Close Encounters of the Third Kind - November 13th

So much for the theory that Speilberg was somehow waiting for greater market penetration for his films.

Universal are you listening?

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - November 13th

Here's a link in which the article talks about Blade Runner too.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

Nov. 13

Details: Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition (DVD, $40; Blu-ray Disc, $50). Includes three versions of the film: the 1977 original theatrical cut, the re-edited 1980 theatrical special edition, and Steven Spielberg's director's cut, released in 1998.

Why it's important: It's the first time a Spielberg movie has been issued on high-definition disc, and it's the first home video release of all three versions

What's new: An interview with Spielberg created especially for this release and a retrospective documentary.

Plus: Only on the 50 GB Blu-ray edition are new "storyboard-to-scene" comparisons and the original 1977 "Watch the Skies" featurette. Blu-ray, says David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, "will add yet another new and thrilling dimension to this timeless film."

I don't think Spielberg controls this title which might be a reason why Sony is able to release it on BRD. Remember, this is being released the same day on SD DVD too.

Re: Close Encounters of the Third Kind - November 13th

YESSSS!!!
Great news. I kind of had a feeling that we might be getting this Spielberg film earlier than any of the others. Doesn't seem like he has much involvment with Sony, so they don't have to walk on eggshells as far as the two properties they hold of his are concerned.
Even better news- all three cuts of the film. First time since the Criterion LD we'll be seeing that- 'cept no four disc changes this time.

I was thinking we might have been in line to get Jaws this year after all- until I read of Spielbergs dissatisfaction with Paramount over how they have been handling the Dreamworks films. Prior to that I would have thought- hey, he bolted so the studio probably feels no compunction about using properties they own outright as they see fit- but now I'm thinking, SS might be regreting splitting from Universal, They suspect as much, and if they play their cards right, they maybe can woo Dreamworks back when the contract is up for renewal next year. Not sure if Universal wants them back, but I'm guessing after Dreamgirls and Transformers, it wouldn't look like a bad idea.
So even though they own Jaws (and some others) outright, and may have been planning on kicking them out sooner than expected- that could all be on hold now.

just musing though.

still- sweet news about CE3K. $50 msrp = $35 from Amazon, and maybe $28 if DD has another sale at that time. I can hang with those prices on this one.

Unbelievable, I didn´t not see this coming!

Re: Close Encounters of the Third Kind - November 13th

Holy crap all 3 versions! NOW were talkin! Great news!

Now why is it again that Universal can't release Jaws now? I think it has more to do with Universal being unwilling rather than a Spielberg dictate.

I believe that Paramount bought Dreamsworks outright. Universal might get Spielberg and Amblin back, but not Dreamworks.

Re: Close Encounters of the Third Kind - November 13th

Doug, I'll try to track down the article, but it sounded like Spielberg had an escape clause written in for Dreamworks as well as himself.

Here it is
http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/...ex _top+story

Quote:
Could Paramount Pictures (VIA) lose Steven Spielberg and the DreamWorks (DWA) studio it bought just 20 months ago for $1.53 billion? It's entirely possible. People close to Spielberg say he is vexed that Paramount has treated his team shabbily and grabbed credit for DreamWorks productions. If Spielberg were to leave, says a person familiar with the situation, he could take several of his hitmakers and the DreamWorks name with him.

...What's more, Spielberg could set up an entirely new company called, yes, DreamWorks. That's because DreamWorks Animation, which was spun out of the main DreamWorks studio, controls the name. (Paramount distributes Shrek and other animated films produced by DreamWorks Animation but doesn't own them.)

Re: Close Encounters of the Third Kind - November 13th

Holy crap! I'm having trouble keeping up with all these BD releases, and Fox/MGM haven't even announced anything yet.

Anyway, a must buy for me, especially since it includes all three versions!

Re: Close Encounters of the Third Kind - November 13th

With announcements like these, who needs Fox?

Hanukkah is getting happier by the minute.

Re: Close Encounters of the Third Kind - November 13th

A few points here:

As far as the movie goes, I used to own a 35mm print of this. It was such a wonderful experience seeing this in a real theater with some friends back in the laserdisc days when you could watch a high quality version with no flipping . Sadly, it was a mono print. It's long gone, I no longer collect film (what's the point?) but this is one of my favorite films. Having all three versions on this is a great selling point. Maybe now I can get rid of that ancient Criterion CAV!

As far as BR goes, I was completely format neutral since last year. REAL neutral, not this "internet neutral" where they bash one side and claim neutrality. However, in the last few weeks I've seen a MASSIVE push towards Blu-Ray. A killer app like this almost seals the deal on HD-DVD's fate. Unless some killer app comes out on HD-DVD (like Back to the Future, but it's Amblin), I can't see HD-DVD catching up now. I hate to say it but as much as I'm trying, my feeling is that by the end of this year, HD-DVD is going to get crushed.

Watch the skies

Re: Close Encounters of the Third Kind - November 13th

Is this officially announced? I note the David Bishop quote in the article but I wonder if that's just because it's written by industry insider and HMR publisher and editorial director Thomas K. Arnold.

Thanks much for that BusinessWeek link, Paul Scott.

Holy Smokes!!

My first thoughts on reading the thread title were this was another "Jaws coming to HD DVD" website listing type thing. I'm really shocked that it's not!

Through a process known as “seamless branching,” the Blu-ray version contains all three films on a single disc.

Correct me if I'm wrong... I think this will be the first BD to offer branching?

Re: Close Encounters of the Third Kind - November 13th

Nope, the Alien Vs. Predator BD has both the rated and unrated versions on the same disc via seamless branching.

True, but he was involved in this. Here's some info from paidgeek, Sony insider:

Suffice it to say that making sure that Steven is happy with the results is an absolute priority.

Re: Close Encounters of the Third Kind - November 13th

We have not heard what Universal has planned for the Holiday Season. It is E.T.'s 25th Aniv this year. I doubt they would let this milestone pass without doing something special. How about a counter-attack of releasing E.T. on HD DVD same day Sony releases Close Encounters on Blu Ray?

Interesting, but it sounds like the films would stay at Paramount.

Hoo boy, I'm excited. One of my favorite Spielberg films to be sure. Between this, Blade Runner, Spider-Man, and Pirates, it's going to be a high def holiday at my house this December.
