From themanroom:

Stanley Kubrick fans, today is your day. Warner Home Video has announced '2001: A Space Odyssey (Special Edition),' 'A Clockwork Orange (Special Edition),' 'Eyes Wide Shut (Special Edition),' 'Full Metal Jacket (Deluxe Edition)' and 'The Shining (Special Edition)' will be available individually on HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc on October 23 for an SRP of $28.99.

Better yet, it appears both versions of all the films will include Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless audio, and the Blu-ray versions will be pressed on BD-50 discs. Thank you, Warner!
We're still waiting to receive full disc specs and high resolution cover art, and will update each disc's detail page as soon as we have them.

Down for the box set, which is conspicuously absent from that announcement.

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

Well, three out of five ain't bad, and maybe four. Count me in for the HD DVD of A Clockwork, 2001 and The Shining. I will pick up Full Metal if it is struck from a different Master than the current HD DVD is.

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

For me, this is THE HD-release so far. Let´s hope for the box set and some proper extras! Like with some other titles, I have waited to see these again (first I waited the new DVD box set and then these HD-releases), which makes this all even better.

The Shining and 2001 will be eagerly awaited!

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

2001 is one of my 5 all time favorite films. It will look great in Hi Def. I may get FULL METAL JACKET if it is a better transfer than the one currently.

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

Great news! I'll be getting all 5.

I just put a kidney up for sale on Ebay to cover the cost of all these releases.

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

Hopefully EWS will be uncut, or else I will be importing that one from Asia. Also, it would be nice if they included the original mono tracks on FMJ, ACO and The Shining.

I'm relieved to hear they all have TrueHD!!!!!

Looks like TrueHD on both formats has been confirmed.

Supplemental details for the four titles have also not yet been revealed, but tech specs on the next-gen versions will include 1080p video transfers and remixed Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio tracks on both the Blu-ray and HD DVD editions.

I take it you're not a fan of EWS?

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

EWS is confirmed to be the R-rated version. I will not be purchasing this one from the U.S. I'll have to do some research and figure out which exchange rate works out best (probably Korea or Australia?)

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

It was my understanding that the uncensored version of EWS received the same R rating as the "censored" one.

I've seen incorrect ratings on press releases (and even packaging and discs) before so I think this release will be the original version.

I believe, IF done correctly, 2001 could be the best looking release on high def yet. And the audio should be incredible too.

Warner did a fantastic job with another large format film Grand Prix, so there is no reason to think they won't with this one as well.

Agreed! I wish more discs would include their original sound format.

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

All this talk about the formats getting closer to the director's vision with HD picture quality and lossless sound - and they're not including the original sound. Kind of defeats the purpose.

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

I completely agree Marc. I don't mind if they add another surround track but at least make the original an option.

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

I'm very interested in each of these releases. Probably with 2001 and EWS at the top (presuming EWS is finally unmodified). Hopefully I can find a nice preorder on them. Surprised there is no box though.

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

FMJ is the only film of his I like, sans EWS as I have not seen it, yet. I'll be picking FMJ up for certain.

I can't wait for these, either. I'll get 'em all.

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

I was under the impression that Warner was going to issue the version of Eyes Wide Shut that did not contain the digital "censorship" that Mr. Kubrick inserted into the U.S. release.

At any rate, all the more compelling reason to make the format jump -- that is, until I feel certain as to which format will take hold. This is frustrating.

The biggest problem is that Mr Kubrick did NOT insert the digital "censorship" into the U.S. release. This was done AFTER his passing. If Kubrick had actually seen the digital "censorship" I think there is a very good chance he would not have approved of it.

Exactly...

Re: 5 Kubricks coming to Blu-ray/HD-DVD 10/23

I believe the term you are all looking for is, "Oh, God, Yes."

I managed to catch 2001 on HDNet Movies a few months back, and it got me extremely excited to have a copy like that at home.

Like others, I have already picked up the FMJ HD-DVD, so will likely pass on the boxed set in favor of individual titles.

I thought that given the choice between making cuts and digital censorship, he choose the digital figures. He did agree to putting the figures there.Am I remembering that incorrectly?

As excited as I am for these. I dotn understand the decision to omit Barry Lyndon. It would look beautiful in HD.

Warner has a great track record of listening to what comsumers want ... hopefully theyll realize BL has its fans.

But cant wait to get all of these.

Kubrick passed away within days of creating his final cut. It wasn't submitted to the MPAA for several weeks after his passing. Jan Harlan did say that Kubrick had talked about that as an option if they couldn't get the R. All of this is moot though. In a day where ever other teen comedy has an "Unrated" version, there's no reason a modern-day classic like EWS shouldn't be available uncut in the States. Not to worry though. We will have other options. There's no way in hell I will be buying the U.S. version of this unless it does turn out to be uncut.

I don't know about that great track record, but that's a whole different debate.
