Oh Disney, Where Art Thou?

Disney seems to be flying under that radar with all the focus on the disappearance of Fox and everyone marking the calendar for their return.

Yeah I know Cars and Pirates 3 are on schedule, but do they no longer have any intention of releasing anything over a year old? Seriously.

What happened to the rest of the June lineup (Crimson Tide, The Rock, etc) that got pulled? Wasn't the word that they were supposed to be rescheduled and released before the end of summer?
Didn't they hold a party crowing about Chronicles of Narnia coming to Blu-ray before the end of Summer? Any more word on that?
What about Sin City? It's making me mental watching the Blu-Ray teaser yet still no word of a release.
Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill seem to be scheduled for release overseas, what about a US release?
How about Open Range, Tombstone, Nightmare Before Christmas? no, too old?

Am I being greedy and expecting too much?

The way I figure it is that I have an extra $220 to burn that I'll be saving by not picking up that insanely over-priced Star Trek set so this could be used to cover 10 to 11 Disney catalog titles.

Really, what's the current story with Disney and their catalog?

Re: Oh Disney, Where Art Thou?

Patience. BTW, Disney just announced a Pixar Short Films collection as well.

There's already been so much announced on BD that I'm already scaling back my want list. I'm honestly wondering if I will be able to afford all of what does get announced. Don't get me wrong, I want a lot of the titles that you've mentioned, but I wouldn't get too concerned unless we haven't heard anything by the end of Aug.

HD DVD continues to press its one advantage: price, but I have a feeling that not only will BD come down Q4, not to the level of HD DVD obviously, but they will also try to "kill them with content". Wishful thinking perhaps, but that's what I would do assuming production isn't an issue.

Re: Oh Disney, Where Art Thou?

There are definitely some titles I'd love to see that's under the Disney umbrella (Miramax):

City of God, The Best of Youth (all 6.5 hours worth), Ridicule, Delicatessen, Amelie, Children of Heaven, Cinema Paradiso, Trois Coleurs Trilogy, Purple Noon, The Barbarian Invasions, I'm Not Scared, Trainspotting, The Son's Room, etc. That's a pretty solid list of titles which would get cinephiles on board.

Re: Oh Disney, Where Art Thou?

Yeah, Disney said they might be releasing their animated 1967 movie "The Jungle Book" before the end of the year. Other than that it's mostly newer stuff.

I get where you’re coming from Paul. Like you, depending what more gets announced I may also scale back a bit on my buying, trimming off the "like to own" titles and concentrating on the "must owns" but that's a good thing IMO. I'd rather have too much content come out at once (even too much to afford and/or time to watch) than not enough titles. The titles we choose to pass up (if we have to) in Q4 can be picked up in Q1/Q2 next year (maybe on sale if we're lucky ) when we go back to being starved for upcoming content again.

I say bring it on (as many releases as possible) and let the good times roll until the end of Dec when I expect the floodgates to close and the releases dry up again until May or so.

Thanks Marek, I heard some of those overseas titles would be region free and it is a solid option for me if it turns out these don't get a US release this year.

Only problem for me is finding a reasonable low cost way of importing them. Unfortunately Exploited doesn't carry Blu-ray imports (or didn't last time I checked).

Thanks Tim, I try to lighten up the mood around here from time to time.

Re: Oh Disney, Where Art Thou?

In the beginning...I was there.

After March 97, in the months...many months...following the launch of the DVD format; Disney was largely absent and released few titles, most of which were crap.

Little has changed...be patient my son! The Mouse has a God complex and will do what it will in the fullness of time. Amen.

Re: Oh Disney, Where Art Thou?

Rumor in the Disney circles is that Sleeping Beauty will be released before the end of the year on Blu-ray. I'm not holding my breath.

Jim, that fiscal logic makes me think you must have spent time as one of the army of MPAA accountants constantly refining the dollar figure for how much the studios have "lost" due to piracy in Asia.
