Well, I've always thought from the start that all studios should have been neutral so that the consumer could actually decide who wins this thing. Obviously, that was never going to happen due to Sony's involvement, so it's only ever been a pipe dream.

I think there would have been much rejoicing if this had been the other way around, with Universal announcing format neutrality, as the war would have been pretty much over at that point. I'm sure HD-DVD enthusiasts would have been disappointed, but it's not like their players and discs would go anywhere if the format died off.

I've got to say that this is really annoying - having just got the money together to get an HD player of some flavour (and with companies like Tartan and Optimum releasing on BD here in the UK it was likely to be Blu Ray) I know find that rather than the war almost being over, it now looks likely to continue for at least another year or so. I just want one format to win - I don't really care which (although from a technical perspective I'd rather HD-DVD due to the lack of region coding). Time to put my cash back in the bank and start building up my SD collection....

Hell i will buy it on DVD, and play it on my Blu-ray player. Gonna save me about 10 bucks anyway.
I was looking at my Amazon wish list. Out of 20 titles i have on my wish list, i only had 1 Paramount Blu-ray, Face/Off. And only about 5 Blu-ray titles. The other 10 to 15 titles were DVD. I wouldnt expect to see The Hand, or Witchfinder General on either HD format in my lifetime.

My younger brother sold his 360 add-on a couple of months back assuming his PS3 would be all he needed in the future. I told him he should keep both just to be safe. His favorite movie this summer? Transformers.

Where did this notion that either toshiba or microsoft paid paramount to go exclusive come from? I've seen nothing that would indicate this is anything but an internet rumor.

Isn't it just possible that Paramount is losing money on its blu-ray releases? Also with the price of HD DVD players coming down (I wouldn't be surprised to see the on sale for as little as $150 at Christmas time) they may just feel that this is advantageous for them.

By the way I just saw the title list for the new Fox releases! There are some really good titles there!

I have heard many who work in the industry state that the biggest mistake was allowing an electronics manufacturer (Sony) to acquire a movie studio (Columbia). The seeds were pretty much sewn once this happened.

I agree, the scenario would just be that all studios would embrace neutrality but Sony. If you want Lawrence, Kwai, Taxi Driver, Dr. Strangelove and other great films, you'd just have to buy THEIR player/format if you want titles from the studio which THEY own.

You know something, all of this reminds me of watching the movie Pearl Harbor after Pearl Harbor was bombed. One of the Japanese generals was quoted as saying something to the effect "I fear we may have awaken the giant" or something like that. Now with the Fox schedule release announcement fast-tracked, it kind of seems that way at least.

In the end, this whole hidef scenario is a tennis match with us as the pawns. One camp goes ahead and certain things are put into effect by the powers that be to make sure that things even up and the "war" drags on until none are left.

Hmmm, I wonder who it is that does not want either format around?

So let me get this straight--by "exclusive to hd-dvd" they mean that "Shrek the Third" will be available ONLY in hd, and not in standard?

And if so, is their logic that since people can only buy Shrek in HD that they'll rush out to buy a hd player? 'Cause gee, that would be nice, but what's REALLY gonna happen is that not only are consumers gonna be p.o.'ed, but they'll be even more likely to download these "exclusive" movies than ever before. You will see conservative parents downloading Shrek the Third to please their crying children, rather than rushing out to Walmart with a huge fat check for that HD player. That's just life.

Douglas, I agree with David even though I bought both formats. As long as there are two formats out there, it's just going to cause confusion in the market place. I know anecdotal evidence isn't king, but the guy at my local Blockbuster was talking about the flood of complaints the first week they got Blu-ray from people who thought they could play it on their standard DVD players. I told him he'd better be glad they didn't have HD-DVD in their store, too, because it would have been even worse.

The fact is, ONE format would be fighting an uphill battle; with two there, it's even worse. Don't get me wrong, I love HD-DVD and think it's done some great things for HD media. I'm still buying select Universal and Weinstein releases. But I really think if HD media is going to survive, this war needs to end.

Neither format has a better chance at winning, if by "winning" is meant success in the general marketplace. Let's be honest here. David and many others want BR to win because they prefer it technically, not because they think it will inherently be more appealing to consumers.

I'll admit I preferred BD techincally before both formats launched, but my loyalty shifted once HD-DVD made an impressive debut at a great price. However, I feel BD has its act together now, and is actually living up to its technical potential. However, is this the reason I want it to "win?" Not entirely. I want it to win because it realistically has a chance of being adopted. The sales numbers bear this out--it's outselling HD-DVD consistently, so I don't think it's illogical to assume that it has the better chance of bringing HD media to the mainstream.

I think this really depends on how many players are sold this Christmas. Frankly I don't think most consumers are confused at all because they haven't heard of either format. However if you have a player on sale this Christmas for around $150, you may get quite a few of those house holds that invested in an HDTV over the last 2 years, to buy an HD player. And it's looking more and more like HD DVD will get to that price before blu-ray.

This is all about the price of the players, I've been saying that for over a year now.

Yes, another reason I prefer BD is that it is technically superior (bit rate blah blah). However, it is because of greater industry support that it stands a better chance of being more solidly adopted: not widespred like DVD, but better than the straggling DVD-A/SACD debacle.

This sounds like circular reasoning to me. "BR has the best chance to win because it's winning". However, that is not the same as saying "if BR doesn't win, people will never accept (and buy in large numbers) HDDVD".

I think if....and this is a big if....if you see HD DVD players priced under $200 this Christmas, there will be a major shift in the format war.

The funny thing is that people have counted HD DVD out so many times before, before they were even released, and the format has surprised people so often, that I would say that anything is possible at this point.

A dominate HD DVD format wouldn't surprise me if they get to the magic player price numbers soon enough.
