Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Sanjay - that is pretty remarkable (although it looks like you missed a couple HD-DVD releases).

Even taking catalog titles into account, this is the entire Universal/Paramount/DreamWorks HD-DVD schedule for 2008 so far:

1/8/08

Mobsters
The Pianist
White Noise
White Noise 2: The Light
Zodiac - Director's Cut

2/5/08

Elizabeth: The Golden Age

2/26/08

Beowulf

3/4/08

Into the Wild
Things We Lost in the Fire

3/11/08

Bee Movie
Fletch

3/25/08

Star Trek - The Original Series - Season Two

TBD

American Gangster

A whopping 13 releases.

PS: Although Warner has announced that they will continue to release on HD-DVD till the end of May '08, they have also stated that titles will not be released on HD-DVD day and date with DVD & Blu-Ray. Thus Warner titles have not been counted in the HD-DVD release column for the purpose of this post.
Same could be said for Sony and Disney fronting Blu-ray. Anyway you look at it though....releases this year are looking rather grim.

Actually my list only focuses on 'NEW' (non catalog) tiles and thus catalog titles on both Blu-Ray & HD-DVD are not included. I have edited my original post and added 'American Gangster' & 'Bee Movie' to the list, although I have been unable to find any official announcements for these two titles, Amazon too does not have either of them listed for pre-order.

I just ordered "The Assassination, etc." on HD DVD. So that one seems to be wrong too.

If you were to read the 'post script' note at the end of my post, it says that Warner titles have not been counted for HD-DVD and the reasons for this is also mentioned. The idea of the post was to highlight what one can look forward to with only Universal & Paramount/Dreamworks releasing on HD-DVD.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Sanjay,

"Will not be released on HD-DVD day and date with DVD & Blu-Ray" should be "will not necessarily be released, etc.", and the title I mentioned had the exact same release date as the DVD and BD.

But I'm sure you noticed my smilie as well.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

I think Universal and Paramount were planning on announcing additional releases at CES and are now pondering their options. Assuming they decide to continue to release on HD DVD I think we will see more announcments by the end of the month, if not what is the point of them supporting a format with minimal title releases?

They may continue to support HD-DVD only due to contract obligations. Which could explain the rather sparse releases. Ofcourse this applies only if they don't announce more titles. The rumors that Universal's contract ends January 31st 2008 and that they may be wieghing their options could explain why they only have one solitary title announced for release in the first quarter. Also their statement that the HD-DVD release for 'Lust, Caution' was a clerical error does point to their state of indecision. Otherwise under normal circumstances it is hard to justify an important title like 'Lust, Caution' not being released on HD, specially keeping in mind the Academy Awards around the corner. My personal opinion is that more so than Paramount/Dreamworks, Universal is more than likely to go 'neutral' if not 'exclusive' Blu-Ray, soon.

I know. That's why I said "Even taking catalog titles into account".

However, you still missed the non-catalog title "White Noise 2".

Um, don't forget other countries where there're HD DVD's for BD exclusive titles in the US!
Here's a helpful site. (I'm neutral but I'm more in favour of HD DVD since it seems like it's the more "natural" evolution to DVD. Or something.)

Brett,

Was there a Nielsen/Videscan chart for last week? Last one you posted before today was for 12/23. Is there one for 12/30?

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Apparently they skipped a week for some reason (Christmas? no one really knows why).

The weekly numbers for that week I believe were 61 / 39 according to David Vaughn.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

By the way, is that Nielsen stuff only for the U.S.? If so, then it doesn't have any meaning since the format war shouldn't be decided by only one country. And not all BD US exclusives are such in other countries where they're also HD DVD counter-parts. Do they even take that into consideration? Or are they on a single country bias?
I imoprt DVD's from other countries since I own a multi-regional player and the same will be said very soon about HD DVD titles I'm planning on purchasing. Give or take awhile due on the particular titles, of course. Glad HD DVD is region free.

