Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

Glad to hear this is coming. Just finished season 2 yesterday and enjoyed it a lot (although some of the discs had freezing problems). I doubt I will buy all the seasons of this show, but I'm in for the next few at least.

Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

For me, this is the season when the classic Happy Days era begins, with Fonzie moving in to the Cunningham garage apartment (at the behest of then-ABC president Fred Silverman). Plus you get Pinky Tuscadero, Fonzie in a dance marathon with 'Shortcake', and see what happens whe the Fonz arranges a double date for himself and Richie with two certain gals from the Shotz brewery..... This was the year that the show led to ABC's first-ever season as the top-rated network. For me and many others who were there, this set is a must-buy!

Sam,

I held off on getting S2 due to the posts about the xfrs being bad. How would you rate them?

This is my opinion that its been blown way out of proportion. The music replacements dont harm the show in anyway, you can hardly notice that certain songs are missing. As for the "bad picture quality" people are harping on about, there are scenes where its not that good, but it might last for a minute at the most, every episode is dominated by great picture quality, with probably 4-5 scenes out of the whole of season 2 with 'not so good' picture quality.

The packaging is a thin dvd case as opposed to the box that season 1 came in and the dics are pretty bland, grey dics with the title of the show and a bunch of other writting that you'd find on most dvds. That is only minor detail to the most important thing which is the show.

Its kind've weird that season two took 2 and a half years after season one to get released and now season three took only 8 months to get released after season 2, maybe Paramount saved so much money on music replacements that they recouped most of it through sales.

Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

Well, season 3 is when the show became super popular (and went down the tubes quality wise) This should sell much better than the first 2 seasons as it stopped being Happy Days and became the Fonzie is Superman Show.

I wonder if the lesser quaity scenes are ones that had music replacement. You know, they had to go back to older elements from the vaults?

I agree that the matter of transfers has been exaggerated. Yes, there are some scenes that look poor, but overall, I'd have to say the show looks better than it ever did on TV. Just watching it (S2) this week, I thought that the picture looked very clear, with the image sharp and the colors vibrant. Again, overall.

I also didn't notice the music subs much at all. However, I did have about 3 episodes with freezing issues, so the set doesn't get a complete pass from me.

Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

And this is one of my ALL-TIME favorite DVD collections, along with LAVERNE & SHIRLY. I'm VERY excited to see season 3 come out so soon after season 2.

My only complaint with Season 2 was the packaging it came in. It wasn't as neatly packaged as Season One was, and I HATE for my collections to not match.

Other than that, I thought the quality was acceptable and nothing to fuss over, considering the option of NOT HAVING THEM AT ALL.

Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

I guess I'll bite for Season 3, but that will probably be the end for me. I was never a fan of the "Fonzie Show" that HAPPY DAYS turned into, but one season of this would be decent, and nostalgic.

Your right, Fonzie was pretty much a super hero in the later seasons. If I remember correctly though Happy Days reverted to it's original drama/comedy formula in the early 80's, and Fonzie no longer had magic powers. He was just a normal guy focused on the relationship with his girlfriend.

I'm in it for the long haul. As long as seasons(Happy Days, Laverne, & Shirley, Mork & Mindy) are released on dvd, I will continue to buy them.

No thanks for me!

Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

I am looking forward to season 3 as there are some of my favorite episodes in this season. This is it for me though as season 4 got too goofy for my tastes.

The only later episode I really love is the one where Richie crashes his motorcycle and Fonzie visits him and breaks down.

Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

Is this the season where the Fonz jumped the sharks??

Best Fonzie scene ever, IMO, was when Richie was (inexplicably) dressed as a woman, and Fonzie unwittingly starting dancing with him. What was classic was the look on Fonzie's face the second he realized that it was really Richie I can't remember what season that was; probably very early on.

For the later years, the show suffered from its own popularity, I think. Whenever one of the regulars would walk onto the stage, the studio audience would let up a war whoop... I think it hurt the comedy of the show. It just seemed like a popularity contest. And oh geez--when Scott Baio would come on the girls would scream so damn loud. It took the home audience right out of the show. I think in the long run this kind of sitcom producing hurt the show, because there's a certain, subtle resentment the home audience feels, now disconnected from that live experience by 30 years. It's a very off-putting thing to watch. But the live audience participation was one of those quaint 1970s customs that's hard to explain nowadays. I guess to truly enjoy Happy Days you had to be there in the 1970s, and better yet, in the studio audience.

Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

I'm still debating picking up S2. I love the show, but like many I am disappointed with the music subs, lack of extras, poor transfers, etc. On the other hand, I think we are stuck with what we've got and not buying it does nothing to change the studio's plans. It is interesting to read all the Amazon reviews complaining about the music subs (and I don't blame them), but it strikes me as impotent rage.

True; there's a lot of impotent ragers on this forum as well.

Yeah as soon as the Fonz jumped the shark.. but I would argue as soon as it went in fromnto of a live audience it jumped

I'd say the fact that a leading fan site outright condemned the set speaks volumes.

Unfortunately, most people don't know where to call and complain to studios. Disney has a consumer hotline but do any of the other studios? And where is it posted? The Cinema Laser is still reasonably good but it still has defunct companies and outdated names listed.

Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

I have bought both seasons thus far, and would be in for the third (not sure about anything after that) but I did notice the music replacements in season 2. They were glaring for me, and it really took the joy out of the set.

Gary "sorry, but when it comes to period pieces like HAPPY DAYS you just can't replace music without losing something" O.

Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

My goodness- you mean they took out all the stuff by Johnnie Ray, Connie Francis and other artists originally heard on the TV soundtracks? What on earth did they replace those songs with- Muzak-like 'faux 50s' music?

Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

I have to admit I was disppointed by the music substitutions and if there is a glaring omission to this set, that is it. But I found - much to my surprise - that I really enjoyed Season 2 on DVD. It's not as bad as you think.

But what is the new music?

It was just generic instrumental stuff. Nothing horrible, but nothing good either. None of it was replacing a lesser known 50's tune for a better known one. It was all muse-ack (sp?) type stuff. Pretty bland, and somewhat jarring at times if you were anticipating something else.

Gary "I'm surprised it didn't bother more people - I thought it was pretty obvious and annoying" O.

The new music is the stuff that Happy Days used in the series as instrumentals. Basically they grabbed the stuff that they controlled so they wouldn't have to worry.

Re: Happy Days season out November 27th

My problem with the music substitution on Happy Days Season Two, mostly, is how OBVIOUS the theme song replacement was. I don't really understand why they didn't at least use the longer variation of the Happy Days theme that was played on the radio in the 70's.

The other thing I wouldn't have minded (and it might have made for a nice bonus) is if they had re-edited the credits to be the proper length, and maybe redone them to a format matching season 3-on. Then, for the sake of completion, license "Rock Around The Clock" once and show the full opening as a bonus.

As things stood, it seemed like they just kept looping and repeating the familiar Happy Days theme, and it just didn't work.
