def video (I've heard it referenced as Blair Witch meets Godzilla).

I think it was the Panavision Genesis HD camera that was used in Cloverfield.

This is a bit strange news (and new reason to drop "format neutrality"):

"R&B Films to Exclude HD DVD for Future Releases:

Richard Casey of R&B Films (who have released Chronos and Nature’s Beauty on both HD formats) has announced that "we are excluding HD-DVD with respect to our future releases" in a forum posting on blu-ray.com.
Richard said that this decision was made prior to Warner’s decision announcement and he cited "experience with the HD-DVD audience and the abuse I took in the AVS Forum" as his motivation to drop HD DVD support."

Cloverfield seems to have been shot with a number of different cameras but the Panavision Genesis isn't listed.

Panasonic AG-HVX200 (this is a consumer level HD camera.)
Sony CineAlta F23 (this is a fairly new 4:4:4 HD camera)
Thomson VIPER FilmStream Camera (this is the camera that Zodiac was shot on)

Strange indeed.

Many of us have definitely taken this format war far too seriously.

With due respect to them for choosing whatever format they may choose to release or not release in, I think this is probably the most unprofessional reason one could base their business decision on. Irrespective of what 'Richard' may have stated as their reason for dropping HD-DVD, I really find it hard to believe that his statement reflects truelly on their decision. He probably is just stating this to get back at those he may have had a bad experience with, at AVS. Either way this statement is childish and unprofessional. For does 'Richard' not realize that ultimately it is the same people who will be his customers on Blu-Ray also? The company really needs to hire a better PR person.

Agree 100%. I would have no problem if they announced they were dropping HD DVD because of sales numbers, authoring costs or any number of other reasons. This seems a lot like a third grade "taking my ball and going home" announcment.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Just some figures to ponder over.

NPD group hardware sales figures for HD players. *These figures DO NOT include PS3 sales*

December '07
Blu-ray = 115,132 (60.19%)
HD-DVD = 76,148 (39.81%)

Which means, that inspite of HD-DVDs far lower prices, they were still clearly outsold by Blu-Ray stand-alone players during the Holiday season sales and this was even before Warner went Blu-Ray exclusive.

Week ending January 05, '08
Blu-Ray = 15,257 (51.17%)
HD-DVD = 14,558 (48.83%)

Post Warner announcement:
Week ending January 12, '08
Blu-Ray = 21,770 (92.53%)
HD-DVD = 1,758 ( 7.47%)

Can you imagine what these figures would look like if PS3 sales were included? Add these figures to the software sales figures and I think it's quite clear where this format war is heading.

PS: NPD sales figures are taken from digitalbits.com

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Hardware sales numbers, pre and post warner switch

My Two Cents - Archived Posts (1/22/08 - 1/11/08)

Blu takes 93% of sales.

This DOES NOT include PS3 sales or 360 add-on sales.

I wonder what the numbers look like post Toshiba's fire sale?

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Wow. I can't think of another two weeks straight wherein the Since Inception number moved two points.

I also find it interesting that the Planet Earth BD is in the top ten and the HD-DVD version is not. This may be the first time in a while that the BD version outsold its HD-DVD counterpart.

EDIT: Does HMM always list New Line releases as Warner (Mr. Woodcock), or is this a one time typo?

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

What these don't show is that sales were way down this week. BD was down around 48% from the week prior and HD DVD down around 36%. The 2% increase in share for HD DVD wasn't that they sold more than last week, they just didn't drop as much....It will be interesting to see which way the sales go next week, and if both formats still trend the same way.

Watched the blu-ray disc earlier this week. Got it from Blockbuster Online. Took a while to get used to seeing Alec Baldwin playing a sex symbol and making out with Sarah Michelle Geller though.

I was at Fry's Electronics last night and discovered that they have raised the base price of their blu-ray movies from $19.95 to $22.95. The HD DVDs are still $19.95.

The original street date for 'Suburbun Girls' BD was the 15th, day & date with the DVD. The BD street date was for some reason postponed to the 5th of February, but it seems like Blockbuster may have missed the notification or just decided to ignore it. Amazon still has the BD on pre-order, scheduled for release on the 5th of February.

As stated in my previous post, some sites have either missed or overlooked the postponement of the Blu-Ray disc release. To support my claim, I could post links to several other sites that show the title scheduled for release on the 5th of February, but then so may you and this may just go back and forth. Thus, the simplest way to settle this, is to link to the Image Entertainment Website. Since they are the actual distributors of 'Suburbun Girl', their information should be irrefutable.

'Suburbun Girl' DVD listing. Image Entertainment - Releases for the Week of 01/15/08

'Suburbun Girl' BD listing. Image Entertainment - Releases for the Week of 02/05/08

'Suburbun Girl' BD Details. Image Entertainment - Suburban Girl (Blu-ray)

PS: As for titles being available before street date, I myself get most titles on BD/DVD approx 2 weeks before street date.

I couldn't care less about the movie. I just wanted to say that I rented it from Blockbuster and that the first site I thought of had it available for purchase.

*THAT* may be one of the best indicators on how the remainder of this format war is going wrt consumer purchases. IIRC, Planet Earth was one of the few titles where HDD usually(?) did better than BD. For it to drop like that for HDD and still maintain top 10 sales w/ those kinds of numbers for BD suggests to me that the HDD market has essentially stopped growing while the BD market continues to grow at a solid rate. Of course, this is just one indicator, but it's certainly not the only one...

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Not sure about the reasons behind the swing in Planet Earth sales. BD outsold HD DVD this week by about 4K copies.

Again, like last week, its not that HD DVD really "gained" on BD, it just had less of a drop. BD sales were down 9% and HD DVD was down 4% from the prior week.

I would imagine HDM sales are ultra-cruddy right now.

Very few decent releases lately, and the HD-DVD purchases have dropped off the face of the earth.

And I definately dont' see that translating to more Blu-Sales.
So HD-DVD less, while Blu-Ray has the same, means less overall.