Warner Outlines HD DVD Separation Plan; Delays 'Invasion,' 'Jesse James' HD DVDs | High-Def Digest

Actually Warner has now confirmed postponement of 'Invasion' & 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford' on HD-DVD by three weeks each and also for all other 'New' Titles on HD-DVD. Thus all 'New' HD-DVD titles will be released after a three week gap following the day & date release of the same titles on DVD & Blu-Ray.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Yes. I think I can guess why a few titles have been postponed lately.
But the fact remains: it's announced and will be delivered soon.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

I would think that Warner would like to have as small a production run on those HD-DVD titles as possible, which is certainly one reason for the 3-week delay period.

Ofcourse the primary reason for continuing to release on HD-DVD until May end, is probably contract obligations to the HD-DVD format. Personally, this policy bothers me because due to this, Warner will continue to restrict their HD quality and features to fit in with HD-DVDs space and bandwith limitations. Once Warner stops releasing on HD-DVD, they should be able to go all out and tweak their releases for Blu-Ray. Ofcourse this is based on specualtion and for all we know, Warner may continue to release titles with higher compression rates and lossy audio tracks with future double dips in mind. If only Warner would have delayed 'I Am Legend' to after the May end deadline.

Blu-ray Dominates Disc Sales Chart Post-Warner Announcement

"Though Blu-ray has outsold HD DVD in overall disc sales by a factor of nearly 2:1 since the start of 2007, last week saw the largest gulf between the two rival formats yet, with Blu-ray commanding an 85% share of all high-def discs sold".

Also, according to Home Media Magazine, the Nielson VideoScan data shows Blu-ray held all the top ten spots on the HD sales chart for the week ending January 13th.

There are Warner titles finishing QC right now that won't street until November '08. I wouldn't expect to see unique encodes for Warner BDs until late this year or early 2009.

That to me, is the most dissapointing news since Paramount decided to go single format.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

Well, it's simply the reality of Warner's long term planning. There's a few HD-DVD discs that are finished that will never see the light of day in the US because their street dates were scheduled for after May 31st.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

You know, I was just thinking about this reported 85:15 BD:HD sales advantage for the week, and truth be told I can't see it getting better for HD-DVD any time soon. I mean, taking just the six major studio distributors (Universal, Paramount/DreamWorks, Warner/New Line, Sony, Fox/MGM, Disney) and 3 minors (Lionsgate, Starz, Weinstein) into account, this is how the release schedule shapes up for the weeks after this report and through the end of February:

1/15

Good Luck Chuck (Lionsgate)
Mr. Woodcock (New Line)

1/22

The Game Plan (Disney)
Saw IV (Lionsgate)

1/29

Daddy Day Camp (Sony)
Damages - Season 1 (Sony)
The Invasion (Warner)
Monty Python's Life of Brian (Sony)

2/5

Across the Universe (Sony)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Warner)
The Brave One (Warner)

The Brave One (Warner) (Possible 3-week delay ahead?)
Crimson Tide (Disney)
Elizabeth: The Golden Age (Universal)
The Jane Austen Book Club (Sony)
Me, Myself and Irene (Fox)
Wall Street (Fox)

2/12

Becoming Jane (Disney)
Gone Baby Gone (Disney)
No Reservations (Warner)

No Reservations (Warner) (Possible 3-week delay ahead?)
We Own the Night (Sony)

2/19

American Gangster (Universal)
In the Valley of Elah (Warner)
In the Valley of Elah (Warner) (Possible 3-week delay ahead?)
The Invasion (Warner)
Michael Clayton (Warner)
Michael Clayton (Warner) (Possible 3-week delay ahead?)
Run Lola Run (Sony)

2/26

30 Days of Night (Sony)
Beowulf (Paramount)
Justice League: The New Frontier (Warner)
To Kill a King (Starz)

That's a lot of blue compared to the red. 25 BD releases, and 8 HD-DVD releases. And that's if those 4 Warner titles don't get the 3-week delay the others have already got, which would push 3 of them to March. That would then be a 25:5 title advantage, with 2 of those 5 getting released 3 weeks after their BD counterpart. Universal and Paramount are releasing 3 titles over the next 7 weeks.

3

Yikes. HD-DVD will be damn lucky to get 20% of the market for Jan/Feb '08.

I believe we saw the same pattern from HD DVD last year. Very few announcements at CES. Then coming slow out of the gate in January and February.

Frankly, I prefer a policy of silence followed by later announcements leading to correctly honoured releases over abundance of announcements followed by repetitive delays and postponements.
