David,what are the chances of BCI releasing The Gong Show and Battle Of The Network Stars?A lot of people who appeared as contestants on The Gong Show went on to have at least some degree of popularity - Paul Reubens,Danny Elfman,Michael Winslow and there were also a lot of big names who were judges like Steve Martin and David Letterman(I may be mistaken,but didn't Robin Williams make an appearance,or two,as a judge,during his time on Mork & Mindy).Battle Of The Network Stars had a virtual who's who of celebrities on every episode.Basically,anybody who was on a show,at the time,appeared on Battle Of The Network Stars.Because of the "celebrity factor"associated with these shows,like the Match Game & All-Star Family Feud,I think these would sell.

When Trio reran Battle of the Network Stars, it was pure gold on the screen.

Gong Show is a music license nightmare. I think there may be some rights issues with Network Stars. It's something we've taken a small look into.

David, what I really wish is you could liberate my game show from Fox's clutches. But then that would mean someone would have to pay me residuals, and I know they'd sooner eat a pony.

Not quite as entertaining as "MATCH GAME," but "TATTLETALES" with Bert Convy probably has the celebrity weight and the naughty/camp factor that could make it a good impulse seller.
And if you took on the classic B&W "WHAT'S MY LINE," my friend and former TV co-star Andy Zax would be able to provide terrific historical commentary; he's well versed in the great old game shows.

hey, David, how about looking into the "naughty" game show Everything Goes which aired on the Playboy Channel and hosted by comedian Kip Adotta? It was plenty funny, had a lot of ex-Gong Show regulars as panelists, and had a lot of nudity for a titillation factor, or is BCI mainly just for "family-friendly" fare?

One game show that would be nice (if the legal co-ownership could be worked out) is Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour. Goodson produced it, but Orion had co-ownership it (now Sony, I guess).

As for non-game shows that aren't under tight control by the rights holders, I still want to cast my vote for Kenneth Johnson's Cliff Hangers!, owned by Universal.

No idea as to rights, but how about Madame's Place? Wayland and Madame were quite popular back in the day!

Could it be any worse than Saturday Night Live,which everybody was saying won't be released in season sets because it's a "music license nightmare"?Can you elaborate on the rights issues for Network Stars?

Much worse. Because SNL is owned by Universal, and Universal Music Group is the largest record label in the industry so they had a significant advantage over other studios. I'd imagine that it was much easier (and cheaper) for them to license any music that is under their own label. Plus they can can essentially "threaten" musical acts/labels by telling them they need to play ball if they ever want to appear on SNL again.

You also have to assume that season sets of SNL will sell so many more sets than The Gong Show, and that makes the price per unit MUCH, MUCH higher on The Gong Show.

Gong Show is going to fall into the WKRP, Wonder Years, Malcom in the Middle territory. Except with The Gong Show you really can't replace music - even if you wanted to.


Nope. I really don't know what they are - that's just what I've heard. My guess would be it involves having consent from all the people that appeared.

How about classic episodes of "The Dating Game" which feature celebrities. I know Farrah Fawcett and Tom Selleck appeared on the show before they were stars, but I'm more interested in minor celebrities like Kathy Garver and Maureen McCormick.

On the front page of sitcoms online.com , ive just read a nice little dvd review for the all star family feud dvd set. I cant wait to get my set in the mail soon !

Can't wait for FAMILY FEUD. I'll be naming it DVD of the week tomorrow on my blog.

And also have to say BATTLE OF THE NETWORK STARS would be a great title. I didn't get Trio at the time they reaired them, but the airing got a lot of press. There is a lot of interest in the series.

As for THE GONG SHOW, from what I've heard, even GSN has music license issues with it. It doesn't get shown all that much because of it. And TV airings are easier than DVD.

David,I don't mean to harp on Battle Of The Network Stars but I was wondering if you could clear something up for me.It's been posted in various threads (a couple of the earlier Love Boat threads,for example) that you have to get guest stars' approval to release shows on DVD.I thought to myself "Gee.If that was the case,there'd be a lot less DVD on the market.That can't be true".Also,I've heard cases,and I'm sure you've heard them as well,where the stars of shows are asked about their show on DVD where the star replies "they didn't even know it was released on DVD.I read about just exactly this,around a year or so ago.One of the actresses on Charlie's Angels was asked about the DVDs and replied something like "She didn't know Charlie's Angels was on DVD and then again the studios don't share their plans with the cats of the shows".And she was one of the stars,not a guest star.So if you have to get guest stars' consent,why don't you have to get the main stars' consent?Just wondering.

A lot of it depends on how the original contracts were laid out. It depends on when the show was made and sometimes it boils down to the legal department of whoever owns the show.

Yes, they were able to finish. They got word they were being cut to 13 episodes early enough that they were able to compress and streamline the remaining episodes to still get to their same conclusion.

I wonder if theyll let us know the exact episodes, before the release like they did with the feud set.So far, all they said are a few Cullen shows, and Barkers 5 last shows and debut.

It also claims that the first Bob Barker episode will be on there. That had a fur as a prize if I recall correctly. So this begs the question of Bob Barker's level of involvement with the set.

No indie can afford a Blu Ray release right now. And they probably won't be able to until a major growth in the HD market.
