I think it was Sony themselves that did a study that found that something like 60% of PS3 owners had no idea that it had a blu-ray player. And most of those didn't know what blu-ray was. This would make sense if you consider that blu-ray has only ever managed a 2 to 1 sales advantage, when is should be something like 12 to 1.

I don't remember the exact figures but it was something in that neighborhood.

That´s just BS. I do remember the old thread etc, but I didn´t believe it then and I certainly don´t believe it now. If you´ve PS3, you know that it´s also a BD-player.. It´s another question that does that BD mean anything, if you´re a serious gamer etc.

Next anti-PS3 quote, please? Sony perhaps stole somebody's wife?

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

I agree that the 60% figure is bogus, unless of course that number is for worldwide ownership (undoubtedly, blu-ray is less common in some countries than others).

I think the more revealing figure would be just how many PS3s are actually hooked up to a high-def set. Those who do not have an HDTV are probably not buying blu-ray discs since the difference between it and DVD would not be apparent on a standard 480i monitor.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

I remember seeing a story that Sony was trying to educate PS3 owners that it can be used as a blu-ray player. Certainly the fact that they are including bluray movies with PS3 is evidence that the majority of owners either are not aware or do not use them as bluray players.

Yes, because it can't possibly be the standard practice of bundling something to try and help sell a console, right?

It was a fact that the XBOX 360 HD DVD add-on included an HD DVD of King Kong. It wasn't included because the "majority of owners [were] not aware or [did] not use them as [HD DVD] players."

Actually it was not a quote from Sony, but a survey run by NPD.
Quote:
More interesting numbers are coming up from NPD, as 1Up got a hold of the group's "Next-Gen Functionality & Usage" report. Some 6,620 people were asked to answer NPD's survey online. To be eligible, they had to be 6-44 years old and own a next-gen console.

Results have surfaced, listing 40% of PS3 owners that know of their console's Blu-ray player. Half of those who were aware of the feature never watched Blu-ray movies on the machine. Some look down on anything not HD as a thing in the past, but 50% of PS3 owners don't even know what high-def is all about.
As I recall, there was another survey run that had basically the same results.

You know, every car on the road has turn signals, but I have noticed most drivers don't use them. Is that because they don't know they have them? Or they know they have them and don't care? Hmmmm.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

I have definitely noticed more and better sales on BD discs lately than on HD-DVD discs, although it seems to be evening out.

The reason for that, I can only speculate. Either they're trying to offset HD-DVD's cheaper hardware costs or they're simply trying to boost sales.

Say, did someone just mention a new Cloverfield trailer? . . .

Maybe I have just been up too late playing games and watching movies (I'm glad they bundled a movie so I new it could play them ).

List of DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD releases for the perod Nov '07 - Feb '08

I was putting together a list of 'NEW' (not catalog) titles announced on DVD for the period November '07 thru February '08. To make it easier for me to pre-order titles I decided to also mark which titles were also announced for simultaneous release on Blu-Ray. For the heck of it, I made a note of which title's were scheduled for release on HD-DVD also. After I was done, I was genuinely surprised. I really would never have guessed that there would be such a huge imbalance in titles announced for the two respective HD formats. After having carried out this excercise it becomes so clear why it was paramount, pun intended, for HD-DVD to make 'the deal' with Paramount/Dreamworks. Anyhow, for those that might be interested I am listing the titles below:

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

I find it amusing how much passion there seems to be over each format. It's almost as bad as the old DIVX loathing, although in this case neither side is inherently evil.

The best thing for me about this format war is that there appears to be no reason to buy in yet, thereby saving me money on both HD and SD purchases I won't make with HD equivalents.

Blu Ray has more titles (although very few I would buy), but the players are far too costly for me to consider. HD DVD has an easier entry price for players, but again, apart from maybe a handful of titles, nothing I'm all that eager to buy, since I already have everything on DVD, even if the version is not as good.

