Re: Bunion Surgery, Anyone?

I went in to see the doc because my right foot was hurting me, when I thought the pain should have been totally gone. By hurting, I mean a dull, irritating ache. He thought it was being caused by the metal bar that was attached to the bone they cut in two.

He said it could be removed because the bone was completely healed. I'm putting that off to see if the pain will go away. I've jogged a couple of times now and I think the more work I give the foot, the less it hurts. I'm noticing the pain a lot less.

Hi, I am a 20 year old college student with Bunions, I have had them since I was 7 years old. I am considering getting surgery even though they dont really hurt, they just hurt if I have been on my feet all day or was wearing the wrong type of shoes. I am mainly thinking of getting them done because I am really embarrssed by them and I use to get bullied alot because of them. My mom is always telling me that I need to get them done but I dont know. I am really busy with school and what not. Should I really get them done just because I am embarrsed?

It is hard for me to identify with your situation since I'm 63.   Personally I don't think getting them because your embarrassed is a good enough reason.  This is significant surgery on feet you will be using for the rest of your life.  Get the procedure because your doctor recommends it for your health.

I like to say the surgery is a piece of cake but the recovery is a bitch.  When you have one foot done, you will be significantly disabled for about 4 months and even after that you will be babying that foot for a while.  Then you do the other foot.  You will be disabled to some degree for a year.

If your surgeon says to do both feet at once, run, don't walk, away from that doctor.  The only reason you can get around at all after doing one foot is because you've got another good one to take most of the weight.  If both are done at once you will not walk for several months.

Get the opinion of your GP, then if he concurs get the opinion of the surgeon, and then get the opinion of a second surgeon.  Take this decision very seriously.

After my two surgeries, I got a very good correction on my left foot (first one done), but not so much on the second one.  That's something else to keep in mind, they don't guarantee the results.

Oreobliz, I would not get them done because you are embarrassed but I would check and see what a doctor thinks about them. My wife has one and has been putting off getting it worked on for years. She has more pain with it every year and it will only get worse the older she gets.

hi, i am 18 years old and have had bunions as long as a i can remember also. They became more painful as i got older and they restricted me as a runner. i have dreamed of bunion surgery, until yesterday. i finally had my wish come true. i didn't care how much it would cost or how much it would hurt i wanted it gone! unfortunately i could only get one done at a time, but its easier this way because it is extremely painful, and difficult to get to bathroom, etc. I highly recommend bunion surgery if it is something you have wanted for a while. i just finished my first year of college and devoted my summer break to a renewed foot! i cant wait to wear sandals. for the time. im stuck in bed, in lots of pain. the first day was pretty bad, but the second day is better. i will check back up with you in a few weeks and let you know how it went. good luck if your decide to have the surgery! i think it will be worth it

Tori, from personal experience I can tell you getting one foot done at a time is the only way to go. You would be a total invalid for an extended time if you did both at once. My doctor gave me pain medication would I don't recall needing for more than a week. That's not to say the pain was gone, it still hurt, but not so that i needed pain meds. You know, I probably tapered them off in the second week.

Another thing that helped with the pain for the first 24 hours was an injection called a nerve block. I was given it before the surgery and it lasted for close to 24 hours. Basically, it was like I had no leg below the knee, none that I cold feel. That meant the worst day for pain, there was none.

They've probably issued you crutches and a shoe that's basically a sandal with a board for the sole. Don't forget, you can get a temporary disabled sticker so you can park in those reserved spots.
