Much worse. Because SNL is owned by Universal, and Universal Music Group is the largest record label in the industry so they had a significant advantage over other studios. I'd imagine that it was much easier (and cheaper) for them to license any music that is under their own label. Plus they can can essentially "threaten" musical acts/labels by telling them they need to play ball if they ever want to appear on SNL again.
You also have to assume that season sets of SNL will sell so many more sets than The Gong Show, and that makes the price per unit MUCH, MUCH higher on The Gong Show.
Gong Show is going to fall into the WKRP, Wonder Years, Malcom in the Middle territory. Except with The Gong Show you really can't replace music - even if you wanted to.

Nope. I really don't know what they are - that's just what I've heard. My guess would be it involves having consent from all the people that appeared.