I'm still not seeing Blu Ray as the long term winner, as it does not appear that they can manufacture either the hardware or software inexpensively enough - IMO they need to be able to build a player for under $20 for the format to succeed (with a $49 selling price), and HD DVD is easier to replicate.

I really don't care who wins as long as media and players are cheap enough and reliable enough to warrant buying. I'm not convinced either of these formats has longevity when it comes to reliable playback given the failure rates I'm seeing on the far less demanding DVD format.

People unwilling to spend more than $50 for a player aren't people willing enough to buy picture and sound equipment worth the upgrade to hi-def in the first place. If either format becomes wal*mart junk then they've lost even if they have won.

I know plenty of people who have been happy to spend large sums on a new TV as their expenditure has a tangible result: a bigger picture. Size is their primary goal, and many aren't interested in (or able to view) broadcast HDTV, but as larger TVs generally support HDTV they have the capability to view it anyway. These same people buy the cheapest DVD player they can find. If they could buy a cheap HD player ($50-100), I'm sure many would be happy to do so.

Of course, some of those people may do something utterly ridiculous such as connect their brand new HD player via composite video, but the company selling it to them won't care.

It isn't a question of upgrading, HD is going to eliminate SD TV and DVD at some point, and whatever format replaces it will need to be dirt cheap to manufacture. It has nothing to do with image quality or upgrading, it's about buying what is available.

Thanks for the info. As mentioned in my earlier post I was making a 'to be released' DVD list for myself and since Mr. Bean's Holiday has been out on DVD over here for atleast 2 months now, I had not listed it. 'No Reservation' on the other hand is already listed. Also, seemingly the release dates for 'The Heartbreak Kid', 'The Kingdom' and 'The Invasion' are not entirely confirmed yet. Sites like Amazon do not yet have a release date for these titles nor are they taking any pre-orders for them. 'No Reservation' on the other hand is already listed. In any case I have edited my prior post to include them.

Re: New Advertising Campaign from Blu-ray against HD DVD

I believe that this subject was moved to this thread so here I go. The first one called "The Coaster", dam that one made me laugh. And the second one was ok but did not strike me as something they should use as a comercial. I honestly think if one of these two might become a comercial on TV they might want to think about a more slick and profesional add. Don't get me wrong the coaster one is great for an internet add.

I am not affended by ether one actually as I own both players. My only question where those ideas for national tv adds? I thought it was funny that they included the Betamax going into the junk closet. I think that was there way of showing they have a sense of humor.

VideoScan: Blu-ray Commands Thanksgiving Week Disc Sales

Quote:
Black Friday? More like Blu Friday. According to Nielsen VideoScan, US sales of Blu-ray discs swelled to a nearly 3:1 lead over HD DVD in the first official week of the holiday shopping season.

DVDs see green on Black Friday as part of retail gains

Quote:
The high-definition format war tilted even more heavily in favor of Blu-ray Disc despite a rash of inexpensive HD DVD players sold through Wal-Mart and other discount retailers in recent weeks. Nielsen VideoScan data for the week shows 72.6% of high-definition discs purchased by consumers were Blu-ray and just 27.4% were HD DVD. HD DVD players have been selling for as little as $98, one-fourth the lowest street price for a Blu-ray player.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

So, we know the Nielson scan numbers for the week of the Disney releases (11/6) was 66/44 BD/HD, and last week (11/20) was 73/27 BD/HD. However, we still have no numbers the week Shrek came out (11/13), but those should be available tomorrow.

In any case, the 3-to-1 ratio for Thanksgiving week is not a good sign for HD-DVD. Granted, Blu-ray had many more significant releases that week, but one would think that Universal and Paramount/DreamWorks would be trying to counter that a bit better.

Re: *** Official HTF HD Formats Comparison Thread

HD-DVD players may be cheaper, but as an owner of both formats I've noticed a lot more deals on BD software than on HD-DVD discs. I was pretty excited by Amazon's buy-2-get-1-free deal on HD-DVD, but there have already been a number of buy-1-get-1-free deals on BD.
